Big Picture

Bangladesh's ODIrecord has improved steadily over the years - the 4-0 drubbing of New Zealand and the win against England at the 2011 World Cup being some recent notable achievements. Both those wins came at home, and it's at home that their spin-strong attack can challenge their opponents seriously, if not necessarily win. This time, Bangladesh's opponents are a team on a high and significantly superior to those they played in the lead-up to this bilateral series. Bangladesh claimed wins in dead rubbers against Zimbabwe and West Indies - not a great consolation since they were expected to do much better - and caught a glimpse of what they might be up against during their big defeat in the Twenty20 international at the start of this tour.
Though Bangladesh's bowlers were largely economical, Pakistan's batsmen gave their own bowling attack enough runs to defend on a tricky pitch in Mirpur. In their chase, Bangladesh stagnated, losing wickets early, hitting their first boundary as late as the ninth over and showing little resistance against the variations of Pakistan's bowlers, including Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal and Shoaib Malik. Not only do Pakistan have quicker bowlers, their spinners can be just as effective in Bangladeshi conditions. It's a tall order for the hosts to spring a surprise in the three one-day games but they are playing where they play best, and it remains to be seen how strong a challenge they present.

While Bangladesh's heavy reliability on Shakib Al Hasan is likely to continue, Bangladesh's vice-captain Mahmudullahwill also be expected to play a significant role. An offspinner and a middle-order batsman, Mahmudullah has played several handy knocks, bowled tight spells and cleared the boundary at the death. He's part of a core of senior players that includes Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal, and his all-round ability is a big asset.Shoaib Malik will be under pressure. He's not been in great touch since his return to international cricket, after being cleared by the PCB's integrity committee. His scores in his last six international innings read: 7, 11, 2, 0, 2* and 2. While part of a team on the upswing, his own form has been on the decline and another couple of failures won't augur well for his selection prospects.
 Team news
Trouble with his knee forced Tamim to be rested in the Twenty20 international and he hoped to return for the limited-overs games.Bangladesh (possible) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Shahriar Nafees/Alok Kapali, 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Naeem Islam, 8 Nasir Hossain, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel Hossain.
Malik's troubles might begin with the return of Younis Khan, who didn't play the Twenty20 game.
Pakistan (possible) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Asad Shafiq, 5 Umar Akmal (wk), 6 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Abdul Razzaq/Sohail Tanvir, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema.
 Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan and Bangladesh will be playing each other in an ODI for the first time since June 2010, when the teams met in the Asia Cup in Dambulla. Of the 26 games the teams have played, Bangladesh have lost 25 but their only win is a famous one.
  • Misbah-ul-Haq has an impressive record in ODIs, averaging 42.42 in 86 matches. He has 18 half-centuries in the format, but no hundreds.
 Quotes
"Pakistan are playing very consistent cricket and it'll be tough to beat them, but if are boys are up for it, we should be able to do it."
Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh's captain
"If it's a spinning wicket we have spinners, if it's not then we also have good fast bowlers."

A delighted Misbah-ul-Haq after guiding Pakistan to victory, Pakistan v Sri Lanka, Only T20I, Abu Dhabi, November 25, 2011
The spotlight will be on Misbah-ul-Haq as Pakistan attempt to overcome their tendency to slip on the odd banana peel

Matches: Bangladesh v Pakistan at Dhaka
Series/Tournaments: Pakistan tour of Bangladesh
Teams: Bangladesh | Pakistan

Big Picture

It is all coming together for Pakistan cricket. Since the sordid English summer of 2010, Misbah-ul-Haq's side has stayed clear of controversy with a sense of purpose and discipline rarely seen in Pakistan outfits. That discipline has now permeated into their cricket; they have sacrificed some of their inherent flash in favour of winning ugly, and are yet to lose a bilateral series this year. One test remains - have they overcome their tendency to slip on the odd banana peel?
Bangladesh are among the more treacherous banana peels going around. Pakistan would know - their defeat in a 1999 World Cup encounter between the sides is still being spoken about. That loss paved the way for Bangladesh attaining Test status, and three years later they nearly toppled Pakistan in the long format, before Inzamam-ul-Haq pipped the thriller by a one-wicket margin. That tour, in 2003, was the last bilateral encounter between these sides. Here's to a renewal of rivalries.
The one-off Twenty20 offers Bangladesh their best chance of an upset. They recently outplayed West Indies in a similar tour-opening Twenty20 game. Pakistan have been on the road for a while now, and are unlikely to be caught unprepared, but Misbah-ul-Haq's men would be wary, all the same.
 Form guide

