Jacques Kallis plays an aggressive stroke, Auckland v Kolkata Knight Riders, CLT20 qualifier, Hyderabad, September 19, 2011
Jacques Kallis will hope to lead Kolkata into the main draw

Big Picture

Remember West Germany-Austria in the 1982 football World Cup? FIFA changed its rules after that match, scheduling the last round of group matches simultaneously to avoid a team having the advantage of knowing exactly what to do to at the very least to qualify. It isn't so in the Champions League Twenty20. Kolkata Knight Riders and Somerset have a clear advantage playing the final game of the qualifiers. Depending on what happens in the Leicestershire-Ruhuna match, both teams could qualify via a close contest that ensures the loser's net run-rate does not dip too low. Neither will want to risk anything of the sort, though, and knowing a victory guarantees qualification is enough incentive to ensure aggression from both sides.
For Kolkata, elimination is unthinkable. They have the tournament sponsors' logo splashed across their t-shirts and their superstar owner will arrive in Hyderabad for the match. Even without Gautam Gambhir and Eoin Morgan, they still have more players with international experience than Somerset, and will want to win in a more convincing fashion than they did in the first game. Their high-profile batsmen let them down against Auckland and Kolkata may think about rejigging the batting order.
Somerset arrived in Hyderabad only a day before their first game, but a last-ball win is just the tonic you need to shake off the jet-lag. Kolkata will be a tougher test though: Somerset's slow bowlers, who stifled Auckland, may not have as much success against Yusuf Pathan, and Steve Snell may not deal as easily with Brett Lee's yorkers as he did with Kyle Mills' length balls.
 Team news
Jacques Kallis averages 34.78 in Twenty20 cricket, but scores of 33 off 35 balls are not quick enough at the top of the order. He may drop down with Manoj Tiwary moving up. Jaidev Unadkat's one over against Auckland went for 14 runs, so L Balaji may replace him.
Somerset are missing several players due to their international commitments and are struggling to put out an XI, never mind having reserves. They are likely to go in with the same side that beat Auckland.
 Watch out for …
Rajat Bhatia conceded only 14 runs off four overs in Kolkata's first match. Somerset won't have seen him before and may find his slow cutters a challenge.
Somerset's middle order got them through their first game but they will be hoping for more from the top order. Roelof van der Merwe, who has a strike-rate of 133.39 in Twenty20s, could be the key to a swift start.
 Key contest
Every time Murali Kartik bowls in a high-profile tournament in India, there is talk about him having a point to prove. If he can get rid of Yusuf Pathan, it will add further validity to the claim he should have played more for India.
 Stats and trivia
Jacques Kallis is third on the list of players with most half-centuries in Twenty20 matches. His 21 is behind only Brad Hodge's 26 and David Hussey's 23.
 Quotes
"We tried too hard and got into trouble. So there were some lessons to take there."
Jacques Kallis after the narrow win against Auckland.
"Expectations were low from outside the team. However, the side themselves were always confident they could win."
Steve Snell on Somerset's under-dog tag.         Source For Preview:Cricinfo, com

Ruhuna v Trinidad & Tobago, September 19
Start time 16.00 (10.30 GMT)

Each team plays only two matches in the qualifying round, and needs to win both to be guaranteed of a place in the main draw. Ruhuna and Trinidad & Tobago are pooled with Leicestershire and run-rate could come into play if all teams are level on a win each. A big loss for either side will effectively knock them out.
T&T will start favourites, given their squad is similar to the one that reached the final of the first Champions League Twenty20 in 2009. Adrian Barath, Lendl Simmons, Ravi Rampaul and Darren Bravo have all chosen to play the Champions League rather than the Twenty20 internationals in England. T&T relied heavily on their top three of Barath, Simmons and Bravo for runs during their victorious campaign in the Caribbean T20 in January. It was their bowling, however, that was the crux of their unbeaten run; the highest score they allowed any team was 136.
Ruhuna's win in the Sri Lanka Cricket Inter-Provincial Twenty20 Tournament was also built on strong bowling performances - they twice bowled out the opposition - but they will be missing their best bowler, Suraj Randiv, who has chosen to play for Chennai Super Kings in the Champions League, as well as Chanaka Welegedara, who is playing for Sri Lanka in the SSC Test.

Team news
Sanath Jayasuriya is the biggest name in the Ruhuna squad but has off late been found more often in the commentary box than on the field. Apart from him and Dinesh Chandimal, the rest of the squad consists of players unknown on the international stage. We may get a glimpse of Tillakaratne Dilshan's brother, allrounder TN Sampath.
Ruhuna (probable): 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Mahela Udawatte (capt) , 3 TN Sampath, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 5 Janaka Gunaratne, 6 Milinda Siriwardana, 7 Chinthaka Perera, 8 Omesh Wijesiriwardene, 9 Arosh Janoda, 10 Yashodha Lanka, 11 Alankara Asanka Silva
T&T had a settled line-up through their Caribbean T20 campaign and should feature the same side against Ruhuna.
T&T (probable): 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Jason Mohammed, 5 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Daren Ganga (capt), 7 Sherwin Ganga, 8 Kevon Cooper, 9 Samuel Badree, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Sunil Narine

Darren Bravo smashes a Tino Best bouncer during his 70 off 35 balls, Barbados v Trinidad & Tobago , Caribbean T20, Barbados, January 21, 2011
Darren Bravo averaged 48 in the Caribbean T20

Watch out for …
In recent times Caribbean players have earned as much recognition for their exploits in foreign Twenty20 competitions as for the West Indies team. For Darren Bravo, this is an opportunity not only to impress the West Indies selectors, but also the owners of IPL franchises.
Dinesh Chandimal has had a stop-start beginning to his international career: after a century during the ODI series in England, he was dropped for the final two home ODIs against Australia. The Twenty20 format may not be the best place to show he has overcome some technical deficiencies but he will be looking to impress the Sri Lankan selectors.
Key contest
Ruhuna's batsmen v T&T spinners: Offspinning allrounder Sherwin Ganga, offspinner Sunil Narine and legspinner Samuel Badree had plenty of success in the Caribbean T20 but will now be bowling against batsmen well-versed in playing spin.

Stats & trivia
During the Caribbean T20, four of T&T's bowlers had economy-rates of less than six an over, with Badree going at just 3.90 an over in his 20 overs.
Quotes
"Who knows, in the future cricket could be an Olympic sport and we could even play as a nation."
Daren Ganga has big aspirations for his T&T side.
"We are missing out on Chanaka Welegedara, Suraj Randiv and Shaminda Eranga, who are all doing national duty against Australia. The bowling department is a bit weak."
Ruhuna coach Sumithra Warnakulasuriya on his side's shortcomings.
