Varun Aaron had reason to smile as he picked up three wickets on debut, India v England, 4th ODI, Mumbai, October 23, 2011
Varun Aaron's debut was another exciting part of the series for India

Matches: India v England at Kolkata
Series/Tournaments: England tour of India
Teams: England | India

Big Picture
England have a final chance to avoid a whitewash but the omens don't look good. India have overpowered them in all areas, relishing home conditions again after a difficult few months overseas. After the problems they faced in England this series has shown that India's 50-over game is in pretty reasonable health and it has given Duncan Fletcher another chance to look at a number of young players.
He'll have been impressed by what he has seen, too. R Ashwin has caused England no end of problems, Varun Aaron made an exciting debut, Ravindra Jadeja is a talented allrounder and Ajinkya Rahane has been a solid presence. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has led his stand superbly - out-captaining Alastair Cook by a street - and continues to defy his enormous workload.
For England it's a less rosy picture. The batting, apart from once in Mohali, has failed to adapt to conditions and having started the tour on a crest of a wave this has been a sudden jolt back down to earth. The management won't panic, they are wiser than that, but the last two weeks has gone to reinforce that some of England's one-day game is still lagging behind.

 In the spotlight
After a year where almost everything has gone right for Alastair Cook he's again a man under pressure. Not that his place is under threat but he has come in for some criticism on this short tour, both for his own tactics and the behaviour of his team. After making a promising 60 in the opening game the runs haven't flowed, either, which has meant England have struggled for solid starts, but it doesn't yet count as a slump. Cook isn't part of the Twenty20 side so this will be his final England outing until January and he'll be desperate to leave with something positive.
The crowds for this series have been disappointing with vast numbers of empty seats in traditional hot-beds such as Mumbai. Even in India, where one-day cricket is king, the signs are emerging of overkill. This is Eden Gardens' biggest match since early 2010 - they staged World Cup fixtures but their marquee game between these two teams was moved to Bangalore - and history shows that a full house here is one of cricket's most compelling sights. That, though, appears an unlikely prospect.
 Team news
There aren't many parts of India's game that haven't gone to plan, but Parthiv Patel hasn't had a productive series opening the batting and it could be a chance to give Manoj Tiwary an outing. Elsewhere, it would only be a question of whether anyone needs a rest.
India (possible): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Manoj Tiwary, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Vinay Kumar, 11 Varun Aaron
England shook up the bowling attack in Mumbai but it was the batting that let them down again. Ian Bell remains sat on the sidelines and must be wondering what he has to do to get a game. Ravi Bopara and Jonny Bairstow have both struggled in the series so Bell could replace either of them, or Craig Kieswetter if Bairstow was given the gloves. After a game off, Graeme Swann may replace Scott Borthwick before leading the T20 side at the weekend.
England (possible): 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Meaker, 11 Steven Finn.
 Pitch and conditions
Warm and sunny during the day, although perhaps not as hot as Mumbai, while dew hasn't been the major factor that it might have been during the series. For IPL matches the surface has tended to be slow and low. India would be quite happy with more of the same.
 Stats and trivia

  • This is England's first game in Kolkata since 2002 when India won by 22 runsdespite Marcus Trescothick's 121
  • England have only suffered two 5-0 series scorelines in ODIs; against Sri Lanka in 2006 and India in 2008
     Quotes
"There is always that balance, as we know, and part of our responsibility as a side is to get that. Sometimes on this tour, we might not have always got that balance - but I didn't see too much wrong this time."
Alastair Cook defends England's manner in the field
"We wanted to win 5-0 in England, but we couldn't. It's not always just what you want - you have to play well. We'll try to win it 5-0. But the main motivation is just to go out there and play good cricket."

Patrick Cummins celebrates after having JP Duminy caught at slip, South Africa v Australia, 1st ODI, Centurion, October 19, 2011
JP Duminy has been Pat Cummins' victim in three innings out of three

Analysis : We were a little bit rusty - Kallis
Features : Got a lot of years left in me - Johnson
Players/Officials: Jean-Paul Duminy | Mitchell Johnson
Matches: South Africa v Australia at Port Elizabeth
Series/Tournaments: Australia tour of South Africa
Teams: Australia | South Africa