Bangladesh: WLLLL
 Watch out for …
Pakistan fans will have their first sighting of a raft of spinners on this tour, but few will match the allrounder Nasir Hossain for spunk. He gives his offbreaks a rip, fields with rare energy for a Bangladesh player, and celebrates his dismissal with outrageous WWE moves. Additionally, he packs a fair tonk with the bat.
The spot-fixing scandal robbed Pakistan of two of the most attractive fast-bowling talents in the game, but, in typically Pakistani fashion, they brushed aside the setback and found worthy replacements. Mohammad Khalil, who returns to the fold after a six-year gap, is the latest in the fast-bowling pipeline. His first stint at the highest level lasted only two Tests and three ODIs, but he will hope his second coming counts for more.
 Team news
Pakistan are unlikely to change the combination that beat Sri Lanka on November 25, but will be tempted to give Younis Khan a game before the ODI and Test legs of the tour.
Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Asad Shafiq / Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Umar Akmal (wk), 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Aizaz Cheema, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Saeed Ajmal
Bangladesh are without Mohammad Ashraful, who played in the West Indies T20. Mahmudullah who missed that game should come in for him.
Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Alok Kapali, 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Shafiul Islam
 Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan and Bangladesh have played four Twenty20s, with the former winning all four
  • Bangladesh have won only four of the 17 Twenty20 games they have played, of which only two were against a top-flight side - West Indies on both occasions
 Quotes
"It would be a big folly on our part to think we can walk over Bangladesh. We are playing a full series in Bangladesh after a long time and I have told the players to treat the series as a top ones because there will be lot of pressure on us."
Misbah-ul-Haq is not taking Bangladesh lightly at all
"West Indies were favourites against us as we don't usually play Twenty20s. At the end of the day, we bowled well and despite a hiccup in batting we finished as winners."
Mushfiqur Rahim is bullish about his team's chances

Virender Sehwag and Duncan Fletcher have to guide a relatively youthful Indian side
Matches: India v West Indies at Cuttack
Series/Tournaments: West Indies tour of India
Teams: India | West Indies

Big Picture
India's previous home one-dayer took place in front of a sparse crowd at the Eden Gardens, reinforcing fears over the quantity of cricket being played, but with Tuesday's match taking place at the smaller cricketing centre of Cuttack, a jam-packed stadium is expected. Even though the the biggest crowd-pullers like MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar are missing, tickets sales at the Barabati Stadium have been brisk, and even the practice sessions drew plenty of spectators.
A full-strength India would be expected to roll over West Indies at home, but they are missing at least four of their headliners. In addition, they have lost the most experienced bowler in their squad, Praveen Kumar - he was ruled out of the first three one-dayers with an injury. That means the most seasoned of the quicks is Vinay Kumar, all of 11 one-dayers old, giving the stand-in captain Virender Sehwag something of a challenge.
India are also missing two of their finishers, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, giving the likes of Rohit Sharma an audition for a permanent place in the hugely competitive middle order.
Despite India facing these hurdles, Darren Sammy has no illusions of the task ahead of his team, calling the series a "very, very tough challenge". Australia are the only team to have won a one-day series in India since April 2005. West Indies are boosted by the arrival of Kieron Pollard, an impact player who can quickly transform matches, and Lendl Simmons, their most consistent one-day batsman of the year. Sunil Narine, the unconventional Trinidad & Tobago offspinner whose variations mystified batsmen in the Champions League T20, could also pose problems in his first outing in international cricket.
Form guide
India WWWWW (Most recent first)
West Indies LWWWW
Watch out for…
Kieron Pollard has long had an uneasy relationship with the West Indies board, and despite his superstar status in the Twenty20 format, West Indies don't consider him for selection. That leaves the one-day format as his only platform for international cricket. And, worryingly for him, if there's one thing West Indies cricket have in abundance, it's medium-pace bowling, big-hitting allrounders. Darren Sammy is, obviously, an automatic pick, Andre Russell has displayed his talent this year, and Dwayne Bravo could also be a contender as and when fit.
Ravindra Jadeja was a deeply unpopular figure towards the end of 2010, but has won over some of the critics with his performances in the home-and-away series against England. Two Man of the Match awards and a bagful of wickets have secured his place in the XI for the current series, but he needs to extend that run. If Yuvraj Singh returns for the Australia tour, India could be tempted to go back to their World Cup-winning formula of seven-batsmen and four-bowlers, which could squeeze Jadeja out of the XI.
Pitch and conditions
The last time these two teams faced off at the Barabati Stadium was nearly five years ago, when India managed to defend 189. This time, though, it is expected to be a high-scoring match, as most ODIs in India usually are. "There will be plenty of runs for the batsmen," the curator Pankaj Patnaik said. "I am not ruling out a total of 300. Bowlers will get good bounce and there will be a little turn for spinners." Dew is expected to play a role, though a chemical spray will be regularly used to reduce its impact.
Team news
The absence of Dhoni means Parthiv Patel will have to be picked, dimming the chances of Ajinkya Rahane getting a game early in the series. Rohit Sharma, returning after a finger injury sidelined him during the England tour, is likely to get the nod ahead of Manoj Tiwary for a place in the middle order. The injury to Praveen could allow India play both their rookie quick bowlers, Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron.
India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag (capt), 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Vinay Kumar, 10 Praveen Kumar , 11 Umesh Yadav
West Indies expect Shivnarine Chanderpaul to play despite a strained calf muscle, though, he did not practise on the eve of the match. Ravi Rampaul will have recovered from his stomach bug, and could replace Kemar Roach. The batting has been a worry, but there isn't much West Indies can do other than shuffle the order and separate the inexperienced top three.
West Indies (probable) 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Ravi Rampaul, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Sunil Narine
Stats and trivia

