Sri lanka vs West Indies Live T20 World Cup 2012

Sri Lanka and West Indies have hardly had highlight moments when playing each other. Their most talked-about match is actually one that didn't happen, when West Indies refused to tour during the 1996 World Cup. There is Viv Richards' 181 not out, there is Brian Lara's 169 and his superlative Test tour of Sri Lanka in 2001, there are Muttiah Muralitharan's exploits and Shivnarine Chanderpaul's finish with four and six, but you really have to strain the memory to come up with those.

A glorious rivalry is not about to start on Saturday, but they play a crucial Super Eights game, one that could possibly assure one of them a semi-final place. It is a crucial game for the sides for different reasons. Sri Lanka don't have a positive net run-rate after their Super Over win, and West Indies will not be playing the last game of their group, so neither side will want to get into a net run-rate situation. The team that loses, though, could find themselves in exactly that situation.

Watch out for

International cricket went about 36 years without finger-flickers after John Gleeson retired in the '70s, but on Saturday we will have two of that variety pitting their wits against each other: Ajantha Mendis and Sunil Narine. Both of them had an ordinary outings on the flat track in Pallekele. Mendis went for a career-worst 1 for 48, and Narine 0 for 33. They will both be itching to correct that record.

Lasith Malinga may not have taken a five-for or bowled wicket-maidens, but he made an impact at a time when most bowlers are looking for towels for their sweaty palms. His captain Mahela Jayawardene summed it up well after his Super Over: "Another day he might go for runs but you always back your ace bowler. It is good to have somebody who has control mentally over that situation. After that you try to execute your skills. It is important that you are tough in that situation and Mali is one of those guys."

Team news

Ajantha Mendis is yet to fully recover from his side strain. The other spinner they used in the previous game, Akila Dananjaya, is also in doubt after suffering a fracture on his left cheek bone. A decision on whether he will play is to be taken on Saturday. They might also need to look at whether they need an extra specialist batsman ahead of one of three allrounders, or even one of the specialist bowlers.

Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Mahela Jayawardene (capt.), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Jeevan Mendis, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 and 11 Akila Dananjaya, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath

The legspinner Samuel Badree slotted in nicely against England, and Andre Russell, who came into the XI in the match against Ireland, wasn't even called upon to bowl. Choosing between Russell and Fidel Edwards might be West Indies' only dilemma.

West Indies (probable) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Dwayne Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Darren Sammy (capt), 7 Andre Russell/Fidel Edwards, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Samuel Badree.

At last we have a shoot-out. One of the flaws of this World Twenty20 has been the group-stage scheduling, which has cushioned the eight seeded teams by keeping them apart early on. If, say, England and India had played first up in Group A, then the loser's match against Afghanistan would have carried an extra edge, the knowledge that another slip would cause a catastrophic fall. Well, we have a situation like that now, with West Indies in no doubt that failure to beat Ireland will end their participation in the tournament.

Darren Sammy's side had been touted as one of the favourites but they were let down by their bowling and fielding in the D/L defeat against Australia. They will reflect, however, that making 191 when faced by the bowling of Shane Watson, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins is about as good a start with the bat as they could have made and if Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels get going against Ireland, that should be enough.

As Shane Watson alluded after Australia had eased past Ireland in the first Group B game, the Associate side come with a bright green warning tag these days. West Indies are one of the teams that already knew to take them seriously: two years ago in Guyana, they dismissed Ireland for 68, a score that is still the second-lowest total in T20 internationals and the lowest at a World Twenty20. But when that humiliating loss for the underdogs was followed by a winner-takes-all encounter against England in their next match, Ireland's tenacity was only undermined by the rain. They'll need to beat a Full Member in T20I cricket for only the second time in order to reach the Super Eights.

Form guide

(completed matches, most recent first)

Ireland : LLLLW
West Indies: LWWLW

Watch out for

Ireland's top order were blown away in the first match, as they lost three wickets in the Powerplay before slumping to 33 for 4. Kevin O'Brien showed his biffing qualities by top-scoring with 35 from 29 balls at No. 6 but he needs a better platform than provided against Australia if another famous win is going to come their way.

