Yusuf Pathan celebrates Cameron Borgas' wicket, Kolkata Knight Riders v South Australia, Champions League Twenty20, September 27, 2011
Will Yusuf Pathan flex his muscles against Royal Challengers?

Big Picture

Royal Challengers Bangalore lost a close match to the Warriors in the tournament opener and, if they are to make the semi-finals without net run-rates and other favourable results coming into the equation, a win here is a must. Their task has become tougher, with AB de Villiers ruled out of the tournament with a broken finger, fractured during practice on the match eve. Despite the extra pressure to win and de Villiers' absence, they go in as favourites against the underperforming Kolkata Knight Riders.
The Knight Riders' semi-final chances already seem bleak. They have lost consecutive games, and compounding their problems is a poor net run-rate of -0.624. To progress, they would have to produce two convincing wins - here and on October 1 against Warriors - and then hope for the results of other Group B games to go their way.
The Royal Challengers were on top at several stages in their opener, but let the game slip each time. If their batsmen get starts, like most of the top order did against Warriors, they will need to drive the advantage home better. If the bowlers manage to knock over most of the opposition's batting, they will need to finish them off without allowing the sort of partnership Ashwell Prince and Johan Botha produced in that game.
The Knight Riders' batting has faltered repeatedly, even after Gautam Gambhir's return. Batting first, they managed a total of just over a run-a-ball against Auckland in the qualifier, and looked on course for another poor score against Somerset in the main draw until a late Yusuf Pathan blitz. While chasing, the top order has failed, leaving the like of Ryan ten Doeschate with too much to do at back end of the innings. They have problems on the bowling front as well. The spin trio of Iqbal Abdulla, Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan haven't had the impact they had in IPL 2011.
 Watch out for …
Ryan ten Doeschate has looked the best of the Knight Riders' fielders and batsmen so far. They must play him higher up the order, possibly at No. 3, to make better use of his ability.
Daniel Vettori has the second-best economy rate in Twenty20 cricket (200 overs minimum) and bowled a typically effective spell against Warriors - 2 for 26 off four overs. If would be interesting to see how he fares against the big-hitting Yusuf and ten Doeschate.
 Team news
Tillakaratne Dilshan is likely to replace the injured AB de Villiers in the Royal Challengers' XI, and could be asked to keep wicket. Their other wicketkeeping option is Arun Karthik, who, if used, would probably come in for Mohammad Kaif. Current form dictates the Knight Riders should strengthen their batting. Brad Haddin might get a look-in, in place of Shakib Al Hasan.
 Stats and trivia

  • Rajat Bhatia, surprisingly, has been the Knight Riders' most effective bowler, conceding 6.20 runs per over, while averaging 20.00
  • The Knight Riders' biggest win ever came against the Royal Challengers - a 140-run win in the IPL curtain-raiser. However, both teams are virtually unrecognisable from that match
 Quotes
"When you have to win against a good opposition, you need to click as a team. The batting and bowling have to complement each other. We have not done that in the competition."
Gautam Gambhir laments the problems that have bogged his side down
"Unless you have someone like Malinga in the side you can never rely on anyone bowling the death overs, you can't pre-plan it."
Virat Kohli defends the young death bowlers in his side, and admits they aren't in Lasith Malinga's league...Source for preview:Cricinfo.com

Chennai Super Kings vs Cape Cobras
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)
Albie Morkel appeals, Chennai Super Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL, Durban, May 14, 2009
Albie Morkel will relish the contest against the Cobras