  • India have won their previous nine one-dayers at home. Their last defeat was against South Africa in the league phase of the World Cup.
  • West Indies are tied with Australia as the team with the most ODI wins over India in India.
  • Lendl Simmons has one hundred and seven half-centuries in 12 one-day innings in 2011.
Quotes
"Fitness-wise, we are stronger as a team. The batsmen are showing signs that they can bat for long periods. Most of all, we are showing a fighting spirit."
Darren Sammy is happy with both the spirit showed by the team, and their ability to get through five Tests in five weeks without any major fitness-related issues
"They are very good bowlers, youngsters who need to learn a lot. They are on the right track, and with coach Eric Simons they are doing a great job."
Virender Sehwag isn't too concerned about the green attack he has at his disposal

Shahid Afridi pats Umar Gul on the back, Pakistan v Sri Lanka, World Twenty20 final, Lord's, June 21, 2009

Big Picture

Twenty20 might have become the origin of everything that is bad (or good, depending on your affiliation) about cricket, but the international Twenty20 game has had almost no role to play in that development. Consider these stats: we have had 32 Tests so far in 2011 and 139 ODIs - a number inflated by the World Cup, no doubt - but only a piddling 19 Twenty20 internationals. Comparing that number against the 74 fixtures IPL 2011 alone had, gives you even better perspective of the space T20Is occupy.
T20Is have been reduced to irrelevant one- or two-match series, shoe-horned at either end of long bilateral tours. The stakes are so low that teams don't take these games seriously. A part of the reason is the quirky scheduling of the World Twenty20. Initially planned as a biannual event that would lend context to the format, it made three London-bus appearances in four years, before hibernating out of our conscious. The next edition will be held in September 2012 in Sri Lanka, and teams will want to start drawing up plans now, after a year dominated by the World Cup and a clutch of marquee Test series.
Sri Lanka haven't looked like winning anything in the longer formats since the World Cup. Indeed, they have lost all their Test and ODI series since then. However, in that same period, they have been unbeaten in Twenty20s, and are in the middle of an impressive sequence of five successive wins. They will be desperate to extend that run and build momentum in the lead-up to the World Twenty at home, even as they seek succour from their reversals in the other formats.
Pakistan have always impressed in Twenty20s, a six-match losing run last year notwithstanding. They have won the World Twenty20 once, and made the final and the semi-finals on the other two occasions. Their fortunes next year will hinge on how the team responds to Misbah-ul-Haq's leadership. His safety-first method has been an unequivocal success in the Test and ODI versions, but it remains to be seen whether it will work in Twenty20s.
 Form guide

