Big Picture
As Rudyard Kipling once put it: "East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." The contemptuous dominance that England enjoyed in their home Test series against India is now being reprised in reverse in their one-day tour against the same opponents.
England's opening two ODIs in Hyderabad and Delhi resulted in two crushing defeats, and unless they can stop the rot at the third time of asking in Mohali, they will have squandered the series with two games to play. It's hard to envisage any such transformation taking place, however. With one victory in their last 15 ODIs in India - and none since April 2006 - England have been in this position before, and have yet to work out an escape route.
India are a much-changed team from the outfit that won the World Cup back in April, but in their first home campaign since that momentous achievement, they have tapped into the same well of confidence. England faced trial by spin in the first game, and trial by seam in the second, and while their batsmen faltered on each occasion, India's have gone from strength to strength.
From MS Dhoni's blistering assault in the final 16 overs of the first match, to Virat Kohli's crushing double-century partnership with Gautam Gambhir in the second, the defining feature of India's performances to date has been the fluidity of their run-scoring. Whereas England's innings have been staccato at best, with occasional boundary shots punctuated by long periods of failed strike rotation, India's ability to create gaps in the field has been nigh on impossible to match, and even harder to stop.
In that regard, the absence of Eoin Morgan has been critical for England. His nominal replacement, Jonny Bairstow, hits a long ball given half a chance, as demonstrated on debut at Cardiff last month, but he has yet to learn the versatility required to dominate on Indian pitches. He's not alone in that regard. Craig Kieswetter has managed one boundary and seven runs in 13 balls so far, and while Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott have looked at ease in the conditions when they've got in, neither man has been able to put pedal to metal in the manner of their India counterparts.
England's problems extend to their bowling attack as well. Steven Finn and Tim Bresnan have impressed in an individual capacity, even though their figures hardly reflect their efforts, but Jade Dernbach's variations have been collared, while Samit Patel has struggled as a spin-bowling allrounder. Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and even Kohli's leg-rollers have all proven more effective. It will take a considerable swing in fortunes for England to prove greater than the sum of India's parts in the coming contests.

In the spotlight
There was no love lost between England's bowlers and Virat Kohli in Delhi, but seeing as he butchered them with a sublime 89-ball hundred, there was only one winner of that particular skirmish. Whatever technical suspicions were aired on the England tour, they were nowhere to be seen as he filleted the gaps in the field with aplomb, and he further confirmed his prowess on home soil with five nagging overs of unhittable medium pace. At the age of 22, he is seizing his chance to become the flag-bearer of India's new generation.
Jade Dernbach is a remarkable bowler for England to have in their ranks - a genuinely innovative seamer with an arsenal of variation to call upon, and time on his side to fine-tune his repertoire. When he gets it right, as he did with a looping slower ball to pin Gautam Gambhir lbw in Hyderabad, he can bamboozle the best players; however, when his variations are clocked, the joke is invariably on him - and so far in this campaign, he has one wicket at 99.00 in 16 overs. As Shane Warne once said of young legspin bowlers, he needs a lot of love to build the confidence upon which his skills will be pinned, but he's not getting it on this most torrid of tours to date.

One of the most northerly venues in India, the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium has traditionally offered something to the seamers, although on the evidence of the second ODI, it is India's pairing of Praveen Kumar and Vinay Kumar who are better placed to exploit whatever is on offer.

No change was necessary the hosts in Delhi despite the conditions being markedly different, and so more of the same can be expected in Mohali. It makes quite a contrast to the recent tour of England, on which casualties abounded.

Patel's place is under scrutiny following two poor bowling performances in the opening two games. Chris Woakes, one of his likelier replacements, has been ruled out of the tour through injury. Despite being at 30s and 40s in Delhi, England may yet resist the temptation to tinker with the batting, with Ian Bell once again set to wait his turn.