Big Picture

Rain did not help, but South Africa were caught very much on the hop by Australia in the first ODI at Centurion. After Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke stood up to some strong early bowling in a manner that allowed Duckworth-Lewis to work heavily in the tourists' favour, Doug Bollinger, Mitchell Johnson, Pat Cummins and Xavier Doherty had their way with the ball against some indifferent batting in greasy conditions.
Having had a six-month break from international cricket, South Africa will be better for the run and will not be making too many changes to the team. However they must win at St George's Park in order to stay in the series, being played over a tightly-squeezed three fixtures much as the Test series was chopped back to two matches by the financial weight of the Champions League Twenty20.
Australia, by contrast, will simply want to keep up the impressive momentum built first in Sri Lanka then added to in Pretoria. Clarke is marshalling a unit that gathers confidence with each match, so much so that the visitors did not seem too badly off without the injured duo of Shaun Marsh and Shane Watson in the first match. Their returns would only strengthen a team that has also been enthused by the rapid progress of the teenagers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh.
 Form guide
South Africa: LLWWW
Australia: WLWLW In the spotlight
JP Duminy was commonly described as the next great international batsman after demonstrating enormous composure and neat technique in Australia in 2008-09. He has struggled to live up to that billing ever since, and so far in the T20s and first ODI has found himself dismissed each time by the rampant young Cummins, whose speed and bounce has twice found an outside edge to the slips. As a link between the hard-bitten top three of Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis, and the inexperience of David Miller and Faf du Plessis, Duminy must do more. The sight of Mitchell Johnson swinging the new ball would have brought the odd curse from the South African dressing room at Centurion, as it suggests he can be as much a threat this time around as he was in 2009. Johnson likes to build his confidence with plenty of overs and wickets, which in turn may help to re-ignite a batting talent that has sat largely dormant in recent matches. The only possible criticism of Johnson in the first match was that he did not bowl enough deliveries of full length when he was swinging them, probing for the early bowled or lbw that he managed so often two and a half years ago.
 Pitch and conditions
Port Elizabeth can have plenty of runs in it while also providing some incentives for bowlers. Breezy and mild weather is forecast and there is little prospect of the rain that so disrupted proceedings in Pretoria. Team news
South Africa will again deliberate over the possible inclusion of the legspinner Imran Tahir. It is the only change the hosts may make after the selectors chose to release Robin Peterson and Wayne Parnell for domestic duties.South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Hashim Amla (capt), 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Jean-Paul Duminy, 5 David Miller, 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Johan Botha, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh are back in training after minor injuries but the tourists may elect to ease the duo in one at a time, with Steve Smith the man most likely to make way.
Australia (probable) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 David Warner, 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Doug Bollinger.
 Stats & trivia

  • An Australian victory would hand the tourists a limited overs series victory in South Africa for the third time, but the first since 2002. The Proteas won series in 2006 and 2009.
  • The first ODI between these sides at St George's Park in 1994 saw a memorable cameo by Allan Border, who blazed 40 from 17 balls including three sixes on his final international tour. Australia's total was 281 for 6, considered an enormous tally at the time, and South Africa never got close.
 Quotes
"St George's Park generally offers the spinners something, but if you hit the wicket hard enough there is something in it for the seamers. So whether you play two spinners or one spinner it's not going to make a massive difference."
Russell Domingo, South Africa's assistant coach, on the conditions at the ground where he made his name as a coach for the Warriors franchise
"We're here to win all three one-day games so our mindset is very clear. We're very focussed on the job at hand. We want to win the game, we'll worry about what that means later."

MS Dhoni insists this series is not about revenge  AFP
Matches: India v England at Mumbai
Series/Tournaments: England tour of India
Teams: England | India

Big Picture
The phrase 'to play for pride' is grossly overused, usually to lend a dead rubber some importance. But such has been the nature of the battle between India and England over the past few months that the sentiment may actually have some credence going in to the fourth ODI in Mumbai. MS Dhoni may not likethe word "revenge" but surely he wouldn't mind "redemption" being used to describe India's performance at the end of the series. The magnitude of their failure in England means a simple series-win may not be enough to grant it. The fans want an emphatic scoreline.
There could hardly be a better place for India to underline their recovery from the disastrous summer tour. Though it seems like it has been an eternity since, it was only six-and-a-half months ago that Mumbai witnessed one of India's biggest wins.
But England have had a couple of special moments in ODIs at the Wankhede Stadium too: back in 1987 they beat India to go through to the World Cup final, and in 2002, Andrew Flintoff famously ripped his shirt off and did a victory-lap around the ground after bowling England to a series-levelling five-run win.
Since then England have lost 13 of 14 completed one-day internationals in bilateral series in India, and the frustration is beginning to show in the body-language of their players. There have been a few verbal confrontations between the players during this series, and Tim Bresnan was fined for snatching his cap from the umpire in the third ODI. Andy Flower, the England team director, has defended his team's attitude but will know a win is the only tonic for some hurt egos.
In order to achieve that, though, England need to accept certain realities of playing India in India, the first of which is that scores of 300, while winning totals in other countries, are often just par for the course on Indian pitches. After the Mohali ODI, Alastair Cook, the England captain, said their score of 298 was defendable, a statement made mainly to justify Jonathan Trott's innings of 98 not out from 116 balls, considered too slow by some. Cook would do well to listen to what Kumar Sangakkara, a man who knows all about playing against India in their home conditions, said after the World Cup final: "Anything less than 350 is not safe against India."
Aiming higher does not necessarily mean having to drop Trott, but it does mean that pretty much no-one else can afford to score at less than a run-a-ball. A series strike-rate of 84.31 from someone like Craig Kieswetter, in the side to provide rapid starts, simply won't cut it.