 Watch out for …
Misbah-ul-Haqis now known for his equanimity as much as his poetic forward defence. He has moulded the Pakistan side in his own image, leading to the increasing popularity of the hash-tag #TeamMisbah on Twitter. When he first announced himself, Misbah was anything but the obdurate middle-order milker that he has become now. He lit up the inaugural World Twenty20 with a bunch of audacious innings that took Pakistan to within a shot of glory. Which version of Misbah will be on display in this game?
At various points during the tour Tillakaratne Dilshan has looked tired, indignant, sad and frustrated. By the end of the ODI series, with his form and his side's fortunes in a seemingly terminal slump, his dominant expression seemed to suggest resignation. The chance to thrash it around in the shortest format should lift his spirits; on Friday, no one will question his shot-selection if he gets out playing those loose on-the-up heaves.
 Team news
In Mahela Jayawardene's absence, Sri Lanka might be forced to open with Dinesh Chandimal, unless Upul Tharanga gets a look in. Given his poor ODI form, that is unlikely.
Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 2 Dinesh Chandimal, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Chamara Silva, 5 Dimuth Karunaratne, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Dilruwan Perera/Kosala Kulasekara, 9 Thisara Perara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 10 Dilhara Fernando
Pakistan have 14 fit players in their squad, of which Abdur Rehman and Sarfraz Ahmed are almost sure to miss out.
Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat/Asad Shafiq, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Umar Akmal (wk), 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Aizaz Cheema, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Saeed Ajmal
 Stats and trivia

  • There's a Pakistan traffic-jam at the head of the list of leading wicket-takers in the format. Shahid Afridi has 53, followed by Umar Gul (47) and Saeed Ajmal (45). How Sri Lanka would have loved to have No. 4 on that list - Ajantha Mendis - fit and available.
  • Dilshan is one of only five T20I centurions. Jayawardene is another, but like Mendis, he isn't around for this game
 Quotes
"It will be a new game on Friday and a change of format, so I hope the players lift themselves."
Tillakaratne Dilshan hopes a change in format will lead to a change in fortunes
"He still has a lot of cricket in him and just needs one innings to get back in touch."

Matches: Pakistan v Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi
Series/Tournaments: Sri Lanka tour of United Arab Emirates

Big Picture

What is ailing Sri Lankan cricket? In the past eight months, following the World cup, they have played eight series across formats against top-flight teams, and gone on to lose six of them. The two victories came in Twenty20 series, if that term can be used to describe one- and two-match Twenty20 shoot-outs. Their decline in Test cricket was not a complete surprise, given how much the side depended on Muttiah Muralitharan, but the ODI slump cannot be easily explained.
The answer lies in the batting numbers: since the World Cup final, Sri Lanka's top order, with one notable exception, has endured significant drops in their batting averages. The captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has been the biggest offender, scoring 267 runs at a pitiful average of 17.80. Kumar Sangakkara and Upul Tharanga have also been poor imitations of their usual pace-setting selves at the top of the order, while Angelo Mathews is going through his worst phase since emerging as a world-class allrounder.
Mahela Jayawardene is the one man who has managed to steer clear of the Sri Lankan batting nadir. He delivered them their only win in this series with a sparkling half-century in the second game. Jayawardene won't be playing Wednesday's dead rubber because of a knee injury.
Sri Lanka's chances of a face-saving win are further blighted by the prime form of the Pakistan bowling unit. Saeed Ajmal is among the most dangerous offspinners going around now, while Mohammad Hafeez adds another dimension with his mix of straight ones and straighter ones. Umar Gul has been exemplary with the new ball, while Aizaz Cheema has shown that he belongs at this level. Pakistan's worries, if any, will be on the batting front too. But if their bowlers continue to be unplayable, it won't matter. And if all else fails, they still have Shahid Afridi.
Form guide
Pakistan: WWLWW (most recent first)
Sri Lanka: LLWLW
 Watch out for …
At the risk of stating the obvious, don't take your eyes off Shahid Afridi. He batted responsibly in the fourth ODI, curtailing his instincts for the most part of his innings, and still needed only 65 balls for his 75. Later, he slid clumsily while attempting to save a boundary in the outfield and got his knee stuck in the turf. It was the sort of injury that stalled Simon Jones' career for four years. Afridi came back after three overs, limped through his run-up and ripped out five wickets. Expect the X-man celebration to make a few appearances in Abu Dhabi.
Lasith Malinga has largely been off the boil in this series. His six wickets have come at nearly five runs per over, and three of those dismissals came in a single match-winning effort. Given how patchy Pakistan's batting form has been thus far in the series, he will be targeting their toes on Wednesday. Can his yorkers provide Sri Lanka some succour?
 Team news
Shoiab Malik looked out of place on his return to the side, but an injury to Abdul Razzaq is likely to give him another chance. Razzaq is returning home with a shoulder injury that puts him in doubt for the upcoming Bangladesh tour as well. With the series in the bag, Gul might be in line for a break, in which case Junaid Khan could get a well-deserved chance.
Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Abdul Razzaq/Shoaib Malik, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul/Junai Khan, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema
Jayawardene's absence could pave the way for Dimuth Karunaratne's inclusion in the Sri Lankan XI, unless Chamara Silva is ready to play after being called up two days ahead of the game. Angelo Mathews' form is likely to be a huge worry, but Sri Lanka don't have the reserves to afford him a break now.
Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Dimuth Karunaratne/Chamara Silva, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Seekkuge Prasanna, 11 Dilhara Fernando
 Stats and trivia

