Big Picture
On a tour of many disappointments for India, Tuesday's contest against Sri Lanka offers them a chance, albeit an extremely difficult one, of prolonging their fight to stay alive in the tri-series. Going by recent results - three straight defeats - the bonus-point win that India need to entertain any hope of qualifying for the finals seems a long shot.
Their bowling attack is weakened due to injuries, their batsmen have struggled, there's been talk of a communication gap between players, their captain wasn't even aware the team stood a chance of qualifying going into their final league game and they are up against opponents who've peaked impressively.
There is much at stake for India in what might or might not be their last match of the trip. A shot at a place in the finals aside, there'll be those in the team who'll be under pressure to keep their spots in the ODI side as the selectors meet to pick the squad for the Asia Cup on Wednesday. The misery of the India teams of the 90s when touring overseas has returned to haunt this side and Tuesday's contest is as much an opportunity to restore some pride, to slightly repair a damaged reputation - something that, if achieved, will mark a significant rise from a spate of on-field problems that has let the team down.
A bonus-point win is only the first step - India's fate will then hinge on the result of Sri Lanka's game against Australia on March 2 - but it will be a sign of determination to fight back, a strong urge to reach the finals and give some back to a team that's been responsible for the misery inflicted on them over the last two months.
Sri Lanka are well-equipped to thwart any such turnaround after three straight wins, the third a hard-fought one against Australia in Hobart, the venue for Tuesday's game. Both Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene have scored at the top, their young middle order has been productive, and the bowling largely consistent and free of injury. A defeat is a possibility, a cataclysmic fall that will concede a bonus point a very distant one.

 In the spotlight
Another failure could land Virender Sehwag in a tricky situation with the selectors ahead of the Asia Cup. Sehwag has scores of 23, 10, 20, 0 and 5 and, in an urgent need of recovery, his own extravagance often cuts short his stay at the crease.
Kumar Sangakkara has delighted in this series but only in parts, walking in, scoring a fluent, attractive cameo and then heading back. He has been consistent in his short bursts of strokemaking, but has failed to push on. His scores read 26, 22, 31, 30, 8 and 22.
 Team news
Zaheer Khan has a calf injury and Vinay Kumar has hurt his hamstring. Irfan Pathan should be fit but it remains to be seen if he's affected by the collision he had with Suresh Raina in the previous game. They were beaten soundly by Australia but India may be forced to go in with the same line-up.
India (possible): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Umesh Yadav.
After their win in Hobart against the hosts, Sri Lanka could be tempted to go in with the same team.
Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Farveez Maharoof, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Rangana Herath.
 Stats and trivia
  • Kumar Sangakkara joins Muttiah Muralitharan with his 63rd ODI against India - the third-highest for a Sri Lanka player against India. Sanath Jayasuriya has played 89 games against India, and Mahela Jayawardene 73.
  • No India batsman has managed a century in this tournament so far. Since 2001, this is only the second ODI tournament where India have played at least seven matches and not managed a century. The previous series was the bilateral Natwest series in England, in 2007, which the visitors lost 3-4.
 Quotes
"That would be saying I am very optimistic, seeing that we have not consistently done well with the bat - it means whatever the opposition scores we will have to score in 40 overs, which will be a very difficult task. But I am happy that at least there is a chance, subject to some other game, and I would love to take it."
MS Dhoni concedes winning with a bonus point is a stiff ask.[preview Source:Cricinfo.com]

Big Picture
It would be a mistake to dismiss the three-match Twenty20 series at the end of this unpredictable tour involving Pakistan and England as inconsequential. It is nothing of the sort. Twenty20 might be anathema to some but the size of its audience is undeniable. There is a World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September to plan for and these matches will be vital preparation for both sides. There has been little logic in what we have seen so far in the other two formats. England, ranked as the No. 1 Test side in the world, were trounced 3-0 in the Test series; with little reputation in the 50-over game they responded by returning the favour with a whitewash in the ODIs. Add the fact that T20, if not the lottery many claim, is more unpredictable to call, and only a fool would be confident of the outcome.
England turn to their third captain of the tour with Stuart Broad stepping up for T20. It is testimony to their unity that they can make the transition between captains with no sense of discord. Pakistan will soon be considering a replacement for Misbah-ul-Haq and a young T20 captain would be one way to begin their rebuilding process, but the captaincy triumvirate might be one English export that never takes hold.
Form guide (most recent first)