In the spotlight
In the absence of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan is the leader of England's seam attack, but he's been their most-expensive bowler in the series so far, going at 6.94 in his 24.2 overs. He's got the variations to be successful in the subcontinent and may want to look back to the tied gameagainst India during the World Cup to figure out what to do right. In that match, Bresnan was the only bowler who shone on a batsman's night, and took 5 for 48 in his 10 overs.
When Vinay Kumar said, at the start of the series, that he would be guiding the younger bowlers during this series, it seemed ironic, given that Vinay had only played six ODIs himself. After taking five wickets in three games, including a four-wicket haul in Delhi, he has indeed proved to be India's spearhead. In Mohali, he was found out in the end overs, when Samit Patel read his short balls and slower ones easily. Vinay will want to prove he can be effective at both ends of an innings.
Pitch and conditions
Mumbai sees an unusual heat wave arrive every October, and the England players are going to find it extremely uncomfortable. This is not a welcome, sunny, sunbathe in Hyde Park sort of heat. It's muggy, stifling and you are likely to perspire a river by the time you've walked from the team bus to the ground. "Mumbai is a bit hot and humid, rehydration will be the key; batsman or bowler, everyone will be tested; no more runners in cricket," MS Dhoni tweeted during India's practice session on Saturday. The England players may not have the energy to type a sentence that long by the time Sunday is over.
The pitch will be a slow turner, according to Sudhir Naik, the Wankhede curator and former India opening batsman. "It will be slower than what was prepared for the World Cup final," he told the Times of India. "It will be a dry wicket."
Team news
Umesh Yadav injured his handwhile fielding in the Mohali ODI and has been replaced in the squad by Abhimanyu Mithun. That means young fast bowler Varun Aaron, who has been waiting for his chance since the England tour, could make an international debut. Dhoni said India may give other players in the squad a chance so long as it doesn't affect the balance. The uncapped legspinner Rahul Sharma for R Ashwin would be a straight swap.
India (probable): 1 Parthiv Patel, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin/Rahul Sharma, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Vinay Kumar, 11 Varun Aaron
After the Mohali ODI, the Indian Express carried a headline that read 'Bell makes some noise, but will the door open?' Even more absurd than that title is the fact that the door has stayed shut on Ian Bell, perhaps England's most naturally talented stroke-maker. Andy Flower said there would be changes in Mumbai, and surely Bell will find a place. Jonny Bairstow may be the man to make way after Samit Patel did well as a lower-order hitter in Mohali.
Graham Onions has joined the England squad as a replacement for the injured Chris Woakes, and either he or the uncapped Stuart Meaker could replace Jade Dernbach, who has gone at 6.54 through the series and looked frustrated on the field. Scott Borthwick, the 21-year-old legspinner who took five wickets in a practice match against a Hyderabad XI, may be given an international debut.
England (probable): 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Steven Finn, 11 Stuart Meaker
Stats and trivia

  • In Mohali, India scored 300 for the 65th time in ODIs, going past Australia's 64 to be the side with the most number of totals of 300 or more. This, after India were the last of the major teams to go past 300 in an ODI.
  • Virat Kohli has gone past 1000 one-day runs for 2011 in this series. Last year, he managed 995 runs.
  • India have won nine of the last 10 matches they have chased in.
Quotes
"I have been a ball boy twice - during an India-Australia match and a game against South Africa. Both times I was near the dressing room and I was always excited to see the Indian players. I always wanted to be in there one day, and now I will do that."
Local lad Ajinkya Rahane has a unique association with the Wankhede Stadium
"As far as talent is concerned, they are very good. But they need to stick together - that's one thing that's very important, especially when the team doesn't get the desired result."
MS Dhoni has some advice for England
"Yes, there is a difference between passion and poor conduct and, on almost all occasions, I think our guys are excellent at finding that balance."
Andy Flower, the England team director, believes his team's on-field behaviour has not been out of line.[ preview:via Cricinfo]

There were plenty of words between Virat Kohli and the England bowlers, India v England, 2nd ODI, Delhi, October 17 2011
There was plenty of needle between England and India in Delhi, but the final result was a trouncing for the visitors
      India v England at Mohali

Big Picture
As Rudyard Kipling once put it: "East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." The contemptuous dominance that England enjoyed in their home Test series against India is now being reprised in reverse in their one-day tour against the same opponents.
England's opening two ODIs in Hyderabad and Delhi resulted in two crushing defeats, and unless they can stop the rot at the third time of asking in Mohali, they will have squandered the series with two games to play. It's hard to envisage any such transformation taking place, however. With one victory in their last 15 ODIs in India - and none since April 2006 - England have been in this position before, and have yet to work out an escape route.
India are a much-changed team from the outfit that won the World Cup back in April, but in their first home campaign since that momentous achievement, they have tapped into the same well of confidence. England faced trial by spin in the first game, and trial by seam in the second, and while their batsmen faltered on each occasion, India's have gone from strength to strength.
From MS Dhoni's blistering assault in the final 16 overs of the first match, to Virat Kohli's crushing double-century partnership with Gautam Gambhir in the second, the defining feature of India's performances to date has been the fluidity of their run-scoring. Whereas England's innings have been staccato at best, with occasional boundary shots punctuated by long periods of failed strike rotation, India's ability to create gaps in the field has been nigh on impossible to match, and even harder to stop.
In that regard, the absence of Eoin Morgan has been critical for England. His nominal replacement, Jonny Bairstow, hits a long ball given half a chance, as demonstrated on debut at Cardiff last month, but he has yet to learn the versatility required to dominate on Indian pitches. He's not alone in that regard. Craig Kieswetter has managed one boundary and seven runs in 13 balls so far, and while Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott have looked at ease in the conditions when they've got in, neither man has been able to put pedal to metal in the manner of their India counterparts.
England's problems extend to their bowling attack as well. Steven Finn and Tim Bresnan have impressed in an individual capacity, even though their figures hardly reflect their efforts, but Jade Dernbach's variations have been collared, while Samit Patel has struggled as a spin-bowling allrounder. Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and even Kohli's leg-rollers have all proven more effective. It will take a considerable swing in fortunes for England to prove greater than the sum of India's parts in the coming contests.