  • Tillakaratne Dilshan is yet to hit his first six in ODIs since taking over as full-time Sri Lankan captain - he has led in 15 one-dayers
  • Pakistan have featured in each of the 16 games played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, winning nine of them
  • Sri Lanka have lost two of their three games here, with the win coming in the dead rubber of a three-match series
 Quotes
"As a captain I can't do anything to change the players' game. As a unit we have to take responsibility. As captain I am disappointed to lose, and we need to sit down and think where we can start again before the South Africa series."
Will Sri Lanka make the fresh start that Tillakaratne Dilshan desires in Abu Dhabi?
"When you have a good atmosphere around you, then you try your best to deliver. I was overjoyed by the support in Sharjah where they cheered my singles, so I was happy to put my head down initially."
An adoring crowd can make Shahid Afridi do anything, even bat sensibly.[Preview Source:Cricinfo.com]

Matches: Pakistan v Sri Lanka at Sharjah
Series/Tournaments: Sri Lanka tour of United Arab Emirates
Teams: Pakistan | Sri Lanka
Big Picture

The batting Powerplay played its role in adding to the excitement of the World Cup, often tripping up a batting side coasting towards a large score or jumpstarting a flagging chase. The rules have been tweaked since and though the Powerplay is now taken earlier, it continues to add an element of unpredictability to the game, and was pivotal to the results of the previous two one-dayers between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Sri Lanka were reasonably well placed in their chase on Friday when they opted for the Powerplay. Cue 19 runs in five overs, the wickets of both their set batsmen and an arduous challenge that proved too much for the tail. It was similarly poisonous for Pakistan in the second ODI - 26 runs, three wickets and a chase that was virtually over. In what is a must-win game for Sri Lanka - Pakistan lead the five-match series 2-1 - how both teams handle the batting Powerplay could be crucial.
Teams are yet to properly re-calibrate their approach during the later set of fielding restrictions. Previously they targeted about 50 runs in that five-over spell, while now they need to tone down their ambitions, given that a big chunk of the innings still remains after that Powerplay. Mahela Jayawardene has already predicted how the two new balls will lead to lower totals, suggesting that 250 could be the new par score.
A par score of 250 seems like a throwback to the 1990s, a feeling that is only emphasised by Sunday's game being played in Sharjah. This signals the return of top-tier one-day cricket to the venue that was the hotbed of ODIs during 90s. Sharjah Cricket Ground is the runaway leader in terms of number of one-days hosted, but it's been eight years since two major teams contested a 50-over match there.

Watch out for …

Imran Farhat's place has been under scrutiny for much of his international career but he has finally begun to put together a string of performances that could satisfy the critics. Three half-centuries in five ODI-innings is a start, but he still needs to improve his conversion-rate.
It's been an up-and-down year for Upul Tharanga. There was the high of scoring loads of runs during Sri Lanka's run to the World Cup final, followed by the low of a three-month drug ban. Tharanga may not attract the headlines as much as the current Sri Lanka captain and his two predecessors, but he has quietly accumulated 12 one-day centuries, the third-highest by a Sri Lanka batsman.
Team news

