Jacques Kallis made his third successive ODI half-century, South Africa v Sri Lanka, 1st ODI, Paarl, January 11, 2012
This game will mean a lot to Jacques Kallis

Big Picture
If you thought India's away season had finally ended with the Asia Cup, then you are wrong. There's one more game, a Twenty20 against South Africa at the Wanderers, shoehorned into the tiny gap between the Asia Cup and the start of the IPL, which starts five days later. It's the sort of scheduling usually reserved for unofficial charity games. South Africa have just arrived from a full tour of New Zealand. When this game was announced officially earlier this month, the big question was not why not, but why.
Cricket South Africa has announced that this will be an annual affair, following last year's Twenty20 game between the two sides at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban. That match was Makhaya Ntini's farewell game. Tomorrow's match is dedicated to Jacques Kallis, and the proceeds will go to his scholarship foundation. The game might be for a noble cause, but is anybody aware that it is even happening? National newspapers in India have dedicated vast amounts of column space to the lead-up to the IPL. There's little mention that the national team has flown to the southern hemisphere again, to play a solitary match. The channel broadcasting the game in India have started a countdown to the game as a bid to aggressively market it in the middle of two ongoing international series.
Fans can be forgiven if they say they are fatigued, but MS Dhoni, the India captain, insists his team is not. It is his style to put a positive spin on everything, even when the ship is sinking. His team and the support-staff have clocked so many air miles in the last few months that they probably feel sick at the sight of airport lounges and hotel rooms. A one-off match with little context is the last thing they would have wanted.
South Africa have shown some compassion, resting their jet-lagged senior Test players (except Kallis and Lonwabo Tsotsobe). There's no rest for India's seniors, bar Sachin Tendulkar (though he doesn't play T20 internationals). Perhaps this could be seen as a last-ditch attempt to end a horrific season with a win. The IPL franchises have already vented their displeasure about the odd scheduling of this game because the India players are missing from the pre-tournament camps. The hosts are winding down their domestic season so this game hardly disrupts their plans.
A year down the line, if you forget this game took place, don't beat yourself up. In this era of "cricket excess", it's hard enough to remember a game which finished yesterday.

In the spotlight
When Richard Levi's name was called out at the IPL auction this year, it did not create a ripple. A blazing century off 45 balls (a record for Twenty20 internationals) in Hamilton made those franchises sit up. He was promptly signed up by Mumbai Indians. This will be most Indian fans' first chance to see him.
India's bowlers conceded 329 and 289 in their last two one-day internationals. Their generosity peaked in the match against Bangladesh, where they dished out full-tosses by the dozen. That malaise affected Australia recently. Praveen Kumar and Irfan Pathan have shown they can bowl swinging yorkers, though sporadically. Death bowling could be the difference for India.
Pitch and conditions
A batting track is expected. The altitude in Johannesburg, though, could test the India players.
Teams
The hosts seem to be approaching the game quite casually. The 13 players did not train, and the captain Johan Botha hadn't even met the coach Gary Kirsten the day before the game. There were rumours that the uncapped batsman Farhaan Behardian will play.
South Africa (probable) 1 Richard Levi, 2 Farhaan Behardian, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 Colin Ingram, 6 Albie Morkel, 7 Dane Vilas/Morne van Wyk (wk), 8 Johan Botha (capt), 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Rusty Theron, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe
India, for whatever logic, picked 15 players for a solitary match. There were no announcements from the India camp. Robin Uthappa, coming off good form for Karnataka in the domestic one-dayers, looks good for a recall. Manoj Tiwary has sat on the bench ever since he scored a one-day century in December. Will his wait end?
India (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Robin Uthappa, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Ashok Dinda
Stats and Trivia
  • India are returning to the venue where they played their first ever Twenty20. Albie Morkel is the only survivor for South Africa from that game.
  • India lead the head-to-head in Twenty20s by an overwhelming 4-1.
  • The Wanderers has the highest runs-per-over - 8.23 - among groundswhich have hosted a minimum of eight games. Quotes
"There are a lot of young players we are trying to groom, and hopefully it will pay dividends in the future. From our point of view there is a lot of talent around, we need to give them the exposure they require."
Duncan Fletcher, India's coach, says this game has value after all.
"With the World Twenty20 coming up in October, every T20 game is important and you can learn in every game."
Johan Botha says preparation for the World Twenty20 will be the focus in the one-off game.    [preview source:Cricinfo.com]