With two highly talented spinners in Sunil Narine and George Dockrell likely to play, it will be interesting to see how they fare on a Premadasa surface beginning to show signs of turn. Narine is the blockbuster name but both he and Dockrell were treated dismissively by Australia's batsmen. If the rain holds off, West Indies' mystery spinner versus Ireland's tall, classical left-armer could be the match-up of the day.

Team news

The Ireland squad are the latest to be struck down by illness, with several players and coaching staff, including Ed Joyce and Phil Simmons, affected. If everyone is fit, Ireland are unlikely to make too many changes, though Niall O'Brien could be moved up to open in place of the struggling William Porterfield. Bringing in allrounder Andrew White would give them an extra spin option.

Ireland (probable) 1 William Porterfield (capt), 2 Paul Stirling, 3 Ed Joyce, 4 Niall O'Brien, 5 Kevin O'Brien, 6 Gary Wilson (wk), 7 Andrew White, 8 Alex Cusack, 9 Trent Johnston, 10 George Dockrell, 11 Boyd Rankin

Ravi Rampaul suffered at the hands of David Warner and West Indies could bring in another slow bowler in the shape of legspinner Samuel Badree. Andre Russell played in both warm-up matches and provides an alternative pace option.

West Indies (probable) 1 Dwayne Smith, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Johnson Charles, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Dinesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Samuel Badree, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Fidel Edwards

South Africa vs Sri Lanka ICC T20 World Cup 2012

After won their First match, Both sides have got their bullying out of the way, having beaten Zimbabwe by 82 runs and 10 wickets respectively, and Sri Lanka and South Africa are now ready to do business. That may sound odd considering that both having both already qualified for the Super Eights but neither have been challenged properly yet and will want to test themselves before a tough next round.

Sri Lanka will be happy with the form of one of their most important bowlers, Ajantha Mendis. His 6 for 8 are figures unlikely to be repeated but Mendis showed he is back in a big way. He deceived the Zimbabwe batsmen with an assortment of carom balls and googlies and while the South African line-up may not be so easily hoodwinked, some of them are known to have a weakness against spin.

South Africa's middle order remains untested after only Richard Levi and Hashim Amla batted against Zimbabwe and they are yet to face any pressure, a catalyst for some of their worst major tournament showing. Sri Lanka will look to target that area of the opposition's game because every other part of it seems solid.

South Africa's seamers were effective on the Hambantota pitch and even though their spinners were not called into action too much, they have enough options available to them to be able to afford one bowler having a bad day. The hosts have similar variation in their ranks, with enough allrounders to have all bases covered and with the advantage of their middle order having had a decent run.

By all accounts the match-ups between the teams pre-empts a much closer contest than the group has seen so far. Even though it will not be decisive in terms of who the team play in the next round it will be important in determining who has more might for the big duels ahead,[via:Cricinfo]

New Zealand, considered underdogs for the tournament, will open their World Twenty20 campaign against a team that is also considered this year's dark horses and actually hold a mental edge over them - Bangladesh crushed the visiting New Zealand side 4-0 in a one-day series, and though that was two years ago, the memory is fresh for the eight members of the current squad who rejoiced with the cricket-crazy nation at the time. But Bangladesh have to quickly realise New Zealand will be eager to take the lead in a group that also contains Pakistan.
Ross Taylor will lead a side that has traditionally done well in multi-team tournaments, where they gel as a unit to reduce the gap between them and more talented or experienced sides. But this hasn't been a very positive year for New Zealand. They did start the 2011-12 season with home and away wins over Zimbabwe on either side of a drawn Test series in Australia - which included that win in Hobart - but it has been downhill ever since, losing at home to South Africa and away to West Indies in all three formats. There was a spark of hope coming into this tournament, as they recovered from a Test-series loss in India to take the rain-hit Twenty20 series 1-0 with a win in Chennai. Subsequently, in a way, this is a great stage for New Zealand - they get a global tournament in which to impress and make up for a poor year.
The main issue for them is fitness: Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee and Rob Nicol went to Kandy a day later than the rest of the team, too sick to travel on the stipulated day. The trio suffered gastro problems in Colombo, but have since recovered and are likely to be fit for selection. Also, Kyle Mills, who was recovering from his collision with Brendon McCullum during the India T20, had a bout of laryngitis. He too is expected to be fit.
Still, whether they are tested would entirely depend on how much fight Bangladesh can provide. Bangladesh, as opposed to New Zealand, come into this competition confident and well-prepared: after their rousing Asia Cup performance, they have devoted the Bangladesh off-season to exclusively playing Twenty20s.The recent history between the two sides, the talent within them and their strong reasons for needing to reach the Super Eights could produce a tremendous encounter.