Players to watch ...
Awais Zia, a dashing left-hander, gets an opportunity as Younis Khan and Azhar Ali return home. Zia, 25, from Chakwal in the Punjab, has even been called "the new Boom Boom." No pressure there then. The player the English media wants to watch is Alastair Cook, whose flowering as an ODI batsman has been followed by his addition to the T20 squad. "Injury cover only," insist England nervously, whether because they are frightened of undermining Broad, have no intention of playing Cook, or are being strangely playful, who can tell?
Team news
Team news is patchy. Broad admitted that England had injuries and then refused to say what injuries they were, encouraging more Cook Fever. Ravi Bopara's bad back may rule him out although he trained on Wednesday. Pakistan will play Awais Zia but the presence of Hammad Azam, overlooked for the ODIs, ahead of Imran Farhat is less certain especially as Misbah has expressed the wish for those who failed in the one-day series to make amends.Pakistan (possible) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Hammad Azam, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Umar Akmal (wk), 5 Awais Zia, 6 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Shoaib Malik, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema
England (possible) 1 Alex Hales, 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk) 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Samit Patel 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Jos Buttler, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Graeme Swann, 10 Steven Finn
Pitch and conditions
Pitches in Dubai have offered enough pace to encourage strokeplay so the odds are on a high-scoring match. Stats and trivia
  • Temperatures in parts of the UAE fell as low as 9C in mountainous areas, 12C on the coast, on Tuesday with storm-force winds, sandstorms and rough seas.
  • Awais Zia is uncapped and the only new face in Pakistan's T20 squad.
  • Broad has missed three of the six Twenty20 matches since he was named captain due to injury.
  • Mushtaq Mohammad, the former Pakistan captain, has called for Pakistan's one-day side to be dismantled.  Quotes
"No reassurances needed to be given. We've worked closely as three captains, as we have done for nearly a year now, and that doesn't change overnight."
Stuart Broad, England's Twenty20 captain, less concerned than the media about the addition of Alastair Cook to the squad."Sometime you feel home sickness. It is not that I'm giving an excuse on this matter but it happens when you are not playing at home."
Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan's captain, reflecting after the 4-0 defeat in the one-day series upon a home series that is nothing of the sort. [Preview source Cricinfo.com]