Most of Pakistan's XI picks itself. The only question is over which fast bowler will partner Umar Gul with the new balls. Aizaz Cheema got a look-in for the first two games before being replaced by Sohail Tanvir. After Tanvir's lacklustre effort on Friday, Junaid Khan could well be in line for a place.
Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Sohail Tanvir/Junaid Khan.
Dilhara Fernando didn't have the best of games on Friday. With Lasith Malinga and Thisara Perera also being right-arm quicks, Sri Lanka may be tempted to add variety to the attack through the change of angle Chanaka Welegedara provides.
Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Mahela Jayawardene, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Seekkuge Prasanna, 11 Dilhara Fernando/Chanaka Welegedara.
Stats and trivia

  • Of the major Test nations, only Sri Lanka don't have any batsman with an ODI average above 40.00. Kumar Sangakkara, with 37.77, has the highest one-day average for a Sri Lankan
  • Pakistan's biggest ODI victory over Sri Lanka, and second biggest overall, came in Sharjah, when they won by 217 runs in 2002
Quotes
"It wasn't easy early on in the previous match. The ball wasn't coming onto the bat, but spending more time in the middle just gave us a bit more confidence."
Mohammad Hafeez had a reputation for making attractive 30s before giving it away. Friday's patient 83 showed showed how much progress he has made
"We have to get used to it. I don't think 300 and 350 runs are [now needed for] winning. Now 250 runs can be [enough for] a winnable target, with two new balls."

Before Newlands, there had been apprehensions that the two match series between Test cricket’s most exciting teams was too short to grab eyeballs. But, the epic encounter at Cape Town dispelled that notion as cricket loving fans world over enjoyed the thrill of three innings breaks on a single day. After a madcap second day when 23 wickets fell, South Africa coasted home due to twin centuries from Hashim Amla and skipper Graeme Smith as Australia crashed to one of their worst defeats in recent history. So how do we rate the performances of the two sides, should South Africa receive all the praise despite being shot out for 96 in the first innings or Should Australia face all the condemnation despite stellar performances from their captain and vice captain.
The better way of putting it would be that Australia faltered at a crucial juncture in the match and the home seamers cashed in like predators at the most precise moment. The saying that each day has a new beginning should give Australia heart for they know they can approach the Johannesburg tie with renewed vigor after a five day break. Without a doubt they have the quality to mount a serious challenge for the Proteas, for that to happen Australia would need to keep the belief going.
The fact that Australia can still save face by restoring parity in the series with a win at Wanderers should be enough to lift the stunned side and with some champion players like Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey and Clarke among their ranks, the motivation of restoring some lost glory should power the team effort. That been said, some personnel changes are more than overdue. Mitchell Johnson has probably outlived his usefulness as they are in dire need of some inspirational stuff and young Patrick Cummins can do it for them. With Usman Khwaja likely to replace injured Shaun Marsh, Shane Watson should drop down the order so that he is able to deliver better results as a genuine all-rounder.

South Africa squad:Graeme Smith (c), AB de Villiers (vc), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher (wk), JP Duminy, Paul Harris, Imran Tahir, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander, Ashwell Prince, Jacques Rudolph, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Australia Squad: Michael Clarke (c), Shane Watson (vc), Michael Beer, Trent Copeland, Patrick Cummins, Brad Haddin (wk), Ryan Harris, Phil Hughes, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, David Warner, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle.

Mahela Jayawardene cuts through point, Pakistan v Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI, Dubai, November 14, 2011
Mahela Jayawardene is just 13 runs away from reaching 10,000 runs in ODIs
Mahela Jayawardene : Two-fifty is a good score under the new Powerplay rules
Matches: Pakistan v Sri Lanka at Dubai (DSC)
Teams: Pakistan | Sri Lanka