Big Picture
The Indian and South African champions clash in a fixture where one of them needs to bounce back and the other can ill-afford a slip in what has been dubbed the group of death.
Chennai are still smarting after their defeat to Mumbai Indians and Cape Cobras may be bracing themselves for a backlash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in front of a partisan home crowd. One defeat is allowed at the group stage, but if a team hopes to progress to the knockout stages, falling behind will leave it precariously placed. That is the situation the defending champions find themselves in. They would have felt they had scored enough against Mumbai - although they will expect meatier contributions from the middle order - but their bowling let them down. Albie Morkel and Doug Bollinger will be feeling the pressure to improve quickly.
Cobras began the tournament on a high and after conceding heavily in the first five overs against New South Wales, pulled themselves back into the game and dominated it. The bowlers adjusted quickly to the conditions and the batsmen were untroubled in the chase. The area which could use some work was the fielding and Cobras' assistant coach, Faiek Davids, said that they have been working extensively on it and will not make similar fluffs.
Watch out for …
There's no better motivation than to pit a man against old foes and that's what Albie Morkelwill be facing. In South Africa, the match between Morkel's home franchise, the Titans, and the Cobras is a massive north-south derby, particularly in rugby and Morkel will no doubt be looking forward to resuming the rivalry, albeit in different fashion. Morkel did not stand out with bat or ball in Chennai's first match but has plenty to prove, especially as he looks to stake a claim for a national recall. After playing a significant part in the Cobras capturing the South African title, Owais Shah faces big expectations in this tournament. He did not impress against New South Wales, scoring just three, dropping a catch and not being given a bowl. He may well be tossed the ball this time, but will have more important contributions to make with the bat, against a strong Chennai attack.
 Team news
Chennai fielded a strong side in their opener against Mumbai and will look to build some continuity with the XI they used. Nuwan Kulasekera and Srikkanth Anirudha could both be pushing for a place but both may have to wait a while longer for their opportunity. The Cobras operated well as a unit to win their opening match against New South Wales and will likely not tamper with a winning XI. Johann Louw and Rory Kleinveldt are waiting in the wings should they feel they need to tinker with the bowling, but Vernon Philander, Charl Langeveldt and Dale Steyn all performed well in Hyderbad and Robin Peterson, Justin Ontong and Owais Shah should be retained in the spin department.

Stats and trivia
  • Michael Hussey appears to be reaching his T20 prime. He played in nine matches last year and averaged 57.57
  • Herschelle Gibbs has the most ducks for the Cobras - seven in 30 matches. JP Duminy's struck the most fours for them - 89 in 37 games.
 Quotes
"It's important to bowl well in the last leg. That's when the new ball comes on well to the bat and if we can restrict them in the Powerplay overs, it would be tough to get our bowlers away after that."
Subramanian Badrinath believes the Chennai need to concentrate on bowling well at the death"Give my boys a stage, and they will play to the stage. With Chennai losing their first game, it is not only a big game for us, but for the home side too."
Cobras coach Richard Pybus says his team will not be overawed by the vocal Chennai crowd

Gautam Gambhir's return to competitive cricket was not a happy one as he was out first ball, Kolkata Knight Riders v Somerset, Champions League T20, Hyderabad, September 25, 2011

Big Picture
Both Kolkata Knight Riders and South Australia Redbacks suffered defeats in their opening games, and need quick turnarounds. The Knight Riders are worse off: their campaign has been shorn of momentum after successive losses to Somerset, including one in the qualification round. Gautam Gambhir's return to action after the concussion he suffered in England was closely watched, but fizzled out when he perished first ball. Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan batted extremely well to lift the Knight Riders to 161, but the bowling let them down for the second time in two games, despite not having a perceptible weak link.
South Australia were walloped by the Warriors in their first game, one in which they seemed saddled with one spinner too many. To make matters worse, Shaun Tait endured a forgettable day and was taken apart by JJ Smuts. Coming back from that 53-run hiding will require tremendous depths of resolve, but the fact that their opponents are just as short on confidence should lift their spirits.
It is early days yet, but the Warriors look the most complete side in Group B, which is widely considered the easier one to qualify from. Four other teams could be tussling for the second semi-final spot in the group, and the team that loses on Tuesday could be out of that race.

Watch out for …
Brett Leeplayed a key role in the Knight Riders' victory against Auckland Aces in the qualifying round, but has not been among the wickets. The chance to steam in against his domestic rivals could fire him up, though.
Michael Klinger was one of the stand-out batsmen in the previous edition of the Champions League. He started well in the chase against the Warriors, but will want to make a bigger contribution against the Knight Riders.
 Team news
South Australia will consider dropping one of their three spinners in favour of a seaming option. The Daniels - Harris and Christian - combined to pick up 4 for 47 against Warriors, but the rest of the attack went at over ten runs per over in picking a solitary wicket. The Daniels might be pressed into service earlier on Tuesday.
The Knight Riders have tried Jaidev Unadkat and L Balaji as Lee's support seamer, but neither looked convincing in their respective outings. With the spin depth in their side, they might be better off benching both, provided Jacques Kallis can complete a full spell. His solitary over was pounded for 16 runs in the previous game, which is an area of concern.
Stats and trivia
  • This will be the first encounter between these sides
  • Jacques Kallis is one of only five batsmen to have made more than 100 runs in the tournament. All five played in the qualifiers too.
Quotes
"We'll obviously sit down and have a chat and the selectors will have another look at it. But playing three spinners has worked very well for us over the last two years and I don't see that being any different on Tuesday or for the rest of the tournament."
Callum Ferguson reveals that South Australia might stick to the three-spinner strategy....Source For Preview Cricinfo.com