South Africa vs Zimbabwe Live

Hambantota will play host to an African derby as tournament favourites South Africa begin another campaign for major silverware, this time against neighbours Zimbabwe. AB de Villiers' men probably could not have asked for a gentler easing in and will view this match as the beginning of a journey that they hope will end on October 7 in Colombo, with a trophy.

Despite some in the South Africa team being on the road since June, they showed no signs of homesickness and most were delighted to be in the island nation. De Villiers posted photographs of the air-force helicopter the team travelled in and Dale Steyn and Lonwabo Tsotsobe put up pictures of the beach in Hambantota.

They have found ways of keeping themselves fresh, a small sign that mindset has changed under Gary Kirsten. South Africa have made promises that they are ready to perform under pressure and that, more than ability with bat and ball will be under scrutiny.

Knowing that mind games have been used successfully against South Africa in the past, Zimbabwe will look to make the most out of their victory in the unofficial tri-series in June where they beat a South African side in the final.

Expect words on the field from Zimbabwe, who will be more motivated by who their opposition is than the context in which this match is played. Their flights to Harare are probably booked and boarding passes waiting to be stamped but Zimbabwe will want to make a point before boarding.

Brendan Taylor was visibly and verbally disappointed with Zimbabwe's performance against Sri Lanka. "We are a better side than that," he said. His team will want to prove the captain right.

If one of Twenty20's main purposes is to globalise the game, Afghanistan are its success story. Their country has been in the news for unfortunate reasons, but its teams' qualification for back-to-back World Twenty20s and the Under-19 World Cup is a welcome story. By all accounts, the following back home matches the frenzy cricket brings to the rest of cricketing Asia.

For the second time in their two appearances in the T20 global event, Afghanistan have drawn neighbours India at the start of the tournament. They will dearly love to be the banana skin, and they know this format was founded on banana skins. They will want to put pressure on India's bowling, which can be brittle under fire.

For India this match is expected to provide some much-needed relief after their bowlers have faltered in two of their last three Twenty20s. They will do well, though, to not take their opponents lightly because this is an event where you need just three bad hours to book a return ticket.

ICC T20 World Cup 2012

3rd match Group A

September 19, 2012

Start time 1930 (1400 GMT)

Players to Watch:

Mohammad Shahzad From Afghanistan : is a wicketkeeper, is known as MS in the Afghanistan dressing room, and like the other MS he aims to unleash the helicopter shot come this World Twenty20. "I am Dhoni's biggest fan, and I love the way he bats," Shahzad said. "I try and copy the shots that he plays and have practiced the helicopter shot at the nets. I was missing everything, it's a very difficult shot to play. But I kept persisting till the time I mastered the shot. Inshallah, you will see me hitting the helicopter shot in the match against India. And hopefully Dhoni will like it too."

Yuvraj Singh was a calculated risk when picked for World Twenty20, the underlying idea being his fitness would be tested before the tournament began. However, rain and his late entry in the batting order has meant he has faced only 43 balls going into the first match. His fitness and strength hasn't really been tested, and India are entering a bit of an unknown with him. They will hope that they have got back the Yuvraj of the old.

Team news

During the warm-up games, India tried playing five specialist bowlers and used Irfan Pathan and R Ashwin at Nos 7 and 8, but don't expect MS Dhoni to take that adventurous route. He never does, no matter how weak the bowling might be. Dhoni said India will go in with four bowlers for the opening game.

India (possible): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 MS Dhoni (capt. &wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Irfan Pathan, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 L Balaji/Ashok Dinda.

Seamer and Afghanistan's strike bowler Hamid Hassan has been ruled out of their opening game due to injury. He missed their warm-up games as well.

Afghanistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2 Javed Ahmadi, 3 Karim Sadiq, 4 Nawroz Mangal (capt.), 5 Asghar Stanikzai, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Samiullah Shenwari, 8 Dawlat Zadran, 9 Shapoor Zadran, 10 Gulbodin Naib, 11 Izatullah Dawlatzai

Australia vs Ireland Live T20 Cricket 2012

Australia is going to play 2nd t20 match world T20 with Ireland today. In latest ICC T20 Ranking,Australia is behind ireland in the table.