0.1NL McCullum to Levi, 1 run, full on leg and swept fine, the throw is fired in as they rush through for the single and Amla is just home as Baz backhands it onto the stumps
0.3NL McCullum to Levi, no run, full on leg and clipped to midwicket
0.4NL McCullum to Levi, SIX, well well, Levi gets down to sweep, completely top edges it and amazingly it carries well over fine leg's head and over the rope, that was not struck well at all
0.5NL McCullum to Levi, no run, fires this into the pads and the ball somehow squeezes through the gap between pad and leg stump, Levi was beaten all ends up there
0.6NL McCullum to Levi, no run, gets forward and defends to midwicket
South Africa 8/0   RE Levi 7* (5b 1x6)
1.2Bracewell to Levi, SIX, poor ball down leg and Levi gets on the front foot and flicks it away with far more power than his demeanour suggested and it went high into the stands at backward square
1.3Bracewell to Levi, no run, outside off and Levi is beaten as tries to pull
1.4Bracewell to Levi, SIX, banged in short on middle and Levi this time plays with authority as he powerfully pulls it in between the stands at backward square
1.5Bracewell to Levi, FOUR, poor bowling from Bracewell, full on leg and Levi flicks it away again, the only saving grace for the bowler is that this is hit along the ground so he only concedes four
1.6Bracewell to Levi, no run, played into the off side to end a productive over for South Africa
South Africa 25/0   RE Levi 23* (10b 1x4 3x6)
2.2NL McCullum to Levi, no run, fired into middle at 102kph and he defends to leg
2.3NL McCullum to Levi, 5 wides, poor there from the bowler, fired down leg past both the flick by Levi and the gloves of Baz and it runs off to the fence
2.3NL McCullum to Levi, 1 run, well well, flicks a full ball towards mid-on who fumbles, they run on the misfield and the fielder fires in a flat throw to Nathan McCullum at the bowler's end who takes the bails off. Levi is in by the smallest of margins, but he only stays after initially being given out on the screen within two seconds of the throw! Echoes of Bruce Oxenford over in Brisbane
South Africa 31/1   RE Levi 24* (12b 1x4 3x6)
3.1Southee to Levi, FOUR, full outside off and Levi heaves across the line through wide mid-on and it races away
3.2Southee to Levi, no run, bangs in the bouncer outside off and Levi sways easily out of harm's way
3.3Southee to Levi, no run, again short outside off and this time Levi tries to pull but can't connect, Southee is quick to have a few words as the War of Wellington continues
3.4Southee to Levi, 1 run, full toss which swung in late, squeezed out to long-on
South Africa 40/1   RE Levi 29* (16b 2x4 3x6)
4.1Nicol to Levi, 1 leg bye, gets this to pitch on middle and turns down leg, hits Levi on the pad as he tries to sweep, rolls away
4.4Nicol to Levi, 2 wides, terrible ball miles down leg which Baz can't collect cleanly, they run a wide in addition to the compulsory extra
4.6Nicol to Levi, SIX, in the slot outside off and Levi smacks it over the long-off boundary and clocks a TV worker on the back of the head as he tries to evade the ball whizzing at him
South Africa 51/2   RE Levi 35* (18b 2x4 4x6)
5.4Southee to Levi, SIX, that is a ludicrously good stroke, it is a short ball aimed at his head at good pace, Levi is on the front foot and goes through with a short-arm pull and sends the ball packing over the midwicket boundary
5.5Southee to Levi, no run, short outside off and Levi again tries to pull to leg and misses
5.6Southee to Levi, 1 run
South Africa 63/2   RE Levi 42* (21b 2x4 5x6)
6.1Hira to Levi, SIX, and is dispatched first ball, Levi puts the front foot down and lofts cleanly straight over the bowler's head over the team dugouts
6.2Hira to Levi, no run, tosses it up on leg and beats Levi, hit on the pad on leg
6.3Hira to Levi, 1 run, hoists a short ball away into the deep at midwicket
6.5Hira to Levi, 1 run, drives a full ball outside off down the ground to bring up an outstanding 50 from only 25 balls, he has given South Africa a quality start
South Africa 72/2   RE Levi 50* (25b 2x4 6x6)
7.1Mills to Levi, 1 run, pulled away into the leg side
7.3Mills to Levi, SIX, doesn't time this well at all, probably a top edge, but Levi has the power of Os du Randt in the South African rugby team's scrum and he just heaves a short ball outside off over the long-on fence with very little timing
7.4Mills to Levi, no run
7.5Mills to Levi, 1 run, chips this ball outside off three-quarters of the way to the cover boundary as the deep fielder runs in to collect
South Africa 81/2   RE Levi 58* (29b 2x4 7x6)
8.2Franklin to Levi, 1 run, only 112kph and full on the pads, worked to long-on
8.4Franklin to Levi, 1 run, full outside off and squeezed it towards cover
South Africa 86/2   RE Levi 60* (31b 2x4 7x6)
9.4Mills to Levi, SIX, short slower ball outside off at 114kph but Levi spots it early and flatbats it over long-off with ease
9.5Mills to Levi, FOUR, smacks a full ball outside off past a diving cover and it races to the fence, Levi is looking for a hundred here
9.6Mills to Levi, 1 run, pulls away a short ball on off to deep midwicket
South Africa 105/2   RE Levi 71* (34b 3x4 8x6)
10.1Hira to Levi, no run, fired into leg and jammed back to Hira
10.2Hira to Levi, 1 run, flicks a full ball on leg through towards long-on
10.5Hira to Levi, no run, fired into middle and Levi crunches it towards cover where Guptill dives brilliantly to cut it off
10.6Hira to Levi, SIX, Levi doesn't quite get underneath this ball but nevertheless hits his ninth six tonight, hit flat towards long-off where Franklin dived but couldn't get a hand to it as it went over his head
South Africa 114/2   RE Levi 78* (38b 3x4 9x6)
11.2Bracewell to Levi, SIX, and you can see why, Levi's sixes are into double digits, hits a ball outside off flat down the ground and into the sightscreen
11.3Bracewell to Levi, SIX, that is a record, the most sixes ever in a Twenty20 International innings, pulls a short ball on middle and off with impunity over the square leg boundary
11.4Bracewell to Levi, 1 leg bye, fired into the pads and it hits them, rolls away
11.6Bracewell to Levi, SIX, that's a dozen!! 12th six for Levi, full outside off and Levi slams it over the boundary with ease, absolutely smashed that, who wants to bowl to him?
South Africa 135/2   RE Levi 96* (42b 3x4 12x6)
12.3Hira to Levi, 1 run, full outside leg, Levi sweeps well but picks out deep backward square
South Africa 137/2   RE Levi 97* (43b 3x4 12x6)
13.1Southee to Levi, 2 runs, full outside off and he drives through the covers into the deep, they rush back for a couple
13.2Southee to Levi, 1 run, there it is, the fastest ever Twenty20 International hundred from Richard Levi! What a maiden hundred to make for your country, drove a full ball outside off into the deep and shrieked in delight, kissed the badge and beamed a grin as wide as the Antarctic Ocean
South Africa 140/2   RE Levi 100* (45b 3x4 12x6)
14.1Hira to Levi, 1 run, comes down the track and drills it to long-off
14.3Hira to Levi, FOUR, Levi decides he hasn't hit enough fours tonight, so gets down on a knee and sweeps it through midwicket and out to the fence
14.4Hira to Levi, 1 run, backs away well outside leg and cuts into the deep
14.6Hira to Levi, SIX, Levi hits the ball into Seddon Road, glad my car isn't parked there, he came down and launched this over wide long-on past the Northern Districts offices and out of the ground
South Africa 161/2   RE Levi 112* (49b 4x4 13x6)
15.2Southee to Levi, 1 run, smears a ball on leg into the deep at backward square
15.4Southee to Levi, 1 wide, fired in down leg and Levi is beaten, but New Zealand are the ones who are already well and truly beaten
15.4Southee to Levi, FOUR, gets some luck as he inside edges his nemesis Southee pat the stumps and down to fine leg
15.5Southee to Levi, 1 run, worked to deep backward square