T&T players launch themselves on Kieron Pollard after their four-wicket win, New South Wales v Trinidad & Tobago, Champions League Twenty20, League A, Hyderabad, October 16, 2009

Big Picture
Two years ago a regional team from the Caribbean Islands entertained and captured the imagination of - at least - the Indian crowds. They played merry cricket, and their celebrations included national flags, something no other team in the Champions League had. They were almost the home team, and one man in particular, marauding runs, diving to pull off incredible catches and saves, became the darling of the crowds.
Two years on, that man Kieron Pollard is the ultimate freelance cricketer. He plays Twenty20 cricket in India, Australia and England, sometimes even when West Indies are playing international cricket. When the said team, Trinidad & Tobago, were winning the Caribbean T20 this year - qualification for the Champions League qualifiers a by-product of that - Pollard was playing the Big Bash in Australia.
Pollard and T&T raise the classical money-league questions. Was Pollard because of T&T or T&T because of Pollard? How much does Pollard owe T&T, his first team? Has he outgrown T&T? The two parties have followed the classical money-league solution too. They have both moved on seamlessly. Pollard plies his trade all around the world, and makes more money that he can imagine making with T&T. There is the general practical acceptance - at least on the surface - that making money through playing cricket is no sin.
T&T too have got used to life without Pollard. They have put together another steady team playing merry and effective cricket, they have won the Caribbean T20 again, they were the best team in the Champions League qualifiers, and who should they face in their first match in the main draw? Pollard's IPL side that is philosophically the exact opposite of T&T. Mumbai Indians have bought the finest players money could buy and auction would allow, they have bought the finest coaches the facilities, they have looked after their talent well, and when they were faced with a deluge of injuries they managed to even get the playing conditions twisted to accommodate five foreign players.

Watch out for …
Ravi Rampaulmade it a habit to strike early during the past international season at home. The definition of "early" changes with Twenty20, but he has been doing it in the qualifiers, and will be crucial again, especially in Bangalore, a track not tailor-made for T&T's slower bowlers.
Lasith Malinga won Mumbai a game off his bat on Saturday; he bowled a few trademark yorkers too, but he will surely want to make bigger impact with the ball than 4-0-29-1, and T20 cricket knows he can.

Team news
T&T preferred the same XI in the qualifying leg, but given the better pace of the Bangalore pitch and the small boundaries they might want to add to the only specialist fast bowler, Rampaul.
Mumbai don't have too many choices with team selection, and are likely to retain their winning combination. The one concern for them is their South African opening batsman, Davy Jacobs, who is a doubtful starter after being stretchered off the field

Stats and trivia
  • T&T have won nine of their last 10 completed T20 games.
  • Malinga scored a third of his career runs, 37 out of 113, in his match-winning effort against Chennai Super Kings.

Quotes
"We are looking forward to meeting the Mumbai Indians with Kieron Pollard on board, and also the Chennai Super Kings with Dwayne Bravo on board, and we will be coming hard at them. We are hoping to pull off a victory over both teams, and the boys are looking forward to playing against players who were part of our set-up. I think getting victory over those guys in this tournament will be feathers in our caps."
Darren Ganga suggests T&T haven't moved on that well after all
"I think this win will set the tone for us to go forward. We have won this game and this will definitely boost our confidence. We would like to stay very humble in the remaining matches, and do what we can do at our best." Harbhajan Singh, the Mumbai Indians captain, stays, well, humble after one Twenty20 win

Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh have a chat, Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2011, Mumbai, April 22, 2011
Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds are team-mates once again. This time Harbhajan is captain

Big Picture

They call themselves Mumbai Indians. But their 14-man squad has no one from Mumbai, and seven who aren't Indians. Three of those overseas players chose to play for Mumbai, ahead of other sides participating in the Champions League. If you thought that was farcical, consider this - an injury-induced relaxation in the rules allows Mumbai to field five overseas players instead of the four normally afforded to IPL sides, already generous when compared to the other teams. High-intensity earthquake zones present more level playing fields than this.