Twice in their history, Australia have slipped up disastrously against a less than fancied opponent early in a major event. The first instance came in 1983, when a Zimbabwe team led by Duncan Fletcher - who else? - ground down Kim Hughes' XI in the first round of the World Cup. Twenty-four years later, another Zimbabwe side upset Australia at the outset of the 2007 World Twenty20 in South Africa, a result that confirmed Ricky Ponting's side was less serious than required to deal successfully in the game's shortest variant.

There is a pattern to this. Australia took a long time to collectively grasp the tactical and technical realities of the one-day game, despite taking part in the first ODI in 1970-71 then being at the epicentre of Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket, which used the format as its primary vehicle for public interest. Similarly, T20 has taken time to find its place in the thinking of the 21st century Australian cricketer, not least when donning the national colours. The selection panel appointed in the wake of Don Argus' review has plumped for a specialist captain in George Bailey and a team more weighted than ever in favour of T20 merchants. Flexibility is the watchword, and it will not be a surprise to see Australia's No. 3 differ depending on which of David Warner (Michael Hussey) or Shane Watson (Glenn Maxwell?) gets out first.

For all this progressive thinking Australia retain a whiff of T20 underachievement, an appearance in the 2010 World T20 final against England notwithstanding. Their mottled results were confirmed when they slipped briefly beneath Ireland on the world rankings earlier this month, to the disgust of Australians and the delight of their opponents. Now Ireland have the chance to prove themselves worthy of overcoming Australia in direct T20 combat rather than via the vagaries of the ICC's points system.

Ireland will, as ever, offer plenty of fight, flair and the odd patch of eye-catching skill. In Paul Stirling and Kevin O'Brien they have two natural hitters to match Australia's most proficient sluggers Warner and Watson. George Dockrell's mature-beyond-his-years spin bowling will also be a critical ingredient on what is likely to be a dry Premadasa Stadium surface, while Boyd Rankin, Trent Johnston and company will benefit from the sage advice of their newly-acquired bowling coach Craig McDermott. Australia should win, but they should also have beaten Zimbabwe twice before.[Via:Cricinfo]

Who are the biggest hitters in T20?

A look at the batsmen and bowlers with the best boundary and dot-ball stats in T20 internationals

Over the last couple of years, T20 cricket has been all about clubs and franchises, with league tournaments mushrooming all over the world following the IPL's success. However, over the next three weeks, the focus shifts back to T20 cricket between countries. Here's a look at some of the top performers in T20 internationals, based not on the usual parameters of runs scored and wickets taken, the lists for which you can find here and here, but on ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball database, from which it's possible to get, among other numbers, dot-ball stats and batting and bowling performances during specific stages of a 20-over innings.
Dot-ball factor
In a format in which balls available are at a premium, those who waste the fewest deliveries are obviously a huge asset. The table below offers a reminder to England (if they ever needed one) and their fans of why Kevin Pietersen was such a key player: no batsman has a lower dot-ball percentage, among those who have scored 500 runs in T20 internationals. Out of 831 balls he faced, he went runless off only 255. Off the other 576 balls, he scored 119 fours and 32 sixes, and also took 348 singles, 71 twos and six threes.
Close behind him is Australia's Michael Hussey, whose dot-ball percentage is also outstandingly low. Both Hussey and Pietersen have achieved a low dot-ball percentage while maintaining averages of more than 30 - in Pietersen's case almost 38 - and a run rate of almost 8.50 per over.
The other player whose numbers stand out is Yuvraj Singh, who returns to the Indian team after winning his battle with germ-cell cancer. Yuvraj too averages more than 30, while his strike rate is the highest among batsmen who have scored 500 runs in T20 internationals.