The Big Picture
England's whitewash in the Tests was unexpected and so, too, is their current standing in the one-day series. They are already in an unassailable position following two victories in Abu Dhabi - spearheaded by Alastair Cook and Steven Finn - and a win in Dubai will give them a notable series victory which would buck the trend of their recent struggles away from home in this format.
And they hold the advantage despite only two batsmen firing. Cook has been outstanding with a pair of well-crafted hundreds and was well supported on both occasions by his Essex team-mate Ravi Bopara. The others still have significant issues to confront and it can't be left to the captain all the time. Unlike the batsmen, all the bowlers have played key roles and, as in Test cricket, England possess a fine attack.
Pakistan have plenty of issues to sort out. They appear short of a quality batsman and can't quite decide on the balance of their team. They have got one game left to find out some answers before it is too late to save the series.

Quietly Samit Patel is have a good few months for England. He didn't lose ground during the whitewash in India and has played a crucial part in the two victories here. His left-arm spin is proving hard to score off - only Afridi, briefly, took to him in Abu Dhabi - while he is selfless with the bat when needed and held a decent catch to remove the dangerous Umar Akmal in the second game. There could well be changes to England's Test squad for Sri Lanka and Patel has done himself no harm.
It took a month, but England finally managed to get through an innings without major damage against Saeed Ajmal during the second one-day international. Ajmal's figures of 1 for 54 were ordinary compared to his recent exploits, but it would be dangerous to suggest England are close to cracking him. It will be a surprise if he goes two consecutive matches with little impact.
 Team news
Pakistan appear very unsure about what to do with their team, but the lower-order clearly needs to be strengthened. One option is to recall Shoaib Malik, who can also bowl some offspin, or bring in the young allrounder Hammad Azam. Either way it could be Abdur Rehman who makes away after a wicketless display in Abu Dhabi and a horrid 12-ball innings. They may also feel compelled to change the wicketkeeper after two poor games by Umar Akmal, but then balance becomes an issue.
Pakistan (possible) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Umar Akmal (wk), 7 Hammad Azam, 8 Shahid Afridi, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema
England have a fully fit squad to select from for the first time in the series so it's a question of whether they want any rotation. James Anderson could make way for Tim Bresnan but it would be tough on Anderson who bowled well in the second match. Kevin Pietersen remains under pressure.
England (possible) 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Kevin Pietersen, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 7 Samit Patel, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn
 Pitch and conditions
A sandstorm caused significant issues for England's training session and the players were forced to wear sunglasses. The wind is due to be strong again on match-day so there could yet be a few problems. The pitch is unlikely to differ much from what has been on offer throughout the tour.
 Stats and trivia
  • No England batsman has scored three consecutive one-day international hundreds
  • James Anderson became England's leading wicket-taker against Pakistan during the previous match
  • Pakistan's batsmen have yet to score a half-century in the series  Quotes
"Cooky's such a good player, who is fulfilling his role in the team really, really well. You can't complain when you get two hundreds in successive games."
Kevin Pietersen was full of praise for his captain.
"England have performed very well in both ODIs. They have beaten us in every department."
Misbah-ul-Haq knows where Pakistan need to improve. Everywhere.