Even after the relief provided by the organisers, Mumbai look a side in strife. Harbhajan Singh - on the back of his worst season in international cricket - leads an outfit missing three Indian stars, including the biggest of them all. Sachin Tendulkar's absence is a challenge not only for Mumbai, but for the tournament itself. The problem won't be felt too badly at Chepauk though, which should fill up with faithful locals, who lapped up an entire IPL season without witnessing a home defeat.

Chennai Super Kings are among the favourites to win the tournament, and overwhelming favourites for their opening game. Michael Hussey won almost every piece of silverware on offer in Sri Lanka, while MS Dhoni was the Player of the Tournament in the England ODIs, a series in which Suresh Raina shook off his Test blues. R Ashwin and Doug Bollinger are also coming off consistent international performances. Mumbai will have to pull off a big surprise to put it past a bunch that has come into such good form ahead of the tournament.

Watch out for …

What has Andrew Symonds been up to? He had a limited role in the IPL and hasn't played any cricket since. Not that he will turn up rusty - expect him to fly, and let fly from the covers. Expect fireworks when he is at the crease. And read his lips when he sets fields in consultation with his captain Harbhajan.

M Vijay was the Man of the Match in the 2010 Champions League final, and in this year's IPL final. He wasn't able to capitalise on the India opportunities that came his way since, and this tournament gives him the chance to start afresh ahead of the Indian domestic season.

Team news

The Super Kings roped in Nuwan Kulasekara as a replacement for Tim Southee, but he is not a sure pick in the XI. They tend to play three spinners, especially at home, and the two spots for seamers are likely to go to Albie Morkel and Bollinger.

Mumbai are likely to bench Dilhara Fernando and James Franklin, unless there are more injuries in the lead-up, prompting additional tweaks to the rules. The bigger challenge will be filling in the seven local berths. Ambati Rayudu's form could dictate how far Mumbai go in the tournament.

Stats and trivia

  • R Ashwin was the Player of the Tournament of the Champions League 2010
  • The Super Kings and Mumbai have clashed nine times in IPL history, winning CSK leading the head-to-heads 5-4
  • Andrew Symonds has made 2115 runs in 89 Twenty20s at a strike-rate of 148.73 - the highest aggregate in a Mumbai side that is without Rohit Sharma

Quotes

"We have only four overs. We try to take wickets every ball." Lasith Malinga is not out there to contain

"If New Zealand lose, Scott [Styris] will wear a Springbok jersey and post the picture on Twitter, and vice versa for Albie [Morkel] if the Boks lose." Faf du Plessis and his team-mates are watching the Rugby World Cup closely

Match facts
Royal Challengers Bangalore v Warriors, September 23
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Chris Gayle launches a straight drive, Bangalore v Mumbai, 2nd qualifier, IPL 2011, Chennai, May 27, 2011
Chris Gayle wowed the Bangalore crowds with his flamboyant batting in IPL 2011