James Pattinson is back in Australia's line-up
March 27, Beausejour Cricket Ground
Start time 1400 (1800 GMT)
Big Picture
Two days on from the Australian victory that secured a drawn ODI series, the teams must adjust quickly with a Twenty20 series up for grabs. Little has changed in the Australia squad's personnel but the major difference is that George Bailey takes over the captaincy for the shortest format from Shane Watson, who was filling in for the injured Michael Clarke in the one-dayers. This will be Bailey's third match in charge and every game is vital, not only for itself but for Australia's plans ahead of the ICC World Twenty20, to be held in September. They have these two games and now, it appears, three Twenty20s against Pakistan in Sri Lanka in August to prepare.
West Indies are also in the preparation phase for the world tournament. They have not played a T20 international for five months and after these two games they are also likely to have three matches before the World T20 in Sri Lanka. West Indies have brought in some specialists for this version but having not played for some time, they must first evaluate their best side - seven of the men who played in their most recent T20 are not in this squad. But they have plenty of powerful hitters and will be a force to be reckoned with on the small Beausejour Cricket Ground.

Darren Sammyshowed in the fifth ODI the damage he can do at a ground with small boundaries like Beausejour. If he gets some time in the middle he could take the Australian attack apart again, but the likelihood is he could be batting as low as ninth in this West Indies line-up.James Pattinson has been sitting in the rooms throughout the one-day series, wondering when his chance would come. It has arrived in the first Twenty20 and as much as his bowling will be an asset to Australia in this game, he will also be keen for as much game time as possible ahead of the Tests, given he is almost certain to be part of Australia's starting line-up.
Team news
West Indies have named a 14-man squad but having not played a Twenty20 international for so long, their starting line-up is far from certain.
West Indies (possible) 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Carlton Baugh (wk), 8 Andre Russell, 9 Darren Sammy (capt), 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Fidel Edwards.
Australia have confirmed their starting line-up and there will be two changes from the side that played the final ODI. The fast bowler James Pattinson will play his first match of the tour and the allrounder Daniel Christian has also been included, while Peter Forrest and Ben Hilfenhaus have been left out.
Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Matthew Wade (wk), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 George Bailey (capt), 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty.
Pitch and conditions
The St Lucia pitch provided 280-plus first-innings scores in both the ODIs and there is no reason runs shouldn't flow in the first Twenty20 as well.
Stats and trivia
  • David Hussey will become Australia's most-capped Twenty20 international player in this game, surpassing Michael Clarke's record of 34 matches
  • There is no clear advantage at the toss: in the 11 T20 internationals held in St Lucia the team batting first has won five and lost six
  • Should Australia lose both of these matches, they could finish the tour ranked as low as eighth on the ICC's T20 international rankings
Quotes
"These matches will give us a gauge as to where we are. The belief is there. It was clear during the last two weeks. We are getting stronger."
Darren Sammy"It's a nice change for us to have a T20 group that has been together for a little while. Normally with T20 you get thrown together for a week and that's it, so to spent the last ten days together, albeit playing one-day cricket, is hopefully going to hold us in pretty good stead."

Australia vs West Indies ODI Series Review 2012

This was not how most people expected the series to play out. With one match remaining, West Indies cannot lose. The worst they can do is emerge with a 2-2 draw. Their best-case scenario is a 3-1 win, which would mean a lot to a side that has not beaten Australia in a one-day series since 1995. It would be especially pleasing for Darren Sammy if he was able to secure his first ODI home series win with a victory in his home country of St Lucia. And the way they played on Friday, it would be a brave person to tip against them in this final match.
Australia began the tour with a victory but at no stage in this series have they produced a strong all-round match. The bowling has let them down too often and none of their batsman have made a big enough score to set up a game. Under Shane Watson's leadership they arrived in the Caribbean fresh from a triumph in the tri-series but they struggled to adjust to the slow St Vincent pitch and were outplayed in the more familiar conditions of St Lucia on Friday. Eight men in the ODI squad will stay on for the Test series, so they will not wish to concede to West Indies the psychological advantage of a series win.

Player to Watch From West Indies:Kieron Pollard
Kieron Pollard has always had talent but in the past few months he has started to turn that into big international scores. His first ODI century came in December in India and his second was the match-winning 102 on Friday. He has power and confidence, and will be one of the men West Indies can thank if they win the series.
Player to Watch From Australia: David Warner

David Warner has had a couple of good starts in this series without posting a big score. He arrived in the Caribbean fresh from two centuries in the three tri-series finals against Sri Lanka but the St Vincent pitch was a challenge and he missed out early in Friday's game. But the quicker St Lucia surface should suit him, and Australia will be hoping he gets a start on Sunday and capitalises on it.
Possible Playing XI for West Indies:

West Indies (possible) 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Darren Sammy (capt), 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Kemar Roach.
Possible Playing XI for Australia:

Big Picture
Just how momentous is Bangladesh's passage to the Asia Cup final? Decide for yourself after reading these figures. In nine previous tournaments, Bangladesh had played 29 matches and won two, against Hong Kong and UAE. Out of three games this time, they have won two, against World Cup 2011 finalists India and Sri Lanka, and lost a close match to Pakistan.
For Bangladesh's tireless supporters, starved of success but never lacking in passion, this is like finding an oasis in a desert. A sea of the darker shade of green will be cheering every run that Bangladesh score tomorrow and every Pakistan wicket that falls. Victory won't be demanded, though; an appearance in the final is already a windfall for the fan.
How will the Bangladesh players approach this game, probably the biggest in their careers so far? Apart from blanking New Zealand some time ago at home, this is the first time they have put together consistently solid performances for three games running against world-class opposition. Will the fourth time prove to be too much? Will the pressure of a final, something they have hardly experienced, restrict the freedom with which they bat? Will their bowling and fielding be able to hold together?
Whatever be the result, Bangladesh's surge to the final holds the promise of another close match. They will fight; if they go down, they will still be heroes. If they win, they'll become part of folklore in the years to come. Either way, a bit of history has already been created.
While tomorrow's contest pales before the fervour an India-Pakistan final would have generated, Pakistan won't mind running into Bangladesh. They have relied on their bowling, as they often do, for getting them to the final. The one time their batting appeared to have almost won a game for them, they ran into Virat Kohli.
Pakistan have underperformed in the Asia Cup, winning it only once compared to the four titles each won by India and Sri Lanka. A second title beckons tomorrow, unless Bangladesh can ride on the passion and momentum and play beyond themselves again.

In the spotlight
Had Shakib Al Hasan been playing for some of the bigger Test sides, he would have been given a lot more respect than he gets at present. He averages 54.50 with the bat and 22.29 with the ball in ODI wins. He carries the expectations of Bangladesh fans lightly and, more often than not, puts in a telling contribution. He was Man of the Match in the hosts' wins over India and Sri Lanka and would have got the award against Pakistan had the Bangladesh lower order not collapsed around him. The hosts have found Nasir Hossain, but for the moment, as Shakib goes, so do Bangladesh.
Umar Gul helped Pakistan avoid defeat against Bangladesh with a three-wicket burst that included the wickets of Nasir and Shakib. One new ball or two, Gul has found reverse swing. When asked how he was getting such movement with a lush green outfield in Mirpur, he pointed to the dry-looking square. Bangladesh were able to survive the threat of Lasith Malinga on Tuesday. Gul will come hard at them tomorrow, especially after going for runs against India.
Team news
Nazmul Hossain took three wickets against Sri Lanka on his comeback in place of the injured Shafiul Islam. Bangladesh could go in with the same side that beat Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Nazimuddin, 3 Jahurul Islam, 4 Nasir Hossain, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Nazmul Hossain, 11 Shahadat Hossain
Pakistan played five bowlers against India, but Wahab Riaz, included in place of the specialist wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, went for 50 in four overs. Sarfraz is expected to return for the final, freeing Umar Akmal of the additional responsibility of keeping wicket.
Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Hammad Azam, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema
Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan have made the Asia Cup final for only the third time. They won their previous final (in Dhaka in 2000) by 39 runs. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have made their first final of a multi-nation tournament since reaching the final of the tri-series at home in 2009
  • If Bangladesh go on to win the final, they will become only the second team after Australia (in the 2003 World Cup) to beat India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in a single tournament
Quotes
"I was out of the country and having a holiday when these things were happening. It gave me some rest and mental freshness. I wanted to prove myself in the game after I came back. I worked hard and it's going alright."
With three half-centuries in three games, Tamim Iqbal has more than proved his point after having been left out of the original Asia Cup squad.[preview source:Cricinfo.com]