At 34, David Hussey finally looks like holding down a permanent place in Australia’s ODI team. In and out of the side for four years, Hussey was given another chance by John Inverarity’s panel and has rewarded them by being Australia’s leading run scorer in the first three games of the series. Being dropped so often during his international career has forced him to play every game as if it’s his last, and it’s an approach that is benefiting Australia at the moment.
Kumar Sangakkara is on the verge of becoming the tenth man to score 10,000 ODI runs. He needs 11 to reach that milestone, and he will be the third Sri Lankan behind Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene to get there. He also remains one of the most respected batsmen in world cricket, and having made starts in all three Commonwealth Bank Series matches so far, Sangakkara doesn’t seem far from posting a big one.
Sri Lanka might view their tie with India as a missed opportunity, but it at least put them on the board in the Commonwealth Bank Series. All the same, they need a win soon or risk leaving their run for the finals too late. And to have the best chance of success, they need runs out of their senior batsmen; none of Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga have scored a half-century so far in this tournament. The SCG might give them some hope, for they have won five of their past seven one-day internationals there, including three victories over Australia. In the past decade, it has been comfortably their best ground in Australia.
For the Australians, this match is something of a flashback: Ricky Ponting will captain the side for the first time since he quit the leadership after last year’s World Cup. Australia hope it will be a one-off, and that Michael Clarke’s hamstring injury will allow him to play the next game on Sunday. Whatever the case, Ponting’s appointment has caused some debate, with the nominal vice-captain David Warner not considered experienced enough to lead the side. Captaincy apart, Australia can regain their lead on the series table if they win this match, but a loss would make the second half of the tournament a much closer proposition.

February 12, Adelaide
Start time 1350 (0320 GMT)

Big Picture
The triangular series roadshow rolls into Adelaide on Sunday, when Australia and India meet for the second time. Already Australia have jumped clear on top of the table thanks to victories in their first two games, while India are on the board having beaten Sri Lanka in Perth. Not that either team was that convincing against Sri Lanka at the WACA; Australia's batsmen struggled and India made hard work of a chase that should not have been too tricky. Adelaide Oval should provide the bats men with more comfort.
Australia have taken the opportunity to rest Michael Hussey, which should mean Peter Forrest will makes his debut at a venue he has enjoyed, at least in the longer format - he has two first-class centuries and an average of 65.14 at Adelaide Oval. Mitchell Marsh could provide some excitement if he is included. The captain Michael Clarke said after Friday's victory that while it was hard to change a winning side, it was also important to give opportunities to players, so Marsh and Forrest will both be firmly in the mix.
India are still searching for their first win over a Clarke-led side on this tour, their only victory over Australia having come in a Twenty20. The short turnaround for the hosts, who were due to arrive in Adelaide the night before the game, could work in India's favour.