Big Picture
Royal Challengers Bangalore have a trend to break: they have played the opening games of two IPLs and one Champions League at home and ended up losing all three. They are among the favourites for the tournament, but are up against a side their coach rates highly - South Africa's Warriors, who were the losing finalists last year.
It's likely to be a straight fight between Bangalore's batting might and Warriors' bowling strength. Bangalore have several of the most dangerous overseas Twenty20 batsmen in their line-up, as well as Virat Kohli, who has shown over the past couple of seasons that he can crack the game's shortest format, and Saurabh Tiwary, who made his name in the 2010 IPL with batting that was unattractive but extremely effective.
Ranged against this is the bowling of Warriors. Johan Botha, with his pushed-through offspinners, and the hugely experienced Nicky Boje form the spin department, while the pace attack is filled with players on the fringe of the South African side and a 101-Test stalwart in Makhaya Ntini.
One of the big worries for Warriors is that the man who was instrumental in their march to the finals last year, former captain Davy Jacobs, isn't with them this time around, having chosen to play for the Mumbai Indians. Botha insisted the team could thrive without Jacobs, who repeatedly provided explosive starts in the 2010 campaign.
"We've known now [that Jacobs won't be with Warriors] for a few months and we've got over it as a team," Botha said. "Davy did do well in the CL, but after that he was injured quite a few times, and then in our local Twenty20 he had an up and down season, we've got young guys who can cover him." Strong words but at the Pro20 this year, almost all their batsmen struck at a rate below 120, not nearly enough. Can they find a batsman who can turn the game around with a sustained burst of big-hitting?
Watch out for …
His international career may be mired in litigation, but Chris Gayle'scareer as a Twenty20 freelancer is going great guns. He was the most arresting presence in the IPL: smashing a league-leading 608 runs at a strike-rate of 183.13. He also chipped in with his flat offspinners, taking eight wickets at the miserly economy-rate of 6.77.
Can Johan Botha be the inspirational captain Jacobs was in the previous season? He has shown himself to be a shrewd leader when he got the chance with South Africa. He is also a successful limited-overs bowler, and also made runs when surprisingly pushed up to No. 3 by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
Team news
While most of the Bangalore squad have been training since the weekend at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Virat Kohli joined the squad on Thursday morning. They have five world-class players in their team. As captain, Daniel Vettori is an automatic pick; as the man who turbo-charged their IPL campaign, Gayle should start; in the absence of Zaheer Khan, Dirk Nannes should also be in the XI. And in a squad bereft of other wicketkeepers, AB de Villiers should get the nod ahead of Dilshan.
In the absence of Jacobs, Warriors will likely open with Ashwell Prince and 23-year-old JJ Smuts. The big question for the management will be choosing the fast bowlers: Ntini was their most successful bowler in the Pro20, Justin Kreusch was their most economical bowler in the Pro20, Rusty Theron is their death overs specialist, and they have two other quicks with international experience in Wayne Parnell and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
Stats and trivia
  • Warriors made only one of the 16 highest totals in the Pro20 this season
  • With 70 sixes, Gayle is fourth on the list of most sixes hit in the IPL, though he has played less than half the number of matches of the top three
  • Bangalore will become the only team to have played all three seasons of the Champions League
Quotes
"At St George's Park, we get a nice vibe but we only get 15-20,000 people at capacity. The noise level here [at the Chinnaswamy Stadium] will be different for some of the guys who are experiencing it for the first time."
Ashwell Prince says some of the younger members of the side will have to adapt quickly to playing in front of bigger crowds
"My pace has always been my strength. I'm not thinking of slowing down, perhaps speeding up if anything." Even at 35, Dirk Nannes wants to remain a tearaway quick...Source for Preview:Cricinfo.com

Jacques Kallis plays an aggressive stroke, Auckland v Kolkata Knight Riders, CLT20 qualifier, Hyderabad, September 19, 2011
Jacques Kallis will hope to lead Kolkata into the main draw