Big Picture
One more match, 100 overs of effort at best, and India's dreadful tour can finally be consigned to history. Cardiff was the scene of England's first match of an eventful 2011 summer, against Sri Lanka back in May, and now it is preparing to lower the curtain on the season as well. Two ad-hoc Twenty20s remain to be completed against West Indies next week, but to all intents and purposes, with the midpoint of September already passed, this contest possesses a true air of finality.
India achieved a victory of sorts at Lord's last week, insofar as they managed not to lose the fourth ODI - a match that was decreed to be a tie by Messrs Duckworth and Lewis after rain wrote off the final seven deliveries of the match. As had been the case with the wash-out in Durham, the arrival of rain probably did India a disservice at that particular moment in time, given that with Stuart Broad injured, England would have struggled to rustle up 11 more runs with one fit tail-ender still in hand.
Given the vast improvement in their performances in this one-day leg of the tour, it is perhaps a pity that India do not have at least a share of the series to fight for on Friday, not least for the sake of the hardy Welsh souls who will brave the autumnal conditions in Cardiff - and with any luck there will be more than 922 punters in the ground, which was the number that turned out to watch England's astonishing victory over Sri Lanka four months ago.
Nevertheless, all throughout this summer, England have proven the more resourceful at the critical moments of each contest, and the prospect of sending the World Champions home without so much as a consolation victory in ten international fixtures ought to be more than enough incentive to keep the intensity levels topped up for one more day.
Whether India are quite so motivated remains to be seen. Certainly the team's failure to attend the ICC Awards in Mayfair on Monday night - despite staying at a hotel less than ten minutes down the road - gave the impression of a squad that has mentally checked out of this tour. With the likes of Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni finding some late form with the bat, they should have the weapons to give England a battle, but realistically, all attention is now shifting to the rematch in India, starting on October 14. To win in your own seaming conditions is one thing, but to beat the World Champions in their own lair would be something else entirely.

At Lord's on Sunday, poor old Ravi Bopara came as close as he ever has done to cracking international cricket. For 96 runs and 111 deliveries, he produced his finest performance in England colours, but then - with the rain pouring, wickets falling and overs running out - he clobbered Munaf Patel to deep midwicket from what proved to be the final ball of the match, and so left England with a share of the spoils instead of what could have been a one-run win on D/L. Still, he could hardly be blamed in the circumstances, and his final score far exceeded his previous best of 60 in 62 previous matches. In the absence of Eoin Morgan, Bopara has a big chance to prove his true one-day worth in the coming weeks.
It's been a pretty bleak tour for MS Dhoni, whose previously unimpeachable status as India's captain has come under serious scrutiny while his team has staggered from one disaster to the next. On a personal note, however, he is just beginning to rediscover his best form as the summer winds to an end, and after digging India out of a massive hole at The Oval, he combined with Suresh Raina at Lord's in a record partnership of 169. His personal share was 78 from 71 balls, and stands him in good stead for the return series next month, let alone a shot at that elusive consolation prize in Cardiff.

Stuart Broad sustained a torn muscle in his shoulder while bowling his final over at Lord's, and so misses the rest of the English season as well as the tour of India next month. England's injury list grew further after Ben Stokes suffered a finger injury during England's practice session on Thursday. Yorkshire's Jonny Bairstow and Somerset's Jos Buttler have been called up as cover, although with two spinners likely in India, Samit Patel could slot into the vacancy.

Through the arrival of Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane at the top of the order, and the revival of Raina and Dhoni lower down, India's batting has acquired a relative degree of solidity in the latter stages of the tour. As ever it is their bowling that has struggled to contain England's ambitions. RP Singh put in a shift with the new ball at Lord's but still ended up going at nearly seven an over, while Munaf Patel's important over at the death didn't quite mask his previous frailties. Maybe the time has come to blood the speedy Varun Aaron? They don't have much to lose.

The weather is expected to be clear for the evening of the match, though Wales in September is no time or place for making assumptions. When asked how the wicket looked, Cook replied, helpfully: "22 yards long!" However, he did concede that two spinners was in his mind.