India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2012 Preview:
An year on since that epic World Cup semi-final in Mohali, India and Pakistan are set to face off again, having nailed in their tents this time at Mirpur – venue for their Asia Cup clash. But unlike their last battle – when it was a knockout for both the teams – it's a must-win match only for India as Pakistan have already booked a place in the final.
The euphoria of Sachin Tendulkar's hundredth century was snuffed out by Bangladesh on Friday, who chased down a 290-run target to inflict a five-wicket defeat on the visitors. That loss, which followed a victory over Sri Lanka, has put India in almost a knockout situation against Pakistan on Sunday.
AFP
Meanwhile, Pakistan go into the high-voltage clash with a clean chit, having beaten the hosts and the Lankans in their two previous matches. Those wins earned them a top spot in the points table, with a bonus point, and hence an entry into the final.Batting has never been a worry on the docile subcontinent tracks, as evidence by the totals of 304 and 289 achieved by the World Champions so far. Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and Tendulkar have a century each under their belt. And the success of top-order has allowed the likes of Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni up the ante at the death with wickets in hand.
However, the lower middle order hasn't had much of a hit. After being not required against Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja faced just 9 and 8 balls respectively against Bangladesh coming in to bat after the 45th over. So that should allow Rohit to keep his place in the top six.But conceding 85 runs in the last 10 overs against Bangladesh is a big worry for Dhoni. Irfan Pathan went for 61 in 9 overs and Ashok Dinda was plundered for 38 in his 5.2 overs. Praveen bowled well until the penultimate over of the chase, in which he leaked 13 runs to end up with a spell of 3 for 56.
So Dhoni must be weighing his options, which are far and few in this squad. The pressure that a Pakistan match brings with it also has to be considered, for you need skills and experience in equal measure against your archenemy. In that scenario, Vinay Kumar, who sat out on Friday with a niggle, could be the only change in the team. He should replace Dinda. Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin should remain the two spinners in the XI, with Irfan Pathan filling up as a bowling all-rounder.Pakistan, on the other hand, are sitting pretty – with a chance to try out youngsters before the big final. But given the enormity of a match against India, not many changes are expected in their XI as well.
Mohammad Hafeez, Naseer Jamshed, Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal have all scored a half-century each in the tournament so far. However, old guard Younis Khan has failed in both the matches so far. So Pakistan will be keen that their experienced No. 3 rises to the occasion and strikes form in this big clash. In bowling, Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema (five wickets each so far) have bowled well with the new ball and at the death. Their leading spinner Saeed Ajmal – who also has five wickets against his name - has been difficult to get away and will remain the biggest challenge for the in-form Indian batsmen. Shahid Afridi has been his fluent self with the leg-spinners but hasn't fired with the bat so far, having scored a nought against Bangladesh. Due for a cameo, he remains a threat for India.
So if anything, Pakistan may bring in Asad Shafiq in place of Hammad Azam as the only change in their XI from the last match against Sri Lanka. An Indian victory will not only take them virtually into the final but also shut the door on Sri Lanka, who have so far lost both their matches. But if India lose and then Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh, then all three will be on four points, leaving the net run rate to decide the second finalist.
Probable XI:
India: Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, R Ashwin, Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar.
Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Aizaz Cheema.

Big Picture
The last time West Indies beat Australia in an ODI, at the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy, Adam Gilchrist, Damien Martyn, Ricky Ponting, Andrew Symonds, Nathan Bracken and Glenn McGrath were among the names on Australia's team sheet. West Indies had almost as many players no longer in contention for spots, and it is poignant to note that the top scorer in Mumbai that day was Runako Morton, who was killed last week in a car accident in Trinidad. Since that time both sides have gone through an enormous amount of changes, though one thing has remained consistent - Australia have dominated West Indies, winning 13 of 14 matches, with one no-result, since.
So it is no surprise that most are expecting an improving Australia to enjoy themselves against Darren Sammy's hosts, and the visitors' coaches and selectors have expressed the view that their team should "win well" in the Caribbean. But Sammy and his players have been building recently, developing a team of more united intentions and greater work ethic than some of whom represented the region in the past. Sammy has shown himself to be a capable leader, while in Darren Bravo the team has perhaps the most compelling young batting talent in the world. Ravi Rampaul's bustling seam and swing will be missed. The hosts also have the advantage of slow, teasing conditions that Australia must adapt to, and Arnos Vale should provide a solid example of the surfaces expected throughout the tour.
Following on from a richly successful home summer, Australia's squad is a little thin for the moment, as injury has ruled out Ben Hilfenhaus and James Pattinson while Brad Haddin has caused contingency plans to be swung into action by withdrawing from the tour due to personal reasons. All these factors will present challenges for the acting captain Shane Watson, as he guides the team abroad for the first time.