Big Picture

Remember West Germany-Austria in the 1982 football World Cup? FIFA changed its rules after that match, scheduling the last round of group matches simultaneously to avoid a team having the advantage of knowing exactly what to do to at the very least to qualify. It isn't so in the Champions League Twenty20. Kolkata Knight Riders and Somerset have a clear advantage playing the final game of the qualifiers. Depending on what happens in the Leicestershire-Ruhuna match, both teams could qualify via a close contest that ensures the loser's net run-rate does not dip too low. Neither will want to risk anything of the sort, though, and knowing a victory guarantees qualification is enough incentive to ensure aggression from both sides.
For Kolkata, elimination is unthinkable. They have the tournament sponsors' logo splashed across their t-shirts and their superstar owner will arrive in Hyderabad for the match. Even without Gautam Gambhir and Eoin Morgan, they still have more players with international experience than Somerset, and will want to win in a more convincing fashion than they did in the first game. Their high-profile batsmen let them down against Auckland and Kolkata may think about rejigging the batting order.
Somerset arrived in Hyderabad only a day before their first game, but a last-ball win is just the tonic you need to shake off the jet-lag. Kolkata will be a tougher test though: Somerset's slow bowlers, who stifled Auckland, may not have as much success against Yusuf Pathan, and Steve Snell may not deal as easily with Brett Lee's yorkers as he did with Kyle Mills' length balls.
 Team news
Jacques Kallis averages 34.78 in Twenty20 cricket, but scores of 33 off 35 balls are not quick enough at the top of the order. He may drop down with Manoj Tiwary moving up. Jaidev Unadkat's one over against Auckland went for 14 runs, so L Balaji may replace him.
Somerset are missing several players due to their international commitments and are struggling to put out an XI, never mind having reserves. They are likely to go in with the same side that beat Auckland.
 Watch out for …
Rajat Bhatia conceded only 14 runs off four overs in Kolkata's first match. Somerset won't have seen him before and may find his slow cutters a challenge.
Somerset's middle order got them through their first game but they will be hoping for more from the top order. Roelof van der Merwe, who has a strike-rate of 133.39 in Twenty20s, could be the key to a swift start.
 Key contest
Every time Murali Kartik bowls in a high-profile tournament in India, there is talk about him having a point to prove. If he can get rid of Yusuf Pathan, it will add further validity to the claim he should have played more for India.
 Stats and trivia
Jacques Kallis is third on the list of players with most half-centuries in Twenty20 matches. His 21 is behind only Brad Hodge's 26 and David Hussey's 23.
 Quotes
"We tried too hard and got into trouble. So there were some lessons to take there."
Jacques Kallis after the narrow win against Auckland.
"Expectations were low from outside the team. However, the side themselves were always confident they could win."
Steve Snell on Somerset's under-dog tag.         Source For Preview:Cricinfo, com

Leicestershire v Ruhuna Preview CLT20 2011

Leicestershire v Ruhuna, September 21
Start time 16.00 (10.30 GMT)

The Ruhuna players gather around Sanath Jayasuriya after a wicket, Ruhuna v T&T, CLT20 qualifier, Hyderabad, September 19, 2011

Ruhuna are better placed than Leicestershire but neither side are guaranteed a place in the next phase even if they win today

Big Picture

Leicestershire, the Friends Life t20 champions, were expected to do better than the comprehensive defeat they suffered at the hands of Trinidad and Tobago. Going down by 51 runs leaves them precariously placed in the qualifiers. Nothing less than a resounding victory in the clash against Ruhuna will leave them with any chance of progressing.
Ruhuna were beaten in a tight game by T&T - who are already through - and are slightly better placed, but defeats for either team will send them back home. Much hinges on the final qualifier contest between Somerset and Kolkata Knight Riders; both those teams, with a win already in hand, might qualify in the event of a close clash where the net run-rate of the losing side may end up superior to that of the winner of Leicestershire v Ruhuna.
Losing wickets in a cluster at the death and being unable to check an onslaught by Sherwin Ganga in the company of Darren Bravo were the decisive factors in Ruhuna's defeat and they can ill-afford another slip-up against a side determined to make amends for a letdown. Leicestershire might be the senior citizens in this qualifier phase - their average age is 30-plus - but are loaded with experience. Their batting failed them against T&T, and while a win won't guarantee them a place in the next round, they can still crush Ruhuna's hopes.

Team news
Leicestershire need to address their batting concerns and could be tempted to bring in Matthew Boyce or Greg Smith, who has first-class and List A experience but hasn't yet played a Twenty20.
Seamer Arosh Janoda had a poor game after a tight start to his spell. He was taken for runs at the death in T&T's chase, finishing with figures of 2.5-0-35-1. Ruhuna may consider replacing him.
 Watch out for …
Paul Nixon announced his retirement from cricket during the 2011 English domestic season and had the perfect send-off when his team sneaked through to secure a thrilling win against Somerset in the t20 final. He's been playing at the first-class level for 22 years. Will tomorrow be his final appearance for Leicestershire, or can they extend his run for a little while more?
Ruhuna have Sanath Jayasuriya to bank on for an explosive start but their captain Mahela Udawatte can be reliable too. He's been a heavy run-getter in domestic cricket - he's also represented Sri Lanka in ODIs - and has a Twenty20 century to his name and a strike-rate of 125.73 in the shortest format.
 Stats & trivia

  • Leicestershire have been through bad times in Twenty20s before. Between July 2006 and June 2007, they suffered eight straight defeats in the format, all except one by reasonably sizable margins.
  • Allrounder TM Sampath has made the most Twenty20 appearances for Ruhuna - 23 in a three-year span. Jayasuriya has played 17 games for the side, and captain Udawatte seven.
 Quotes