While those with the lowest dot-ball percentages are mostly middle-order batsmen, those who play the most dot balls are usually openers, since they bat when fielding restrictions are in place. (Thus they also get more opportunities to score runs in boundaries.)
The names on the list below are all of opening batsmen, with some of them not scoring off as many as 48% of the deliveries they face. The good ones are those who score plenty of runs off the deliveries that are not dots. Chris Gayle, for example, has a dot-ball percentage of 42.40, which is the sixth-highest among batsmen with 500-plus runs, but yet he scores 8.63 runs per over (strike rate 143.91). Mohammad Hafeez, on the other hand, only scores at 6.75 per over (strike rate 112.52) due to his relative lack of boundary hitting: 279 of his 575 deliveries are dots, and off the others he has struck 78 fours and 12 sixes, and taken 157 singles, 41 twos and eight threes.

Boundary percentages
The list of batsmen with the highest percentage of runs in boundaries also has a few names who featured in the previous table. As mentioned earlier, it's most likely that openers will dominate this list, as there's less protection in the outfield when they are batting. However, there are a couple of non-openers who make it: Yuvraj combines a low dot-batting strike rate with a high percentage of runs in boundaries, which explains his outstanding strike rate and the fact that he is the only batsman to score 500-plus runs in T20 internationals at a strike rate of more than 150. Then there's Albie Morkel, who has scored crucial runs for South Africa down the order when there's little time to settle in. (Both Yuvraj and Morkel are among the select few who have struck more sixes than fours in Twenty20 internationals.)

Martin Guptill81832.727.4971/ 3560.39
Examining the same set of stats between the 11th and 20th overs, the dot-ball percentages come down even further, to 23.81 for Michael Hussey, 25.26 for AB de Villiers, 26.02 for Dwayne Bravo and 26.43 for Suresh Raina. At the other end of the scale are Abdul Razzaq (36.84) and Kieron Pollard (34.39), both big hitters who believe fielders on the boundaries aren't a problem when the aim is to send the ball into the crowd.
MS Dhoni has a pretty high dot-ball percentage too in the middle overs, of 31.28% (which is the ninth-highest among batsmen who have scored 300-plus runs in the last ten overs). That, coupled with his relatively low boundary percentage of 43.65, means his run rate in the last ten overs is only 7.44. On the other hand, Yuvraj also has a relatively high dot percentage, of 30.68, but he scores 68% of his runs in boundaries, which lifts his run rate in these ten overs to 10.4 runs per over.
The bowlers
Dot-ball percentages
Just as minimising the dot-ball percentage is key for batsmen, maximising it is crucial for bowlers, to increase the pressure on batsmen and force them into errors. Among bowlers who have bowled at least 75 overs, South Africa's Morne Morkel has the highest dot-ball percentage, of 50.29. Not surprisingly, his economy rate and average are both excellent.
Trent Johnston in the second spot is a bit of a surprise, but his stats are obviously boosted by the fact that he has played a fair number of matches against the lesser teams. Most of the bowlers on the list below are new-ball bowlers, which you would expect, given that they bowl when the field restrictions are on, which gives them the best chance to bowl dots. Most of them also have an economy rate of less than seven, and averages of less than 22.

Boundary percentages
The list of bowlers with the lowest percentage of runs in boundaries is dominated by spinners - and all of them high-class spinners who have learnt the art of bowling in 20-over cricket. Daniel Vettori leads the way, and has conceded more sixes than fours, which is perhaps a commentary on the size of the outfields in New Zealand as well. The one number in Harbhajan Singh's row that stands out is his average: while most of the others average less than 21, Harbhajan concedes 30 runs per wicket.

The three bowlers who have conceded the highest percentages of runs in boundaries are all New Zealanders, with two of them conceding more than eight per over. Shane Bond's overall economy rate is much lower, which is due to his high dot-ball percentage - even though he concedes a few boundaries, he compensates by keeping it tight otherwise.

ICC T20 world Cup 2012 point table

T20-World-Cup-2012-point system
T20-World-Cup-2012-point system
The following points system will apply:
Win 2
Tie or no result 1
Loss 0
In the event of a tied match in the Group stage or Super Eight Series the teams shall compete in a one over per side eliminator to determine the winner. If weather conditions prevent the one over eliminator from being completed, the result will be a tie and the points allocated accordingly.
Group Stage
In the event of teams finishing on equal points in its Group, the right to play in the Super Eight Series will be decided in the following order of priority:

  • The team with the more wins in the Group stage will be placed in the higher position.
  • If there are teams with equal points and equal wins in the Group stage then in such case the team with the higher net run rate in the Group stage will be placed in the higher position.
  • If following the net run rate calculation above there are teams which are still equal, then the team with the higher number of wickets taken per balls bowled in the Group stage in which results were achieved will be placed in the higher position.
  • If still equal, the team which was the winner of the head to head match played between them will be placed in the higher position.
  • In the highly unlikely event that teams cannot be separated by the above this will be done by drawing lots.
  • If all three matches within a Group are a no result, the top two seeded teams will progress to the Super Eight series.
Super Eight Series
In the event of teams finishing on equal points at the end of the Super Eight Series, the right to play in the semi-final will be decided in the following order of priority:

  • The most wins in the Super Eight Series matches.
  • If there are teams with equal points and equal wins in the Super Eight Series matches then in such case the team with the higher net run rate in the Super Eight Series matches will be placed in the higher position.
  • If following the net run rate calculation above there are teams which are still equal, then the team with the higher number of wickets taken per balls bowled in the Super Eight Series matches in which results are achieved, will be placed in the higher position.
  • If still equal, the team which was the winner of the head to head match played between them will be placed in the higher position.
  • In the highly unlikely event that teams cannot be separated by the above this will be done by drawing lots.
  • If all of the matches in a Super Eight Series Group are a no result, for the purposes of determining the semi-finalists, the teams will be ordered by their performances in the Group stages as follows: most points, most wins, net run rate. Any teams that can not be separated in this way shall then be ordered by their original seedings for the tournament.
Semi Final
If a semi-final is tied, the teams shall compete in a one over per side eliminator to determine which team progresses to the Final. Details for one over per side eliminator.
If following a tie, weather conditions prevent the one over eliminator from being completed, or if the match is a no result, then the team which progresses to the Final shall be determined as follows:

  • The team with more wins in all previous matches (both the Group stage and Super Eight Series).
  • If still equal, the team with the higher net run rate in all previous matches (both the Group stage and Super Eight Series) in which results are achieved.
  • If still equal, the team with the higher number of wickets taken per balls bowled in all previous matches (both the Group and Super Eight Series) in which results are achieved.
  • If still equal, by drawing lots.
Final
In the event of a tied Final, the teams shall compete in a one over per side eliminator to determine which team is the winner. Details for one over per side eliminator. If weather conditions prevent the one over eliminator from being completed, the teams shall be declared joint winners.
In the event of a no result, provided weather conditions permit, the teams shall compete in a one over per side eliminator to determine which team is the winner. If weather conditions do not permit, the teams shall be declared joint winners.
Net Run Rate
A team‟s net run rate is calculated by deducting from the average runs per over scored by that team throughout the relevant portion of the competition, the average runs per over scored against that team throughout the relevant portion of the competition.
In the event of a team being all out in less than its full quota of overs, the calculation of the net run rate of both teams shall be based on the full quota of overs to which the batting team would have been entitled and not on the number of overs in which the team was dismissed.
Only those matches where results are achieved will count for the purpose of net run rate calculations. Where a match is abandoned, but a result is achieved under Duckworth/Lewis, for net run rate purposes Team 1 will be accredited with Team 2‟s Par Score on abandonment off the same number of overs faced by Team 2. Where a match is concluded but with Duckworth/Lewis having been applied at an earlier point in the match, Team 1 will be accredited with 1 run less than the final Target Score for Team 2 off the total number of overs allocated to Team 2 to reach the target.
In circumstances where a match (and the points for such match) is awarded to a team as a result of the other team‟s refusal to play, either by the match referee in accordance with Law 21.3 (a)(ii) as read with playing condition 21.3 or in accordance with the provisions of the relevant event agreements signed by the participating teams, the net run rate of the defaulting team shall be affected in that the full 20 overs of the defaulting team‟s innings in such forfeited match shall be taken into account in calculating the average runs per over of the defaulting team over the course of the relevant portion of the competition. For the avoidance of doubt the runs scored and overs bowled in such forfeited match will not be taken into account when calculating the net run rate of the team to whom the match was awarded.