In the spotlight
There was no love lost between England's bowlers and Virat Kohli in Delhi, but seeing as he butchered them with a sublime 89-ball hundred, there was only one winner of that particular skirmish. Whatever technical suspicions were aired on the England tour, they were nowhere to be seen as he filleted the gaps in the field with aplomb, and he further confirmed his prowess on home soil with five nagging overs of unhittable medium pace. At the age of 22, he is seizing his chance to become the flag-bearer of India's new generation.
Jade Dernbach is a remarkable bowler for England to have in their ranks - a genuinely innovative seamer with an arsenal of variation to call upon, and time on his side to fine-tune his repertoire. When he gets it right, as he did with a looping slower ball to pin Gautam Gambhir lbw in Hyderabad, he can bamboozle the best players; however, when his variations are clocked, the joke is invariably on him - and so far in this campaign, he has one wicket at 99.00 in 16 overs. As Shane Warne once said of young legspin bowlers, he needs a lot of love to build the confidence upon which his skills will be pinned, but he's not getting it on this most torrid of tours to date.
Pitch and conditions Ind vs Eng 3rd ODI 2011
One of the most northerly venues in India, the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium has traditionally offered something to the seamers, although on the evidence of the second ODI, it is India's pairing of Praveen Kumar and Vinay Kumar who are better placed to exploit whatever is on offer.
Team news
No change was necessary the hosts in Delhi despite the conditions being markedly different, and so more of the same can be expected in Mohali. It makes quite a contrast to the recent tour of England, on which casualties abounded.
India squad for 3rd ODI vs England 2011  (probable): 1 Parthiv Patel, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Vinay Kumar, 11 Umesh Yadav
Patel's place is under scrutiny following two poor bowling performances in the opening two games. Chris Woakes, one of his likelier replacements, has been ruled out of the tour through injury. His replacement is Graham Onions, although the legspinner Scott Borthwick is arguably first in line for a call-up. Despite being at 30s and 40s in Delhi, England may yet resist the temptation to tinker with the batting, with Ian Bell once again set to wait his turn.
England squad 3rd ODI vs India 2011(probable): 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Scott Borthwick, 10 Steven Finn, 11 Jade Dernbach
Stats and trivia

  • India have a chequered history in ODIs at Mohali - they have won six and lost four of their ten games at the venue since 1993.
  • However, Mohali retains a significant place in the nation's affections, given the result of the last game it hosted in March 2011: the victorious World Cup semi-final against Pakistan.
Quotes

Graeme Smith swishes his bat after chipping a catch back to David Hussey, South Africa v Australia, 2nd Twenty20, Johannesburg, October 16 2011

Big Picture

Australia and South Africa have shared a theme of all change since both endured earlier World Cup exits than they had bargained for. Had the two teams faced each other in that tournament, it would have been with different captains, different coaches and arguably different approaches to the contest. In each case there is now also an element of the incomplete transition. Australia are touring with an interim coach, Troy Cooley, while Cricket Australia casts its net widely for a new man to fill the role. South Africa will be led by a stand-in captain in Hashim Amla while AB de Villiers continues his recovery from a broken finger.
A point of contrast between the two sides is the cricket they have played since the World Cup. South Africa have enjoyed an extended break from the game, allowing the new coach Gary Kirsten to settle into his position after leaving India at the conclusion of the World Cup. Though Australia also had a break after the cup, it was interspersed with a brief visit to Bangladesh where the visitors claimed a 3-0 sweep, then a successful tour of Sri Lanka where both the ODI and Test series were won by Michael Clarke's men.
Now Australia have the benefit of a deep and fully fit battery of fast bowlers, with the teenager Pat Cummins a most enticing new addition. South Africa must find the correct balance under Kirsten and Amla, though in Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Jacques Kallis and Amla himself there is one of the most accomplished senior groups in world cricket.

 In the spotlight
Graeme Smith stepped down from the Twenty20 and ODI captaincy following the World Cup defeat, and for all his successes in Test cricket he had been unable to shake the unwanted "choking" tag from the team at major tournaments. A duck and 24 in the two T20 matches was not an outstanding return, and Smith will need to be at his best against an Australian attack that is clearly enjoying the pace and bounce on offer in South Africa after the trials of Sri Lanka's numerous unforgiving batting surfaces.
Michael Clarke showed tremendous poise and natural flair for captaincy on his first full tour in charge, but has acknowledged that the challenge will be far greater in South Africa. Added to his list of tasks on this trip is to hold together a highly transitional tour unit, with an interim coach and temporary selection panel, against opponents perfectly happy to exploit any weakness they can find. Clarke is also an exceptional player of spin but has been challenged by pace in the past, notably against England last summer. Steyn will be particularly keen to get at him.
 Pitch and conditions
Centurion's surface has generally offered plenty of runs to batsmen, though there is also the possibility of bounce, movement and wickets for bowlers prepared to bend their backs. This may be even truer with a new ball being taken at each end as per the new ICC playing conditions.
 Team news
South Africa's major selection doubt surrounds the place of the legspinner Imran Tahir, who excelled during the World Cup. He may take the place of Morne Morkel or Lonwabo Tsotsobe, though rain in the region may encourage the selection of three quicks.
South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Hashim Amla (capt), 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Jean-Paul Duminy, 5 David Miller, 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Johan Botha, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
Shane Watson's hip complaint is expected to keep him out of the first ODI at least, presenting a chance for David Warner at the top of the order. The loss of Watson's allround skills should also provide an opening for Mitchell Marsh, while Pat Cummins may shade James Pattinson to earn an ODI debut following his T20 success.
Australia (probable) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 David Warner, 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Doug Bollinger.
 Stats & Trivia