Big Picture
Sri Lanka's first victory on this tour of the UAE would come as a relief for them not merely for the fact that they broke a winless run. The win also marked a return to form for Mahela Jayawardene, whose struggles with the bat this tour have been a setback for a team that is heavily reliant on a core group of experienced batsmen that includes him.
Equally encouraging was the performance of their bowlers, who've collectively fallen short of matching a superior Pakistan attack but have been able to improve their chances with the return of Lasith Malinga for the limited-overs games. The series level 1-1, Sri Lanka have the confidence and the players in form they need to press ahead and put behind them the defeat in the Tests and the capitulation in the first ODI.
Pakistan will be disappointed they were bowled out in 46.3 overs in a chase they could have sealed, thanks to Umar Akmal's own return to form. He made 91 and was looking good in the company of the middle-order batsmen who chipped in with useful contributions, but didn't do enough to secure a win. Abdul Razzaq, Sarfraz Ahmed and Shahid Afridi were set, yet failed to see their team through. Pakistan are still favourites to take this series but Sri Lanka's renewed confidence could make that task significantly tougher.
Form guide
Pakistan: LWWWW
Sri Lanka: WLWLW
Watch out for…
He was once a batting allrounder but the role has reversed for Thisara Perera, who opens the bowling and bats at No.8. His onslaught against Zaheer Khan in the World Cup 2011 final is a reminder that he has much to offer with the bat. He's useful with the ball with his variations in pace. He was included in this series as a replacement for the injured Dhammika Prasad, and will want to seize this opportunity to keep his place. He hasn't started too badly, with an economical 2 for 30 in nine overs in Sri Lanka's win.
Abdul Razzaq has been around for a while, but he's still only 31 and a big all-round asset for Pakistan. In a strong bowling line-up, his role has been limited - his last 10-over spell came in November 2009 and as far as opportunities with the bat are concerned, even more so. Though no one would question his ability, a strong all-round performance remains due. With Shoaib Malik also in the squad, he does face competition.
Team news
Pakistan don't have any compelling reasons to make changes to their side but perhaps they could give Junaid Khan a go, following his impressive show in the Tests.
Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema/Junaid Khan.
Chanaka Welegedera has been drafted into the Sri Lankan squad in place of an injured Suranga Lakmal, who didn't play the previous game. However, it remains to be seen if Welegedara plays tomorrow.
Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Mahela Jayawardene, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Seekkuge Prasanna, 11 Dilhara Fernando.
Stats and trivia
  • Mahela Jayawardene is 13 runs short of 10,000 runs in ODIs and 46 runs short of reaching the same landmark in Tests. He'll become the ninth batsman to reach that landmark in ODIs.

Australia dropped the ball spectacularly in Cape Town. Can they pick it up in Johannesburg?

 South Africa v Australia

Big Picture

It is a truism of sport that every match contains the previous match. Not in its conditions, venue or the atmosphere, but in the minds of the combatants. This fact is inescapable for Australia, no matter how much the team claims to have moved on from events in Cape Town. Michael Clarke's team is about to take the field in the wake of Australia's most traumatic Test defeat, in terms of a dominant position surrendered, since Kolkata 2001. The psyche of this team is rather more fragile than that of Steve Waugh's men, recalling that of the Kim Hughes-led XI that stumbled to another infamous defeat at Headingley in 1981. In each case, the impact of the loss carried over into the next Test, and ultimately proved decisive in the loss of the series.
For South Africa, the extraordinary events of Cape Town provided a heartening reminder of the resilience among some of the team's senior players, but also a sharp reminder of how far behind the hosts can fall if not entirely ready for the task at hand. The outstanding debut of Vernon Philander was another reason for excitement, as he provided a seaming, swerving counterpoint to the speed of Dale Steyn and the bounce of Morne Morkel. Less imposing was Jacques Rudolph in his first Test match since 2006, and he will want to make a notable score in order to stave off the claims of Alviro Petersen, the man he replaced as Graeme Smith's opening partner. Collectively, the team will relish the chance to defeat Australia at home, but they have of course slipped from positions of strength before.
The locals have far fewer questions swirling around their team than Australia, who have only two or three players without some kind of question hanging over them after Newlands. Phillip Hughes continues to furnish a reputation as a nicker, Shane Watson is regressing with the bat as quickly as he improves with the ball, and Ricky Ponting is shuffling across his stumps and seemingly into the twilight of his Test career. Brad Haddin's batting and 'keeping are being called increasingly into question, and Mitchell Johnson is probably on his last chance. Then there is Usman Khawaja, coming in to bat at No. 3 in place of the injured Shaun Marsh - by a distance Australia's most reassuring presence at the crease in recent matches. As a captain without a full-time coach to support him, Clarke has so much, too much, to ponder.
 Form guide
(most recent first)
South Africa: WDLWD
Australia: LDDWL
 In the spotlight
In the context of the second afternoon at Newlands, AB de Villiers' first innings eight was a handsome score. But as a senior batsman and ace fielder making his return to the team after an enforced convalescence to rest a fractured digit, it was underwhelming. Capable of the sort of innings that can swiftly change the course of a match, de Villiers may get his chance to do this at the Wanderers, on a surface known to aid the new ball but also provide enormous value for shots via a fast outfield and none-too-distant boundaries. An afternoon of rampant de Villiers strokeplay would be one of the surest paths to a South African series victory.
As a bowler of vast talent but enigmatic method, Mitchell Johnson has always needed the support of his captain and the long-term faith of the national selectors. At present he is in severe danger of exhausting both, so much so that Clarke has admitted Johnson may not get another chance beyond the Wanderers to prove his worth to the team. If Johnson cannot swing the ball in Johannesburg, where he bent it so treacherously in the first match of the 2009 series on the way to match figures of 8-135, it is valid to ask whether or not he will do it anywhere under Test match pressure.
 Pitch and conditions
As with Cape Town, the early season timing of the match has created a little doubt about how the pitch will play, with some early inspections suggesting a softer surface than usual. It is expected to provide enough bounce allied to the swing often found in Johannesburg, and could be better for batting. A weather forecast of rain on most days suggests a handful of interruptions across the match.
 Team news
The South Africans had optional training. An unchanged team is probable for the hosts, though Paul Harris may consider himself a chance for a recall given that the legspinner Imran Tahir's brief appearance at the bowling crease on his Test debut was less than dangerous.
South Africa (probable): 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Jacques Rudolph, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 Ashwell Prince, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir.
Peter Siddle is the man most likely to make way if the Australians elect to choose a different quick, either the highly reliable Trent Copeland or more likely the speedy teenager Pat Cummins. A "stiff and sore" Ryan Harris was clouding matters, and the Australians were unlikely to decide on the make-up of their attack until the morning of the match. Usman Khawaja will bat in place of Shaun Marsh.
Australia (probable): 1 Shane Watson, 2 Phillip Hughes, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Pat Cummins, 11 Nathan Lyon
 Stats & trivia