• The four-wicket victory against Australia at Cardiff last year was the first time in three attempts that England had completed an ODI match at the venue, after washouts against Pakistan in 2006 and South Africa in 2008.
• India is the only Test team yet to play an international fixture in Wales. Each of the first five matches at the ground were neutral ODIs involving Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, West Indies and Bangladesh, while the Test in May was the first time Sri Lanka had visited.
• Suresh Raina needs 22 more runs to reach 3000 in ODIs.

Big Picture
India landed in England on July 13. Over the last two months they have lost eight players to injuries, many others have lost form, and an equal number didn't even bring it to begin with. Their No. 1 ranking is gone, the Twenty20 international was lost, and now they can't even win the ODI series. The frightening part for them is that things could still get worse from here. This match is their last chance to win an international in England; the final game is in Wales.
In terms of disastrous tours, this one ranks right up there with the ones to Australia in 1991-92 and 1999-2000, to South Africa in 1996-97 and to the West Indies in 1989 (leaving aside the tours before India started winning Tests). Yet, except for the West Indies in 1989, they managed to win something on the other tours. Here all the silverware they carry is Rahul Dravid's Man-of-the-Series award in Tests and Ravindra Jadeja's Man-of-the-Match from The Oval ODI. It could still be argued, a bit cruelly, that for all his heroics, Dravid wouldn't have won his award but for the England norm to present a series award to a player from both teams.
Then again cruel is what this trip has been. The weather has interrupted at crucial moments, killing the first ODI with India in ascendency, reducing the second to a near T20, a format where England are world champions. It could be argued that the Duckworth-Lewis method helped India in the third ODI, but their momentum was stalled just when they were making a comeback and the damp outfield negated the spinners to an extent.
All that doesn't mask England's ruthlessness at the fag end of a long season. If they stunned India with their unwavering will in the Test series, complacency and contentment have been conspicuous by their absence so far in the ODIs. Unlike their winter Ashes tour, where they emptied their tank in the Tests, England have fuel left in reserve here. Craig Kieswetter has brought freshness to the top of the order and the pitch for The Oval ODI suggests they can produce green tracks without any fear of a backlash from India's attack.
Lord's, though, is usually a flat track, but weather forecasts that suggest a 60% chance of precipitation could spell further trouble for the visitors. If it helps, two of India's most famous wins have come at Lord's: the World Cup final of 1983 and the 326-run chase in the 2002 NatWest final.

Even in the worst of circumstances, even when India are fielding with the opposition at 700 for 2, there is one man who suggests there is no place he'd rather be. Suresh Raina showed more of that in the field at The Oval, when the specialist spinners were all but bowled out. He tied the batsmen down with the ball, dived around all over the place in the field, and delayed England's eventual win. However, it's with the bat that he can lack the will to fight through long testing periods. It's possible he is the designated counter-attacker in the ODIs, but starting with the West Indies tour, he has been out too many times trying to slog in the middle overs to continue to play the same way and must adapt to the situation once in a while. Of course, there are doubts as to whether he has the game to do that.
When James Anderson gets it right, he can win ODIs on his own. He was a man who would have rather been elsewhere during the World Cup on flat tracks in the subcontinent. On helpful tracks, though, he is back to enjoying it with the ball and in the field, where he is as good as they make fast bowlers. All he needs now is killer final spells at the death.

England's batting can prove shaky against turn even in England, but they aren't likely to change the XI that won at The Oval. If at all, they could call in Samit Patel for Ben Stokes, who is not bowling at the moment and whose early rushes against spin haven't been too encouraging. Ravi Bopara has surely earned himself another game after a 41-ball 40, and as has been the case with Bopara, it is one game at a time.

India's ordinary bowling pushed them out of their comfort zone, and it proved to be a good thing. Less than a day after his arrival in India, the bowling allrounder Ravindra Jadeja held onto the champagne given to the Man of the Match. He will surely play at No. 7, but will India continue to tease those who have been clamouring for a debut to Varun Aaron, who is supposed to have pace? If that happens, at whose expense will it happen, RP Singh or Munaf Patel?