  • Australia have won seven of 11 matches at Centurion, and the venue provided an important stepping stone to success in the 2003 World Cup and the 2009 Champions Trophy. However the record against South Africa is a little more balanced at 3-2 in favour of the hosts.
  • South Africa can draw all but level with Australia on the ICC ODI rankings with a 3-0 series sweep. The top-ranked Australians presently have a 14-point advantage over the Proteas.
 Quotes
"Having lost AB is massive, You cant replace a guy like AB overnight, that comes over years. It's a big loss for SA cricket, our middle order and batting all in all. There is probably pressure on the middle order but injuries are part of the game nowadays."
Mark Boucher on the absence of AB de Villiers
"There's definitely still a chance. We won't pick our team until tomorrow morning. If they are not, it's important to make a smart decision.."
Michael Clarke on Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh's injuries.[Via Cricinfo]

Graeme Smith puts together a big third-wicket partnership with AB de Villiers, South Africa v West Indies, World Cup, Group B, Delhi, February 24, 2011
Graeme Smith is 42 runs shy of 1000 Twenty20 international runs

Big Picture
South Africa were rusty in the first game, which was to be expected after such a long lay-off. They missed chances in the field and, JP Duminy aside, didn't hit their straps with the bat. But on a better batting pitch in Johannesburg, they will be able to use the pace from Australia's fast men and feel the ball coming off the bat. Hashim Amla now has a match under his belt as the country's captain and he will lead with more confidence at the Wanderers. The key for the hosts is to produce a more consistent performance - Duminy, Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe played well in the series opener, but they cannot be expected to carry the side.
For Cameron White's Australia, this match presents a rare chance to win a Twenty20 series. Flying in to a country for one or two Twenty20s and then heading home could become a familiar feeling for White, who is not part of the ODI squad, and it would do his confidence a world of good to depart with a 2-0 result. Shane Watson has been told by Michael Clarke not to expect a rest any time soon, even if he feels tired after his Sri Lanka tour and Champions League commitments. Watson is not the type of player who would want a break in any case. His strong half-century in Cape Town showed the kind of form he is in, and if he and David Warner make a good start, Australia will be hard to beat.
Form guide
South Africa LLWWW
AustraliaWLLWL
In the spotlight
South Africa's batting in the first match was built around JP Duminy, who played himself in and then started finding the middle of the bat. He enjoys playing against Australia and will again be a key man at the Wanderers.
David Warner finished the Champions League T20 with a pair of centuries but viewers didn't get to enjoy his fireworks in Cape Town, where he was run out in the first over. If Warner spends a few overs at the crease in Johannesburg, expect plenty of balls to fly into the crowd.
Team news
Rusty Theron was a weak link in South Africa's attack and could be under pressure from Wayne Parnell. Graeme Smith was rusty in the first game and would benefit from another outing. Richard Levi has a strong case to be included, and it could be at the expense of David Miller.
South Africa (possible) 1 Hashim Amla (capt), 2 Graeme Smith, 3 JP Duminy, 4 Colin Ingram, 5 Richard Levi/David Miller, 6 Heino Kuhn (wk), 7 Johan Botha, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Rusty Theron/Wayne Parnell, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
The spinner Steve O'Keefe was given only one over in the first game, with David Hussey effectively acting as the lead spinner. That could mean the selectors will consider leaving O'Keefe out in Johannesburg, especially with a harder pitch on offer, and handing a debut to Mitchell Marsh, a powerful batsman who can also offer another seam-bowling option.
Australia (possible): 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 David Hussey, 5 Cameron White (capt), 6 Steven Smith, 7 Mitchell Marsh, 8 Matthew Wade (wk), 9 James Pattinson, 10 Patrick Cummins, 11 Doug Bollinger.
Pitch and conditions
The Wanderers surface is expected to be hard and bouncy, with plenty of runs available for the batsmen. The seamers are likely to find more assistance than the spinners. The forecast is for a sunny day and a top of 27C.
Stats and trivia
  • South Africa and Australia have met in seven Twenty20 internationals. Thursday's win by Australia was the first victory in those seven games by the away team.
  • Graeme Smith needs 42 runs to become the third man to reach 1000 runs in Twenty20 internationals, after Brendon McCullum and Kevin Pietersen.
Quotes
"If we can improve 5-10% every game, we are heading in the right direction."
South Africa batsman JP Duminy

Charles Coventry misses an attempted pull off Brett Lee, Australia v Zimbabwe, Group A, World Cup 2011, Ahmedabad, February 21, 2011
Zimbabwe will hope Charles Coventry puts his career T20I strike rate of 193.33 to good effect