 In the spotlight
Dwayne Bravois returning to the West Indies side for the first time since mid-2011, when he withdrew from the team in order to regain his focus. He has been handed the vice-captaincy, and is keen to make an impact as one of the few members of the team to have meaningful experience against Australia. "We have a very young team and, as one of the senior players, I have to step in and make my presence felt," Bravo said this week. "The fire is still blazing in me. I will be bringing the same level of enthusiasm and commitment that I always had. That is the only way I know how to play, by giving my all to the team."
Much has changed for Matthew Wade on match eve. Brad Haddin's return home to Australia for personal reasons leaves Wade to contemplate the possibility of his elevation to the Test team, while he also knows that for the time being he is the only qualified gloveman on the tour. Having made a highly promising start to his international career, demonstrating a fighting instinct as well as plenty of skill, Wade's position is growing in responsibility.
 Team news
Johnson Charles may debut at the top of the order, while the hosts must juggle a surfeit of allrounders with the possibility of a slow, turning surface.
West Indies (possible) 1 Kieran Powell, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Darren Sammy (capt), 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Kemar Roach.
With Ben Hilfenhaus and James Pattinson not yet fit to play and Brad Haddin flying home from the tour, the tourists' options are limited. George Bailey will debut, while Shane Watson is a chance to return to opening while Matthew Wade drops down the order.
Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson (capt), 3 Peter Forrest, 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 George Bailey, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Daniel Christian, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty.
 Pitch and conditions
Arnos Vale is known for producing a slowish pitch that can take turn, and early inspection of the surface by both sides suggested something similar for the series opener.
 Stats and trivia
  • West Indies have won two of three encounters against Australia at the Arnos Vale Ground, the first in 1995. But the visitors were victorious the last time the two teams met there, in 2008.
  • West Indies have not beaten Australia in an ODI for 14 matches, last doing so during the ICC Champions Trophy in India in 2006.
 Quotes
"An unknown opposition does present a lot more challenges. They can certainly hit you hard up front and we could be chasing our tails for the rest of the series."
Mickey Arthur on the challenge of facing some unfamiliar names in the West Indies team
"We're playing Australia but we're not going to play names, we're just going to go out there and play good positive cricket and hopefully we could come out on top. We've got to believe we have it."
Darren Sammy isn't worrying about the names on the Australian team sheet.[preview Source:Cricinfo.com]

Sachin Tendulkar 100th Hundreds Video Highlights 2012

Sachin-Tendulkar 100th century highlights 2012
Sachin Tendulkar has scored his 100th international century, in India’s Asia Cup ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur. The unprecedented landmark was achieved after 33 international innings without a hundred. It was Tendulkar’s 49th ODI century, his first against Bangladesh, to go with his 51 Test hundreds.

It was one of his slower hundreds, as he took 138 balls to reach the hundred. The hype around Tendulkar’s 100th international century began during last year’s World Cup, when two hundreds in the group stages put him on 99 international hundreds. However, he failed to get to three figures on India’s tour of England, the home series against West Indies and the tour of Australia, and has finally achieved the feat in Bangladesh.

Umar Gul celebrates Nasir Hossain's wicket as Shakib Al Hasan watches, Bangladesh v Pakistan, Asia Cup, Mirpur, March 11, 2012

Big Picture
The best and worst of Pakistan's unpredictability were on display against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup opener on Sunday. The batting was a rollercoaster ride from a high of 135 for 1, a low of 198 for 7 and a surge to 262 for 8. Pakistan then saw the opposition eyeing a win at 224 for 5, before Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal averted what would have been an embarrassing loss with a burst of 5 for 17. The game was Bangladesh's to lose, and they went ahead and lost it. Sri Lanka will not be so helpful to Pakistan.
Pakistan's ODI batting has recently been shaky against fast bowling even in Asia, one of the main reasons for their 0-4 whitewash against England in the UAE. On Sunday, the hard work done by Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed was undone by Pakistan losing three wickets - two of them to hooks off short deliveries - in three overs to Shahadat Hossain.
Their new-found ability under Misbah-ul-Haq to absorb blows and build steadily has worked superbly in Tests; ODIs on the subcontinent have unfortunately degenerated into hitting bouts decided by whose batsmen are more powerful. Back in conditions which their batsmen love, India outgunned Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Pakistan's batting looks thinner when compared to the two other Asian heavyweights, and they cannot depend on their bowlers to bail them out each time the batting misfires. Certainly not in these conditions.
Sri Lanka's worry is not that they lack the firepower in their batting; the issue at the moment is that it is unevenly distributed, with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene opening and Kumar Sangakkara coming in at No. 3. While Jayawardene, batting with much more freedom at the top, has earned the right to continue to open, Sri Lanka need one of their three senior batsmen to drop down the order to guide the inexperience of Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne. The case for that has become stronger with the exit of Angelo Mathews from the tournament.
Form guide
Pakistan WLLLL
Sri Lanka LLWLW
In the spotlight
Sri Lanka's fast bowlers allowed India to convert a good total into a challenging one with a variety of full tosses at the death and MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina plundered 78 runs in 43 balls. The bowlers kept going for the yorkers and more often than not, kept missing the blockhole. The short delivery wasn't tried much. Sri Lanka need an improved performance from them tomorrow; another loss in this short tournament could end their chances of making the final.
Mohammad Hafeez was the Man of the Match against Bangladesh for his 89 in an opening stand of 135 and two important wickets. Before that, the last time Hafeez made a fifty was also the last time Pakistan had had a century opening partnership, in November 2011. This shows how important Hafeez's contribution has become, and will be tomorrow, for this Pakistan side.
Pitch and conditions
Chasing is not proving to be that difficult in Bangladesh, though the results of the first two matches don't show it. MS Dhoni said on Tuesday that the Shere Bangla Stadium had been a difficult ground to defend against Sri Lanka with the fast outfield and some dew making batting second relatively easier. But with two sides now having lost after choosing to field, it will be a difficult choice at the toss tomorrow for the winning captain.
Teams
Mathews' departure from Bangladesh with a calf injury is a severe blow for Sri Lanka. They missed his calm head during the chase when wickets fell in a heap during the batting Powerplay. With Thisara Perera still uncertain, Sri Lanka's lower middle order does not inspire confidence.
Lasith Malinga's absence from the XI against India was a major talking point. Malinga bowled and batted in the nets today and should come in for Suranga Lakmal.
Sri Lanka (likely): 1 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Dinesh Chandimal, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Upul Tharanga, 7 Chamara Kapugedera, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Seekkuge Prasanna, 11 Lasith Malinga
Pakistan (likely): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Younis Khan 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema
Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan have beaten Sri Lanka 75 times in ODIs. Only Australia, with 85 wins over New Zealand, have more wins against a particular opponent
  • Shahid Afridi needs one more five-wicket haul to become the bowlerwith the most five-fors in ODIs in the subcontinent. Presently, he is level with Waqar Younis on seven five-wicket hauls
Quotes"[If] we win, we are more or less through. The preparation has been okay, a couple of days to lead up to the second match. We had an opportunity to look at the opponent yesterday."