The inaugural ICC World Twenty20 was staged in South Africa from September 11-24, 2007. The 12 participating teams were divided into four groups of three each. India was in Group D along with Pakistan and Scotland and under the inspirational captaincy of MS Dhoni, trounced Pakistan in a thrilling and unforgettable final at The Wanderers.
As per the tournament rules, the top two teams from each group went through to the second stage of the tournament, the Super Eights. India stormed into the next round after beating Pakistan in a dramatic bowl-out 3-0 and Scotland. In the Super Eights, they beat England and South Africa and in the semi-finals held their nerves to defeat Australia by 15 runs and set up a mouth-watering final against Pakistan.
In Johannesburg, Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat. India’s was a stop-start innings, with Gautam Gambhir leading the way with a 54-ball 75 and Rohit Sharma injecting crucial runs with an unbeaten 30 off 16. As he had been during the tournament, Umar Gul was on the ball and collected the prized wickets of Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni as India finished on 157 for 5.
In the second innings, Pakistan faltered until Misbah-ul-Haq struck three sixes off Harbhajan Singh in the 17th over. Pakistan needed 13 from the final over, and after much deliberation Dhoni decided to give the ball to Joginder Sharma who had bowled an ice-cool two-wicket final over against Australia in the previous game.
A wrong call by the captain would have cost India the trophy. Joginder started with a wide delivery, then a dot. He bowled a full toss next, and Misbah hit him for a six. Six runs off
4 balls was a simple situation for Pakistan, but Joginder’s magic worked for Dhoni. On the very next ball, Misbah went for a scoop which landed safely in Sreesanth's hands at short fine leg to crown India Twenty20 champions. Irfan Pathan, who scalped three wickets, was adjudged Man of the Match. Joginder never played another match for India.

Just months after the attack on the visiting Sri Lankan team in Lahore that resulted in Pakistan losing the right to host international cricket, a Younis Khan-led outfit beat Sri Lanka to win the title at Lord’s. It was Pakistan’s first major trophy in 17 years.
Pakistan peaked at the right moment, overcoming a poor start, which included a defeat to England in its opening game and a thrashing to Sri Lanka in the Super Eights. Riding on a superb 54 off 52 balls from Shahid Afridi, Pakistan pummeled Sri Lanka, who had been unbeaten in the tournament, at Lord’s on June 21.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat, with skipper Kumar Sangakkara holding the innings together after the side lost four wickets inside the Poweplay. Playing cautiously, Sangakkara scored 64 off 52 balls and struck seven boundaries in his innings to take the score to 138 for 6. In reply, Pakistan’s openers Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan provided a 48-run start. Afridi then displayed commendable composure in guiding Pakistan to an eight-wicket win with eight balls remaining. His match analysis of 1 for 20 and 54 off 40 balls clinched him the Man-of-the-Match award. Tillakaratne Dilshan was declared Man of the Series for his 317 runs at an average of 63.40.

Under Paul Collingwood, England clinched the 2010 World Twenty20 in spectacular fashion by trouncing Australia to win their first major trophy in international cricket.
England didn’t had a good start in the tournament as they lost their opening game to West Indies by eight wickets before the second clash against Ireland was abandoned due to heavy downpour. A tense six-wicket win over defending champions Pakistan gave Collingwood’s team the much-needed momentum, and from there they pressed on to beat South Africa by 39 runs and New Zealand by three wickets. A seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the semi-finals set up a clash with Australia at Bridgetown on May 16.
Batting first, Australia – who had not lost a single match in the tournament – were kept to 147 for 6 with David Hussey top-scoring with 59 off 54 balls after the team collapsed to 8 for 3. In defense of that middling total, Australia struck an early blow but a match-winning stand between Kevin Pietersen (47) and Craig Keiswetter (63) swung the match away.

Mohammad Hafeez Confident with Twenty20 Match experienced

Mohammad Hafeez on Shahid Afridi: "He is a match-winner for us since the past 15 years." © AFP