"The spinners did well for us, but defending 138 is very difficult. It's a two-paced pitch that is hard to bat on."
Mahela Udawatte's team needs a better performance with the bat
"We were chasing a good total, and for that we needed a couple of partnerships but we didn't get them. It was poor execution from the batsmen. We have our fingers crossed now and hope for rain (laughs) in the other game. "
Matthew Hoggard's sense of humour is everlasting..Source For Preview:Cricinfo.com

Match facts
Ruhuna v Trinidad & Tobago, September 19
Start time 16.00 (10.30 GMT)

Each team plays only two matches in the qualifying round, and needs to win both to be guaranteed of a place in the main draw. Ruhuna and Trinidad & Tobago are pooled with Leicestershire and run-rate could come into play if all teams are level on a win each. A big loss for either side will effectively knock them out.
T&T will start favourites, given their squad is similar to the one that reached the final of the first Champions League Twenty20 in 2009. Adrian Barath, Lendl Simmons, Ravi Rampaul and Darren Bravo have all chosen to play the Champions League rather than the Twenty20 internationals in England. T&T relied heavily on their top three of Barath, Simmons and Bravo for runs during their victorious campaign in the Caribbean T20 in January. It was their bowling, however, that was the crux of their unbeaten run; the highest score they allowed any team was 136.
Ruhuna's win in the Sri Lanka Cricket Inter-Provincial Twenty20 Tournament was also built on strong bowling performances - they twice bowled out the opposition - but they will be missing their best bowler, Suraj Randiv, who has chosen to play for Chennai Super Kings in the Champions League, as well as Chanaka Welegedara, who is playing for Sri Lanka in the SSC Test.

Team news
Sanath Jayasuriya is the biggest name in the Ruhuna squad but has off late been found more often in the commentary box than on the field. Apart from him and Dinesh Chandimal, the rest of the squad consists of players unknown on the international stage. We may get a glimpse of Tillakaratne Dilshan's brother, allrounder TN Sampath.
Ruhuna (probable): 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Mahela Udawatte (capt) , 3 TN Sampath, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 5 Janaka Gunaratne, 6 Milinda Siriwardana, 7 Chinthaka Perera, 8 Omesh Wijesiriwardene, 9 Arosh Janoda, 10 Yashodha Lanka, 11 Alankara Asanka Silva
T&T had a settled line-up through their Caribbean T20 campaign and should feature the same side against Ruhuna.
T&T (probable): 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Jason Mohammed, 5 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Daren Ganga (capt), 7 Sherwin Ganga, 8 Kevon Cooper, 9 Samuel Badree, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Sunil Narine

Darren Bravo smashes a Tino Best bouncer during his 70 off 35 balls, Barbados v Trinidad & Tobago , Caribbean T20, Barbados, January 21, 2011
Darren Bravo averaged 48 in the Caribbean T20

Watch out for …
In recent times Caribbean players have earned as much recognition for their exploits in foreign Twenty20 competitions as for the West Indies team. For Darren Bravo, this is an opportunity not only to impress the West Indies selectors, but also the owners of IPL franchises.
Dinesh Chandimal has had a stop-start beginning to his international career: after a century during the ODI series in England, he was dropped for the final two home ODIs against Australia. The Twenty20 format may not be the best place to show he has overcome some technical deficiencies but he will be looking to impress the Sri Lankan selectors.
Key contest
Ruhuna's batsmen v T&T spinners: Offspinning allrounder Sherwin Ganga, offspinner Sunil Narine and legspinner Samuel Badree had plenty of success in the Caribbean T20 but will now be bowling against batsmen well-versed in playing spin.

Stats & trivia
During the Caribbean T20, four of T&T's bowlers had economy-rates of less than six an over, with Badree going at just 3.90 an over in his 20 overs.
Quotes
"Who knows, in the future cricket could be an Olympic sport and we could even play as a nation."
Daren Ganga has big aspirations for his T&T side.
"We are missing out on Chanaka Welegedara, Suraj Randiv and Shaminda Eranga, who are all doing national duty against Australia. The bowling department is a bit weak."
Ruhuna coach Sumithra Warnakulasuriya on his side's shortcomings.