Yusuf Pathan sends one out of Bangalore, India v Ireland, Group B, World Cup 2011, Bangalore, March 6, 2011
Will Yusuf Pathan make his comeback count?
Big Picture
Another ODI between India and Sri Lanka. Before you cringe in disgust, the mitigating factor in favour of the latest match is that it is not part of another hastily arranged bilateral series. The teams have no option but to meet once, at the least, in the Asia Cup.
One silver lining, if it can be called that, for India on the disaster that was their recent tour of Australia was their performance against Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Bank series, which culminated in that record chase led by Virat Kohli in Hobart. Out of four meetings between the two sides, India won two and tied another.
India know that will count for little; Hobart and Mirpur are two different worlds as far as conditions are concerned. For the record, they are the defending champions in this tournament. India go into this series with several questions to answer. Among them is the role and future of Sachin Tendulkar in the ODI side. At least the rotation policy at the top of the order that was employed in Australia has become dormant for the moment with no Virender Sehwag in the squad.
The middle order comes with its list of young batsmen with much to prove. Are Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma the men who will perform for India in the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand? Their presence in the squad shows that the selectors believe they will; the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, unfortunately, is not the place for them to prove they can.
In a way, India are in a cannot-win situation. If they do well in this tournament, it will be said that they are back to doing what they are best at - making merry on flat subcontinent pitches. If they do not, the talk will be that if they cannot do well even in these conditions …
Sri Lanka are in a much better position. This was not a statement you could have made before the CB series. What a difference the change of captain has made. Under Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka looked rudderless and stagnant. Under Mahela Jayawardene, they seem to have found their way again. What's more, Dilshan has rediscovered himself as a batsman too.
Jayawardene has said that his appointment is short-term and his immediate goal is to make Sri Lanka win again. He started well in the CB series with Sri Lanka narrowly losing out in the finals to Australia. Back in familiar conditions, and considering how rusty Pakistan and India have looked in ODIs recently, Sri Lanka will go in to the tournament as favourites.

In the spotlight
Ravindra Jadeja usurped the spinning allrounder's position from Yusuf Pathan last year. Yusuf then missed most of the domestic first-class season with an injury. He is now back in the squad in place of Sehwag. The jury is still out on which of the two players is better suited to the No. 7 position. While Jadeja is easily the better fielder and bowler, Yusuf is streets ahead in his ability to turn a game with his batting. Who will win this round of the fight for No. 7? The conditions might just work in favour of Yusuf.
The version of Lasith Malinga on show in the CB series was not the accurate stump-shattering one the world has come to know. It was surprising to see him send down so many full tosses as he consistently failed to get the yorkers on target. When he tried other lengths, he did not have the same venom. Malinga will be smarting from the way Kohli toyed with him in Hobart. Will the yorkers come out firing in Mirpur?
Pitch and conditions
There was some grass on the Mirpur pitch for the opening game between Bangladesh and Pakistan but it could not alter the usual slow nature of the surface much. The ball did come on to the bat better in the evening, but Misbah-ul-Haq said that was due to some dew. Bowling first in the subcontinent is usually not a popular option; it might not be a bad one in Mirpur.
Teams
Upul Tharanga was dropped and then returned way down the order in Australia with Jayawardene partnering Dilshan at the top. Tharanga responded with two half-centuries. How will Sri Lanka use him in the Asia Cup?
Sri Lanka: 1 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Upul Tharanga/Thisara Perera, 8 Seekkuge Prasanna, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Sachithra Senanayake
Will Manoj Tiwary finally get a game? How long will he have to wait for his chance? Will Tiwary's Bengal team-mate Ashok Dinda, who has had an outstanding domestic season, make the XI?
India: 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja/Yusuf Pathan 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 & 11 two out of Praveen Kumar/Vinay Kumar/Ashok Dinda
Stats and trivia