Players/Officials: Mohammad Hafeez
Series/Tournaments: ICC World Twenty20

Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan Twenty20 captain, has said that experienced Twenty20 players, Pakistan's past record in the World Twenty20, and familiarity with Sri Lankan conditions give his side confidence ahead of the upcoming world event.
"Winning the World Cup is always something special for the nation," Hafeez said after arrival in Colombo. "We have done it two times earlier and this time we've got a good chance and have a good team. We have also got good momentum after winning the [Twenty20 international] series against Australia [in the UAE] and that has boosted the morale of the team."
Pakistan were runners-up in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007, won the 2009 edition in England and were semi-finalists in West Indies in the 2010 event. "We have done a great job in the last three T20 tournaments," Hafeez said. "We have been very successful in the event. We really want to ensure that we should not be complacent.
"We have a good team with some of our players having played a lot of T20 cricket. Shahid Afridi is one those along with Yasir Arafat, Abdul Razzaq, Imran Nazir. We've got good specialists in the team and have a combination that can do really well in these conditions in the mega event."
Afridi is recovering from a finger injury that kept him out of the T20Is against Australia and Hafeez said he was looking forward to the allrounder's return. "He is one of the experienced lads in our side. He is a match-winner for us since the past 15 years. He has ample experience to come out and perform on any day. He is in good shape and feeling confident."
Pakistan are used to Sri Lankan conditions, having visited the country in June for three Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is. Several members of the side's World Twenty20 squad also played in the recent Sri Lanka Premier League.
"We have been allowed by the PCB to play in the SLPL mainly because they wanted us to get used to the conditions. Most of us have played here before and [also] the recent series win [against Australia] gives us the confidence that we can do something special."
Pakistan are in Group D in the World Twenty20 along with New Zealand and Bangladesh and will play their group matches in Pallekele. Hafeez said his attack has the variety to suit the conditions.
"We know that the Pallekele pitch is suited for fast bowlers and we are prepared to execute with the mix we have got. We have good seamers and spinners."
Pakistan will begin their campaign against New Zealand on September 23. Hafeez said they could not afford to take any team lightly. "Any team can make a difference even in one over. Bangladesh and Zimbabwe might not be very good Test sides but in T20s they have performed well. New Zealand are dangerous on any day and so are Bangladesh. I am wary of the pressure of the first round and the boys are ready for the challenge."
Hafeez insisted that fielding always creates a difference in this format. "T20 demands a lot of energy and we have seen the team doing well in fielding winning more matches," Hafeez said. "We are working very hard to bring more energy in the field. The boys have taken most of the catches in the recent series against Australia and we are looking forward to an improved show in the field."

Mushfiqur Rahim upbeat despite tough group

News : Bangladesh 'never better prepared' - Ashraful
Players/Officials: Mushfiqur Rahim
Series/Tournaments: ICC World Twenty20
Teams: Bangladesh
Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, has said that his team is capable of "doing anything" with luck on their side in the ICC World Twenty20. But the reality of being placed along two dangerous sides in the group stages of a tight format, where one loss could end the campaign within four days, has kept him firmly grounded.
Bangladesh are in Group D alongside New Zealand, a team that often exceeds expectations in global tournaments, and Pakistan, a team which has reached the semi-finals in every World T20 so far.
"They [Pakistan] are a really good, balanced team and they won this tournament in 2009," Mushfiqur said at a press conference in Colombo. "New Zealand are also quite strong in T20s, so we must do well with our skills and probably with some luck, anything is possible."
But not all of Mushfiqur's self-belief in his team is misplaced; he has overseen its most comprehensive build-up for a Twenty20 tournament till date having played 13 games in the last four months in varied conditions against an assortment of teams. Even better was their performance in the Asia Cup in March where they were three runs away from a maiden trophy.
"It [The Asia Cup] was a huge tournament for us, especially because we beat India and Sri Lanka and nearly beat Pakistan twice," Mushfiqur said. "In tournaments like the Asia Cup, you need a bit of luck along with the skills and we missed that luck in the final. So if the luck is in our favor in this tournament, we can do anything.
"In the Twenty20 format you never know who the favorite is. On a particular day if you can do well in all three departments you can beat anyone. Also it is very important to play consistent cricket in T20s.
"We have two warm-up matches against Zimbabwe (on September 15) and Ireland (on September 17) and hopefully we'll do well there and carry on ahead with the momentum."
One of the advantages for the Bangladesh team will be the recent experience of the likes of Mushfiqur, opener Tamim Iqbal and allrounder Mahmudullah of playing in Pallekele during the Sri Lanka Premier League last month. "A couple of us recently played in the SLPL and did well," Mushfiqur said. "Our group matches are in Pallekele and that's not a spinning track. Our pace attack is quite balanced so we hope to continue to do well with the spinners and pacers. It will give us a good chance to move to the second round."