The Big Picture
The last time a full New Zealand outfit toured Zimbabwe, the trial of Saddam Hussein had yet to begin, the Live 8 concerts had just taken place and Stuart Carlisle was still an international batsman. Carlisle is now long gone, but Iraq is still war-torn. Much has changed in Zimbabwe since New Zealand's last visit, but plenty has stayed the same too, and though New Zealand will start their tour as favourites their opponents are now much better equipped to provide a challenge.
Or are they? Twenty20 cricket remains, largely, a domestic game but the format's unique skill set has filtered through to international level for many national teams. Zimbabwe isn't one of them. Pakistan have played 48 Twenty20 Internationals, Australia 44. New Zealand are just behind them, with 43. Zimbabwe have only played 16, winning three of those, and, such is the pace at which the game is moving on these days, they're in danger of being left behind.
Zimbabwe's domestic T20 tournament, with its international imports and glossy marketing, has, no doubt, helped, but they will not develop as a T20 team playing two weeks of the stuff a year. Indeed, in the previous 12 months they've only played four T20Is, and their results have reflected their lack of experience. They showed considerable pluck in pushing South Africa close in an eight-run loss in Kimberley this time last year, but were shown up horribly by Pakistan in the first game of their two-match T20I series before losing the second in hugely anti-climactic circumstances.
Zimbabwe's naivety in the format will not have escaped the attention of a team as street-smart and cunning as New Zealand. The pugnacious visitors have become hardened over the years by the blows dished out by the big boys - particularly their neighbours across the Tasman Sea. They have, in Ross Taylor, a captain raised in the era of T20 cricket, with a bruising batting technique to match and plenty to prove. Though New Zealand haven't played any international cricket since the World Cup, several members of their squad have plied their trade around the world in the interim. New Zealand will want to show, as Pakistan did last month, that they are a cut above the Zimbabweans,
The focus of this tour will, of course, be the one-off Test match but the opening pair of T20Is will provide a handy opportunity for each team to analyse the character of the other. New Zealand's shambolic performance in Bangladesh this time last year will give the Zimbabweans hope, but the visitors will expect nothing less than two outright wins.
 Form guide

New Zealand LWWLW
 Watch out for...
Charles Coventry remains an enigma. In possession of a repertoire of shots that allows him to match any young shot-maker in the game, he remains strangely vulnerable and inconsistent. But boring, he most certainly isn't, and Zimbabwe will be hoping he sticks around long enough to put his career T20I strike rate of 193.33 to good effect.
With 1,638 runs and 43 wickets to his name in T20s, James Franklin adds a weight of experience to New Zealand's line-up with his all-round skills. Franklin, who is approaching his 31st birthday, has gone through a couple of incarnations in his stop-start international career, and the latest version is very well suited to the demands of the game's shortest format.
 Pitch and conditions
Zimbabwe is usually baking hot and dry in October, but it's been a strangely cool, damp couple of weeks and it remains to be seen what effect this might have had on the preparation of the pitch at Harare Sports Club. No domestic cricket has been played at the ground since the season began in late September, but the recent matches against Pakistan provided a balanced battle between bat and ball. There is still some rain about but Saturday should be sunny and dry.
 Team news
Zimbabwe have suggested they'll play an extra batsman in these matches, but they won't want to weaken their bowling resources too much and Prosper Utseya could be the man to miss out on a pitch that should have more in it for the seamers than the spinners.
Zimbabwe (probable) 1 Chamu Chibhabha, 2 Vusi Sibanda, 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Brendan Taylor (capt), 5 Tatenda Taibu (wk), 6 Charles Coventry, 7 Malcolm Waller, 8 Keegan Meth, 9 Ray Price, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Chris Mpofu
New Zealand have several quality allrounders that will give them options with both bat and ball, while a top order that includes Jesse Ryder, Brendon McCullum and Taylor will be hard to keep quiet. Jacob Oram and Nathan McCullum will provide the batting firepower down the order, while Kyle Mills and Andy McKay will probably share the new ball.
New Zealand (probable) 1 Jesse Ryder, 2 Brendon McCullum (wk), 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Ross Taylor (capt), 6 James Franklin, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Luke Woodcock, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Andy McKay
 Stats and trivia

  • Brendon McCullum is New Zealand's leading runscorer in T20Is, with 1,100 runs. His brother Nathan is their second-highest wicket taker, with 26 scalps.
  • The teams have only met once before in a T20I, New Zealand winning a damp washout of a game at the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean last year by seven runs on Duckworth/Lewis.
  • Hamilton Masakadza and Elton Chigumbura are the only two players to have taken part in all 16 of Zimbabwe's T20Is, and Masakadza is their leading run-scorer with 426 runs to his name.
  • Zimbabwe have not won a T20I since their match against West Indies at Port of Spain in February 2010.
 Quotes
"The big difference between the two teams is experience; New Zealand are an experienced group that has been playing together for a long time, yet our team is only just starting to play together and emerging."
Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton believes New Zealand's greater experience will stand them in good stead in Zimbabwe[via Cricinfo]

Tamim Iqbal got a steady 62, Bangladesh v Australia, 1st ODI, Mirpur, April 9, 2011
Bangladesh will need Tamim Iqbal back at his fluent best