The Big Picture
England celebrated reaching No. 1 in the world with a good night in Birmingham on Sunday but it was soon back to the day job and, four days later, they already face the first test of their new status. The 'dead rubber syndrome' is always a risk when a team has scaled such heights to secure a major goal and Andrew Strauss will be desperate that nothing takes the gloss off the achievements of the last month.
In truth it will take a lot to remove the after-glow of three commanding performances, but this England team are never satisfied. They'll see this final Test at The Oval as a chance to lay down another marker with a show of hunger and desire. Even the great Australian sides under Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh had issues with keeping intensity high when a series was decided. England benefited with a number of one-off Test victories and won't want to offer India a similar opportunity.
It's difficult to see India bouncing back to save face over the next five days. They have been so far off the pace that this is a series they'll want to consign to history as quickly as possible. That, though, will be easier said than done with the fall-out well under way back at home and serious questions being asked of the team. Some of those questions are more sensible than others, but a number of players will be heading back with damaged reputations.
The much-vaunted batting line-up have one more chance to live up to their billing having not reached 300 in the series. The wait goes on for Sachin Tendulkar's 100th hundred, while Gautam Gambhir has disappointed and VVS Laxman hasn't made the most of some decent form. Then there's the challenge of taking 20 wickets. The pace bowlers have all had their moments but, collectively, have not been able to sustain pressure on England.
Praveen Kumar has been a tireless workhorse and Ishant Sharma has kept running in, but they have suffered from not having an economical spinner to tie up an end. If Oval history is anything to go by they could be in for more hard toil.

 Watch out for...
It's been a mark of how dominant England's quick bowlers have been that Graeme Swann has been able to get away with his least productive Test series. He bowled nicely at Lord's but conditions haven't been in his favour and he struggled after being hit on the left hand at Trent Bridge, and it would complete the series perfectly if he could play a key role here. It would also quieten talk that he has a weakness against batsmen who attack him - like Mike Hussey did during the Ashes - and with a winter of cricket in the Middle East and subcontinent England will want their premier spinner at the top of his game again.
Sachin Tendulkar has been given a standing ovation every time he has walked to the crease and on most occasions when he's walked back. The problem has been that on none of those occasions as he had a hundred to his name. Even taking into account Tendulkar's lack of match practice before this series - not so much preparation time as he spent hours training at Lord's - and the strength of England's attack a top-score of 56 is still a major surprise. Credit for that goes mainly to the bowlers, especially James Anderson and Stuart Broad, but as India crumbled in the second innings at Edgbaston Tendulkar eased to 40 before being run-out backing up. The series needs a Tendulkar special.

With Jonathan Trott and Chris Tremlett again ruled out the only question mark surrounds James Anderson's fitness. He came through a net session on Wednesday and the talk was positive from the England camp. Steven Finn and Graham Onions remain on standby should he be ruled out. Ravi Bopara, meanwhile, keeps his spot at No. 6 but pressure is growing on him to secure a place on the winter tour.

Praveen Kumar took a nasty blow on the thumb at Edgbaston and India were unsure about his fitness during training on Wednesday although he bowled a lengthy spell. RP Singh, who impressed on the 2007 tour, could come into the line-up, and he might play even if Praveen is fit with Sreesanth under pressure. A twin-spin attack including Pragyan Ojha is an outside chance, but Ojha could also pressure Amit Mishra. Meanwhile, Suresh Raina has been sorted out by the England bowlers but may retain his place ahead of Virat Kohli.

A typical Oval pitch is expected (not the crumbling-type surface produced for the 2009 Ashes) which should mean a chance for the batsmen to dominate, something only England's have done so far in this series. There is a chance of some rain on Thursday but the weather is due to clear up after that until a chance of showers later in the weekend.