 In the spotlight
The WACA is not known as a spinner's pitch but Xavier Doherty certainly enjoyed bowling there on Friday night. He turned the ball, at times immensely, and picked up 2 for 24 from his ten overs. "He was outstanding once again," Michael Clarke said after the game. "He continues to be a very good consistent performer for us. He can bowl in the Powerplay, he's spinning the ball, I think he's an important player for us and he's continuing to do a good job."
Like Doherty, R Ashwin enjoyed bowling at the WACA against Sri Lanka, where he took 3 for 32. Adelaide Oval should also offer some assistance for the slow bowlers, although they must be careful not to drop short, given the small boundaries square of the wicket.
 Team news
Australia will rest Michael Hussey, who was to remain in Perth, and Ben Hilfenhaus has also been released from the squad. Mitchell Marsh will join the group after playing in Western Australia's Sheffield Shield match during the week, although it's unlikely he and Daniel Christian will both play. Hussey's absence means Peter Forrest is almost a certainty to make his debut.
Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 David Hussey, 6 Peter Forrest, 7 Daniel Christian/Mitchell Marsh, 8 Ryan Harris, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Clint McKay.
India's rotation policy has meant changes in the top order, but a team spokesman said the policy was not rigid and the primary aim was to qualify for the finals. That could mean an unchanged outfit after their success against Sri Lanka.
India (possible) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Vinay Kumar, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Zaheer Khan.
 Pitch and conditions
The Adelaide Oval surface is always good for batting. That said, Victoria batted first in a Ryobi Cup match there last week and were bowled out for 123. The forecast for Sunday is for a partly cloudy day with a top of 26C.
Stats and trivia
  • Australia and India have met in four ODIs at Adelaide Oval, all of which have been won by Australia
  • Australia's attack is so inexperienced at this level that their leading ODI wicket-taker is Michael Clarke with 53
 Quotes
"The feeling in the group is really good. We're showing that we know how to win games of cricket, which is good and means guys are confident."
Michael Clarke

Big Picture
An Australian side in the pinkest of form meet Sri Lankan opponents with plenty of improve upon following a first-up loss to India in a mediocre match that was also at the WACA ground. While the tourists will benefit from having played a match at the ground, a series of starts with the bat, some middling bowling and hesitance in the field - from the newly-appointed captain Mahela Jayawardene's field placements as much as his men's occasionally indifferent attacks on the ball - must be rectified if they are to get close to the hosts.
Michael Clarke's major concern as captain appears to be who to rotate out of the side to hand a debut to the adopted Queenslander Peter Forrest. None of David Warner, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey or his brother David will want to sit out, and the desire for a varied bowling attack would appear to keep Daniel Christian safe as the allrounder. The bowling attack functioned smoothly against India at the MCG despite losing Brett Lee, and Mitchell Starc in particular will look forward to another match in Perth after his strong Test showing at the ground.
Sri Lanka's rebuild after another change of cricket administration, captain and coach requires solid results to bolster confidence and create belief. Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Dinesh Chandimal might have added to it had one gone on from a start to punch out a substantial innings against India, but as it was their series of starts allowed India the luxury of a chase where the required run rate was never stretched. Lasith Malinga can also produce the spark required, but may require more aggressive fields from his captain.

Sri Lanka LWWLL
 In the spotlight
Mitchell Starc first made an impression as an international bowler against Sri Lanka at the Gabba in the third ODI played in late 2010. Now armed with the knowledge imparted by Wasim Akram, Starc has added consistency and later swing to his repertoire, and at the WACA ground he has a chance to push still further to retain his place once the likes of James Pattinson and Peter Siddle come under consideration for the second half of the series.
Angelo Mathews was a match-winner for Sri Lanka on their last visit down under, salvaging a game at the MCG that really should have been lost by a fair margin. He produced a quietly impressive display against India, cracking 33 unbeaten late innings runs then fetching 2 for 31 with the ball. As the man most likely to succeed Jayawardene as captain, Mathews will want to make a similar or greater impact against Australia, whose players grew to respect his batting on last year's tour of Sri Lanka.
 Team news
Having flagged the inclusion of Peter Forrest for his debut, the Australian selectors must still decide who to leave out for him. David Hussey or Daniel Christian appear the most likely to make way, although the national selector John Inverarity suggested when naming the squad that senior batsmen like Ponting and Michael Hussey might be rested at times. Ben Hilfenhaus is in the squad as Brett Lee's replacement but the bowling attack should be unchanged.Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 David Hussey/Peter Forrest 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Ryan Harris, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Clint McKay.
Rangana Herath may be in line for a recall to the Sri Lanka XI on a Perth surface that offered some turn in the India match. He may come in at the expense of Lahiru Thirimanne, who seemed surplus to requirements batting at No. 8 and not bowling.
Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Lahiru Thirimanne/Rangana Herath, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Dhammika Prasad.
 Pitch and conditions
The surface for the India v Sri Lanka match provided Perth's habitual bounce and pace but also appreciable spin, offering something to bowlers of all speeds and varieties. Expect something similar for this game.
 Stats and trivia
  • Sri Lanka have never beaten Australia in eight ODIs played between the teams in Perth, and have won only two of 16 matches overall at the WACA ground, the last in 1996
  • Should he debut for Australia, Peter Forrest will be the first Queensland-based batting debutant chosen for the Australia ODI team since Jimmy Maher in 1998 - Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson and James Hopes have played as allrounders.
 Quotes
"Our plan was always to start well, and then through the middle give some development opportunities to some players and then pick our best team again. But results along the way determine that."
Mickey Arthur on Australia's triangular series strategy.