Big Picture

In a short series, the opportunities for comebacks are limited, and the pressure's on Bangladesh to turn things around quickly to give themselves a chance of upsetting West Indies. They could have made a closer contest of the first ODI on an excellent pitch for batting but their batsmen, with the exception of Shakib Al Hasan, struggled to get a move on. In a chase of 299, the hosts finished with 258 for 7, with six of the top seven getting starts. Only one among them threatened to put any pressure on West Indies, undermining what is otherwise a competitive score.
Not the usual slow and low fare, the pitch gave the West Indies batsmen an opening to take charge and they did. Bangladesh's army of spinners were caught by surprise and in conditions that didn't help them much, they were tamed. At the same venue on Saturday, the hosts need their bowlers to adapt quickly and their batsmen to show more intent to entertain any hopes of matching their opponents.
 Form guide
Bangladesh: LWWLL
West Indies: WWWLL
 Spotlight
Andre Russell: Russell won many admirers during the World Cup with his all-round skills and is a handy man to have at No.7. Apart from his big-hitting skills, he can be a wily bowler with his changes of pace and has had impressive results thus far. The more limited-overs cricket he plays, the more opportunities he gets to showcase his skills to those hawks at the IPL who'll have a keen eye on his progress.
Tamim Iqbal: He produced an uncharacteristic innings in the previous game when his side needed an attacking opening. One of his team's best stroke-makers, Tamim will be expected to deliver on a good pitch and bat big, an ability he's shown in the past in both Tests and ODIs.
 Team news
Darren Sammy missed the first ODI due to an upset stomach. He should return, and replace Danza Hyatt. Adrian Barath retired hurt after injuring his hamstring, and it remains to be seen if he's fit.
West Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Adrian Barath/Kieran Powell, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Devendra Bishoo, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Kemar Roach.
Will Bangladesh stick with Mohammad Ashraful? He fell cheaply on a day most batsmen got starts, a result that will only heighten the scrutiny over his place in the side.
Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Mohammad Ashraful/Shahriar Nafees, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt and wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Naeem Islam, 7 Alok Kapali, 8 Nasir Hossain, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel Hossain.
 Stats & Trivia

  • Spinners have taken 333 out of the 695 wickets at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. That's almost half - no wonder Mushfiqur Rahim was surprised the pitch took no turn.
  • Mohammad Ashraful hasn't scored a half-century in his last 17 innings - his highest in those innings is 31.
 Quotes
"I think we are all confident. On Thursday we lost by 40 runs but there's a lot of positives to take from the game. We were chasing a big score and we always were in with a chance."

India v England, October 14, Hyderabad

Big Picture
India's winless tour of England has not been without what initially seemed like positives. At least the admen had moved on from the Lagaantheme that has been the easiest way to sell an India-England series in India. Except that colonial references have now made way for war ones. "There's no weapon deadlier than vengeance," says one in all caps. "India takes on England. The war resumes this October."
To give the marketing machinery generous benefit of doubt, India and England haven't exactly offered them much by the way of close series. India last beat England in England in September 2007. The corresponding date for England in India is April 2006. India have whitewashed only two Test series (longer than two matches); one of those victims was England. Four out of their seven whitewashes (in series longer than two matches) have been handed by England; the last one earlier this year now invokes the deadly weapon of vengeance.
Except that this is no revenge series. For one of your three worst tours of all time, including the 4-0 Test whitewash for the then No. 1 side, is not avenged over five ODIs. It will, however, be an opportunity to know what a win feels like. India last enjoyed that feeling in June in the West Indies. It will be an opportunity to arrest a slide, stack up some victories and regain confidence before they leave for Australia, their next really big assignment. It won't be easy, though, playing as they are without Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel. Given their schedules, though, they better get used to this, at least in limited-overs formats.
It will be an opportunity for their opponents to set a record right. That they have won only one of their last 13 completed ODIs against India in India is enough to justify England's remarkably early arrival and long preparation. Most of those defeats suggest the lack of the power game required in the subcontinent, which along with Test series wins in India and Sri Lanka stands in England's way of their aim of all-round domination.
England can't quite claim to know the grammar of subcontinent ODIs well. They entertained in the World Cup, but their batsmen tried to win it through cute dabs and paddles. When England were sleepwalking through a 5-0 ODI series defeat in 2008-09, David Lloyd told the story through the way the respective sides' batsmen prepared to face a delivery. The Indians, he observed, had higher back lifts, ready to impart power into the shots and also trusting the pitches, looking to play down the ground. The England batsmen didn't lift those bats as high in preparation, they often pre-meditated, the crookedness of the face either way to run the ball behind square for a single, at times two, stood out.
England, though, are in a much better mental state than their two previous trips to India. In 2008-09 the captain and the coach weren't quite moving in the same direction; in the World Cup they were tired, injured and possibly longing for home. They will also gain from an Indian XI weakened by injuries. Still a major part of responsibility to prevent this from being yet another one-sided India-England series lies with their batsmen - crucially missing Eoin Morgan - and their response to the conditions.