  • Since the beginning of 2008, India and Sri Lanka have faced off 38 times, nearly double the number of ODIs played between Australia and England, who have played 20 matches
  • India and Sri Lanka have played each other six times in Bangladesh with Sri Lanka winning on four occasions Quotes
"International cricket is such that you have to adapt very quickly mentally and physically, so no complaints."
Mahela Jayawardene knows he cannot do anything about a schedule that gives Sri Lanka four days between games in Adelaide and Mirpur

Matches: Bangladesh v Pakistan at Dhaka
Series/Tournaments: Asia Cup
Teams: Bangladesh | Pakistan

Big Picture
Bangladesh's and Pakistan's last meeting seems like it happened yesterday. Not too long ago, Pakistan toured the country, winning all games quite comfortably, before heading to the UAE. There's a chance they could face each other again shortly for another series of limited-overs games, in Pakistan, if the tour gets a go-ahead. Their meeting tomorrow is not a bilateral event, but a tournament which has been shoe-horned into an already cramped calendar. Seven games have been crammed into 12 days, with each team meeting the other once before the top two make the final. The flip side to such a format is that a poor start, or a surprise defeat could jeopardise a team's chances of qualifying.
The head-to-head record suggests that Pakistan are overwhelming favourites. That's what many would have predicted after they steamrolled England, the top Test side, 3-0 in the UAE. Yet, their 0-4 crash to the same team in the one-dayers confounded many, coming against a side which has traditionally under-performed in the shorter format.
Nevertheless, it was a wake-up call for Misbah-ul-Haq and the rest who took their foot off the pedal after the Test series. Perhaps they were homesick, or plain tired. In that sense, this Asia Cup assumes more context for Pakistan, who would want to sign off their season on a high, synonymous with their performance over the last year-and-a-half.
The Bangladesh players have been a busy bunch themselves. In a sense, the Asia Cup has been positioned aptly for the Bangladesh audience, who are just coming off the hangover of the Bangladesh Premier League. Whether the BPL will have a positive impact on Bangladesh's stature as an international team or not is a discussion for another day.
The tournament has given local players a chance to mingle with internationals. Despite that, the performances of some of the local players were underwhelming. There was also some off-field drama, with Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, calling the BPL a "disorganised" tournament. Despite some of the farcical behind-the-scenes action causing the organisers a lot of embarrassment, the Bangladesh fans appear to be in a feel-good wave and their enthusiasm will be crucial even in matches not involving their team.

In the spotlight
Mashrafe Mortaza has made several comebacks from injury. Tomorrow, he opens yet another chapter. A knee injury sidelined him from the 2011 World Cup. He returned for the Australia ODIs shortly after but hasn't played an international match since. He captained the Dhaka Gladiators to the BPL title, taking 10 wickets with a strike every 24 balls. His presence adds experience to the seam attack.
One of Pakistan's most consistent batsmen in the last year, Mohammad Hafeez, has suddenly slipped. In the ODI series against England, Hafeez managed just 61 from four games. Pakistan will need him to play a steady hand at the top of the order.
Pitch and conditions
The pitch at the Shere Bangla Stadium has a bit of grass, a deviation from the normally slow surfaces which have prompted captains to bring their spinners on from the second over.
Teams
All Bangladesh players are available for selection, but if the pitch continues to have that layer of grass, then the teams might be tempted to field an extra quick bowler. Bangladesh have recalled the batsman Jahurul Islam so there's a chance for him to stake a claim in the middle order.
Sarfraz Ahmed will make a comeback as Pakistan's wicketkeeper, after Adnan Akmal was left out.
Bangladesh (likely) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Mahmudullah, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt and wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Jahurul Islam, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Elias Sunny, 11 Shafiul Islam
Pakistan (likely) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Azhar Ali, 3 Younis Khan 4 Umar Akmal 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema
Stats and trivia

  • Shahid Afridi is just one run away from 7000 ODI runs
  • Bangladesh's first-ever one-day international was at the Asia Cupin 1986, incidentally, against Pakistan
  • Bangladesh have previously hosted two editions of the Asia Cup, in 1988-89 and 2000 Quotes"He's the main player with both ball and bat, so we are focussing on him, but it is a team of 11. Anybody can contribute, so also have to have to a plan against every player."