Big Picture
Just over 10 months have passed since that Wankhede night, last April. Within that period, the fates of the two teams that brought the best out of each other in that memorable World Cup final have nose-dived in bizarre style. India have been mercilessly stripped of their No. 1 Test ranking, the sunset on their golden generation of batsmen hastened by eight successive away drubbings. But their one-day outfit still holds promise, with the energy of fresh legs and the power of broad bats, for the moment at least, masking the worry of poor techniques on quick pitches.
Sri Lanka have had it worse. Finishing second-best in two successive World Cup finals is a tragedy in itself, but even that pales in comparison to what has transpired since. They have endured series after wretched series, home and away, against Australia, Pakistan and South Africa, with no silverware to show for their efforts except in the Twenty20 format. Their players haven't been paid by a board that is now bankrupt. Battered on the field and off it, Sri Lanka are already under their third captain since the World Cup. Mahela Jayawardene led them in the 2008 edition of the CB series, and his reluctant return to the musical chair gives rise to the uneasy feeling that Sri Lanka haven't progressed in four seasons.
Both teams are desperate for the familiarity of better times, and their first encounter since Wankhede will provide them just that. No two sides have played each other more often in ODI history, especially in recent years - 34 of their 129 clashes came between 2008 and 2010. This series kicks off another glut of games between these thick foes, with the Asia Cup and a bilateral series in Sri Lanka to follow in quick succession. Establishing early supremacy in Australia could prove integral in determining which side heals better in the coming months.

Sri Lanka WWLLL
 In the spotlight
MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag haven't played together in an ODI since the World Cup final, though they have individually featured in 11 and four games, respectively. When Sehwag's been fit, Dhoni has been rested. When Sehwag was expected to play, he was 'rested' in the first game of this series. Murmurs of dressing-room disagreements between India's captain and vice-captain mean their internal dynamics will be scrutinised when they take the field in Perth. Signs are that Sehwag will play - you normally don't 'rest' a batsman who smashed the highest score in ODI history in his last outing.
India wouldn't have forgotten Thisara Perera who thumped them to all corners of Mumbai in the end overs of the World Cup final. It wasn't the first time Perera showcased his big-hitting skills through the leg side, and it wasn't the last. More recently, he cracked five sixes in an unbeaten 69 off 44 balls to help Sri Lanka chase 300 against South Africa. His late-swinging yorkers could make him effective at the back-end of Sri Lanka's bowling innings too.
 Team news
India won the last edition of the CB series by playing to the conditions, as opposed to their traditional strengths. Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Irfan Pathan and Sreesanth, all played big roles with the new ball, while spin was relegated to a support role. MS Dhoni went the other way on Sunday, and the move backfired when India's three inexperienced spinners came unstuck in a rain-reduced game. The Perth track will be more amenable to pace, and Dhoni will consider bringing in Pathan for Ravindra Jadeja, whose 2.4 overs leaked 41 runs against Australia. Sehwag is expected to play, with Gautam Gambhir making way at the top of the order. Zaheer Khan or Umesh Yadav could be in line for a call-up too, since India could do with an extra yard of pace.
India: (possible) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Irfan Pathan/Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Vinay Kumar, 10 & 11 Praveen Kumar/Umesh Yadav/Zaheer Khan
Injury kept Jayawardene out of the latter stages of the ODI-leg of the South Africa tour. He will resurface in the middle order on Wednesday. On form, Angelo Mathews should make way, but the axe is likely to fall on Lahiru Thirimanne who hit a match-winning 69 in the final ODI in South Africa.
Sri Lanka: (possible) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Chanaka Welegedara/Dhammika Prasad
 Pitch and conditions
The WACA strip was zippy in the Test match, and is expected to behave similarly, but it would require bowlers with real pace to make that count. The conditions in Perth are dry and hot, meaning the pitch has cracks to go with its green tinge. The teams will have an interesting time zeroing in on their bowling units.
 Stats and trivia
  • India hold the advantage against Sri Lanka in ODIs, with a 68-50 head-to-head record. They also have a 2-1 advantage in games in Australia.
  • Only one batsman has scored over 3000 runs against one particular team - Sachin Tendulkar against Australia (3060). If he gets 18 runs on Wednesday, he would have repeated the feat against Sri Lanka.
 Quotes
"I think they haven't played really well in the Test series. That's a plus point for us. [But] They are a different team when it comes to the one-dayers. We are up for it and we are ready to go."
Angelo Mathews isn't taking India lightly
"[On] Any day, any team can beat anybody."