Watch out for …
Craig Kieswetter comes with the promise of the power game required in India. He also comes with the confidence of having done well against India in the English summer, and then in the Champions League T20. England will want positive starts from him.
Gautam Gambhir will make a comeback not only to the side but also to the opening role, which he had to relinquish during the World Cup. This is the start of a defining season for him, a season he will want to get through without fitness-related layoffs, a season he will want to end with runs in Australia. Form doesn't really apply after the various breaks, but for what it is worth Gambhir has reached double figures in 17 of his last 18 innings, averaging 58 with two centuries and six fifties.
Team news
Despite Gambhir's comeback, both Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane are likely to be rewarded for their good work in England. As is the case with Ravindra Jadeja. The bowling, if it was possible, looks even weaker than it did in England. They will be forced to try Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav at some point in the series.
India (likely) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Parthiv Patel, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ajinkya Rahane, 5 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 R Ashwin, 10, 11 two out of Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron and Vinay Kumar
Jonny Bairstow and Ravi Bopara have made strong middle-order statements for England, which leaves a close competition. There is a case for including all five of Jonathan Trott, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Bopara and Bairstow. There is an equally strong case for playing Samit Patel at 7, as the second-spinner-allrounder.
England (likely) 1 Alastair Cook (capt.), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Jade Dernbach, 11 Steven Finn
Pitch and conditions
The scores in the two practice games have ranged between 114 and 367, but don't expect any favours for the bowlers, unless the pitch just turns out to be really slow. An expected high of 31 degree celsius and 61% humidity should test batsmen on the new no-runner rule. If the forecast of "scattered thunderstorms" doesn't come to fruition, that is.
Stats and trivia

  • Andrew Strauss, no longer part of England's ODI plans, scored 445 runs in his previous five matches in India.
  • If they all get picked, Kieswetter, Cook, Bairstow, Dernbach and Finn will be playing their first ODI in India.
  • India have lost two of their 19 completed home ODIs, both to South Africa. Similarly they have lost just two home Tests since March 2006, both to South Africa.[via Cricinfo]

Big Picture
Australia's month-long tour of South Africa begins with a Twenty20 in Cape Town, a match that will be South Africa's first international in any format since March 25. During that same period, Australia have been to Bangladesh for a one-day series and Sri Lanka for Tests, ODIs and Twenty20s. They haven't been overworked, though, and by comparison South Africa will have to shed their rust as quickly as possible. They have a new captain, Hashim Amla, standing in for the injured AB de Villiers, while star players Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn are being rested. Still, Twenty20 is a format that South Africa have mastered considerably better than their opponents in recent years.Australia are trying to find their best Twenty20 outfit, under the captaincy of Cameron White, and they have three uncapped men in this squad. One of those is the wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, who has benefited from Brad Haddin's recent retirement from the format and Tim Paine's broken finger. The side is also in a state of flux off the field: Troy Cooley is the acting coach for this trip after Tim Nielsen's resignation following the tour of Sri Lanka, while the selection panel is temporary while replacements are found. Five members of the Twenty20 squad will fly home ahead of the ODIs, so quite how much momentum the team could carry if they win in the shortest format is questionable. But kicking off the tour with a win would be an adequate start.

In the spotlight
Hashim Amlais one of the world's finest batsmen, but he is yet to show his best against Australia. Across all formats, he averages 39.05 against Australia, compared to an overall mark of 49.70. He also has the burden of captaining his country for the first time in his career. Graeme Smith is on hand to provide advice but the best way for Amla to lead is from the front - with big runs at the top of the order. At 18, Patrick Cummins will become Australia's second-youngest debutant in any format. Only Ian Craig, who won a baggy green at 17, was younger. Cummins bowls with genuine speed and has won rave reviews, most recently from his team-mate Shane Watson, who said Cummins was "as impressive as I've seen for any young guy coming through for the past ten years". He is, however, incredibly raw, and it will be interesting to see how he handles the pressures of international cricket.
Team news
The injury to AB de Villiers means Heino Kuhn will take the gloves, while Albie Morkel is also missing from the original squad due to injury. Wayne Parnell will struggle to make the final XI, while Ryan McLaren and Richard Levi are also in danger of missing out.South Africa (possible) 1 Hashim Amla (capt), 2 Graeme Smith, 3 JP Duminy, 4 Colin Ingram, 5 David Miller, 6 Heino Kuhn (wk), 7 Johan Botha, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Rusty Theron, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
The absence of Brett Lee due to his bout of appendicitis guarantees a debut for Cummins. On a pitch that could offer some turn, Steve O'Keefe and Steven Smith are both likely to play. Aaron Finch is the extra batsman in the squad, but he will struggle to oust Shaun Marsh or David Hussey.
Australia (possible): 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 David Hussey, 5 Cameron White (capt), 6 Steven Smith/Mitchell Marsh, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Steve O'Keefe, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Patrick Cummins, 11 Doug Bollinger.
Pitch and conditions
An early-season pitch at Newlands should be a touch on the slow side, so the spinners are likely to play an important role. The weather is expected to be fine and warm. Stats and trivia
  • Australia have won only one of their previous eight Twenty20 internationals, while South Africa have won six of their previous seven
  • Australia's leading Twenty20 international wicket-taker is Mitchell Johnson, who was not considered good enough to be part of this squad
  • Only three players from each side were part of the last Twenty20 between the two teams: Johan Botha, Robin Peterson and JP Duminy, along with David Warner, Cameron White and David Hussey
Quotes
"Everybody's been given their room and space to have a lot of freedom when they play, and also to express themselves within the team environment. It's been a really nice few days for the guys to connect with each other."
Stand-in captain Hashim Amla is pleased with South Africa's preparation ahead of the Twenty20s"We didn't play that well in Sri Lanka but in the same breath we weren't that far away either. I think we are heading in the right direction. We've got a very young squad together now and the more Twenty20 we play, the better we will be."