The Big Picture
Test cricket desperately needs a team to prove itself worthy of the much-hyped No. 1 ranking. A little competition at the top makes things interesting, but two top-ranked Test sides being whitewashed within seven months is downright farcical. Any sport requires a benchmark of excellence. South Africa are the team most capable of having an extended run at the top of the rankings: they, unlike England and India, perform well in all conditions, and had it not been for a strange inability to win a home series for three years they would already have been No. 1. They can get there by beating New Zealand 3-0 and should settle for nothing less.
A year ago, when New Zealand were in quite dismal form, a whitewash would have been the expected result. A month ago, with New Zealand riding on their upset of Australia in Hobart and thumping of Zimbabwe in Napier, one might have predicted a more even fight. Now, with South Africa having halted New Zealand's revival by wiping the floor with them in the one-dayers, but having suffered a shock loss against Sri Lanka in Durban last December, bold predictions would not be as forthcoming.
New Zealand face a dilemma when it comes to what types of tracks to prepare for the series. The success in Hobart came in seaming conditions, and South Africa have lost on fast bowlers' pitches, in Johannesburg and Durban, recently. But it would take a brave team to prepare a surface that would aid Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander. The Dunedin pitch has not a speck of green on it, with dried grass covering the pitch, which may make it get slower as the game goes on.
The idea might be to bring Daniel Vettori into the game, but Vettori has a poor record against South Africa, who play spin well. Batting tracks may not favour New Zealand either; their batsmen do not have the experience of their opponents in playing long innings and building mammoth totals.
Everything points to South African dominance, but it is both teams' ability to surprise, in contrasting fashion, that will keep the punters on edge.

 Watch out for...
There was a great amount of excitement surrounding Imran Tahir's debut because he was the first legspinner to play for South Africa since their readmission to international cricket. It's not been the smoothest of starts for him, though. He has struggled to trouble batsmen with his stock ball and his googly has been effective mainly against lower-order batsmen, who account for eight of his 14 Test scalps. New Zealand's batsmen are not as adept at playing spin as Tahir's previous opponents - Australia and Sri Lanka - and this could be the series that decides his future; if the quicks leave him much to do that is.
Martin Guptill has been in prime form of late but still needs to prove he can handle top opposition in Tests. His record against top teams is poor: an average of 24.76 with no centuries in 30 innings. South Africa will be the toughest opposition he has faced yet and he will need to learn when to leave the ball and defend in addition to playing his shots.
 Team news
Graeme Smith will lead South Africa despite soreness in his arm from a blow he took in the nets before the ODI series. Jacques Kallis pulled out of the third ODI due to back spasms but batted in the nets on Tuesday and is expected to play. Alviro Petersen, who joined the squad on Thursday, is set to open, with Jacques Rudolph batting at No. 6. Philander will come straight into the XI after his outstanding introduction to Test cricket, and Tahir is expected to be persisted with despite Marchant de Lange making a strong case for inclusion in the Test team.
South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 Jacques Rudolph, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir
New Zealand will have two debutants: opener Rob Nicol and wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk, who will play in place of the injured BJ Watling. Nicol will open with Guptill, with Brendon McCullum moving down to No. 3. There is a third uncapped player in the squad, allrounder Andrew Ellis, but with Ross Taylor keen on playing four quicks, he may not be picked. Daniel Vettori is likely to bat at No. 6 with Chris Martin, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell and Tim Southee forming the pace attack.
New Zealand: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Rob Nicol, 3 Brendon McCullum, 4 Ross Taylor (capt), 5 Kane Williamson, 6 Daniel Vettori, 7 Kruger van Wyk (wk), 8 Doug Bracewell, 9 Tim Southee, Trent Boult, 11 Chris Martin

Pitch and conditions
It is around 14C in Dunedin, which could make the South Africa players uncomfortable. There is also a chance of rain on the first day, with clear skies forecast for the next four. A brown pitch that may get slower suggests batting first would be the favoured option for both captains, which would be backed up by the high first-innings totals that have been scored in the three Tests at the University Oval. The last Plunket Shield match played at the ground, though, was a low-scoring game in which Auckland beat Otago after choosing to field.

Stats and trivia
  • Hashim Amla averages 104.80 against New Zealand after six Test innings against them
  • Of the last five matches between the two teams, four have been won by South Africa in less than four days

 Quotes
"I've been surprised that that's been the general talk but the guys [South Africa] have performed really well on the tour so naturally people are getting despondent."
Graeme Smith says he did not expect the New Zealand public to write off their own team before the series had started
"After the win in Hobart we've captured the imagination of the country and we want to try and build on that."
Ross Taylor says New Zealand can erase the memory of the 0-3 loss in the ODIs with a better performance in the Tests.[Preview Source:Cricinfo.com]