Sachin Tendulkar walks back after being dismissed, India v Sri Lanka, final, World Cup 2011, Mumbai, April 2, 2011
Sachin Tendulkar is back in blue for the first time since the World Cup final

Big Picture
Five summers ago India regained some pride after an unhappy Test series by claiming the triangular ODI trophy. It was the start of their road to lifting the World Cup in 2011. This time around the tourists are again seeking a new start, having been bullied and battered to a 4-0 hiding by Australia in the Tests. There was little of the acrimony that shrouded 2007-08, partly because India were never really close enough to Australia for the two combatants to trade blows, and the tourists will enjoy the chance to return to a format they are well versed in.
Despite a mediocre showing at the World Cup, Australia retained their No. 1 ODI ranking, and under Michael Clarke have won series in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa to maintain the position. The team is in a state of some transition, as injuries and form have resulted in the inclusion of several new faces in the squad for the first three matches, Peter Forrest among them. Ricky Ponting, Clarke and Michael Hussey remain critical contributors to the batting order, while Brett Lee's speed and experience has again been called upon.
India have been bolstered by the return of Sachin Tendulkar for his first ODI assignment since the World Cup, while a victory in the second Twenty20 international at the MCG on Friday night gave the visitors their first win of any kind on the tour. MS Dhoni leads a side that is growing gradually younger, with the batting trio of Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma all expected to score heavily across the series, as well as providing plenty of energy in the field.

 In the spotlight
Ryan Harris built up a formidable ODI record in 17 matches up to July 2010, scooping 41 wickets at 16.12, his strike-rate an eye-popping 20.60. However injuries and cautious selection limited him strictly to Test match duty in the 18 months since, preventing Harris from attempting to maintain his enviable record. It will be a difficult task for Harris to keep nabbing wickets with such regularity against India and Sri Lanka, while also maintaining his fitness to be sound for the West Indies tour that follows this series.
Sachin Tendulkar has not donned the blue shirt for India since the World Cup final, concentrating on Test matches instead. However the pursuit of his 100th international century has now gone on far longer than Tendulkar or any of his team-mates would have liked, hastening his return for the triangular series. Given the decent if not altogether imperious form displayed by the ODI team in his absence, Tendulkar will need to demonstrate his value quickly, for unless he intends to go on to another World Cup, the time for regeneration is at hand.
 Team news
Having omitted Shaun Marsh due to his dismal Test form, the national selectors must choose who should partner David Warner at the top of the order. Matthew Wade excelled at the top in the first T20 in Sydney, while Ponting, Clarke and Hussey have all taken the role in the past. Daniel Christian should slip into the allrounder's spot while Mitchell Marsh is absent for a Sheffield Shield fixture.
Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 David Hussey, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Xavier Doherty.
The question of where to include Tendulkar hangs over India's selections, and a decision must also be made about whether to leave out a batsman to make room for Ravindra Jadeja. The likes of Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav and Vinay Kumar are in a duel for the final pace berth.
India (possible) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Zaheer Khan.
 Pitch and conditions
The MCG surface should be sound for batting while offering little for the bowlers, though rain and cloud is forecast for the afternoon.
Stats and trivia
  • The match marks the return of the triangular series in Australia for the first time since India's last visit in 2007-08
  • Australia's last ODI meeting with India was the World Cup quarter-final, won by the hosts by five wickets in Ahmedabad
 Quotes
"Our success in the Test series against India is now irrelevant. We know from recent experience that if we're not switched on both teams can hurt us."
Michael Clarke is braced for the ODI battle.