  • A win or draw in Johannesburg would deliver South Africa's first home series victory over Australia since the nation's return to international cricket in 1992.
  • A baggy green cap for Pat Cummins at 18 would make him the youngest Test debutant for Australia since Ian Craig walked out to batagainst South Africa as a 17-year-old in 1953.
  • South Africa have only beaten Australia once at the Wanderers since cricket contact resumed, in 1994. Australia have won each of the four Tests they have played at the ground since.  Quotes
"Because it was very short, it did take a lot out of the players emotionally. We had two unexpected days off, which was a nice surprise. We were on the right side of that game but the guys are looking forward to the next one."
South Africa batsman Hashim Amla on the mental drain of Cape Town
"It's an important Test for us as a team for a little bit of redemption and to show our desire to play for Australia and what it means."
Australia's captain Michael Clarke says his side have much to atone for at the Wanderers
"We want to earn the right to win the series and we want to play well. There is a nice humbleness in the group, especially after such a successful win."
Graeme Smith says South Africa are not getting carried away...[Preview.Source- Cricinfo.com]

High-flying Pakistan plot another win

Match facts
Monday, November 14
Start time 1500 (1100 GMT)
With every passing match, the stock of Misbah-ul-Haq continues to rise. A dysfunctional board, the loss of world-class fast bowlers to the spot-fixing crisis, a fall-out between captain and coach earlier in the year leading to the brief retirement of the talismanic Shahid Afridi - none of that has stopped Misbah from steering Pakistan to an almost six-month unbeaten run. Some of the opposition along the way might have been the lightweights, but the thumping win in the first one-dayer came against one of the top limited-overs sides in the world. For a man whose international career seemed well and truly over a little more than a year ago, it's been quite a ride since taking over as captain.
Things haven't been as smooth for the man who became Sri Lanka's leader after the World Cup. There's been some scattered Twenty20 success, butTillakaratne Dilshan's side has lost all their major Test and ODI assignments over the past six months. After the abysmal batting collapse in the first one-dayer, Dilshan was critical of the shot-selection, especially from a hugely experienced top order. His own one-day form hasn't been great, and Sri Lankahave the added worry of Mahela Jayawardene struggling with a knee injury, which could put him out of Monday's match.
Form guide
Pakistan WWWWW
Sri Lanka LWLWL
Watch out for…
The solidity of Pakistan's openers in recent matches have reduced the opportunities for Umar Akmal, but a substantial performance from him will deter the team management from being tempted to replace him with Shoaib Malik. Umar was Man of the Match when Pakistan halted Australia's 34-match World Cup unbeaten streak, but he hasn't made a half-century against Test opposition in more than a year. The talent has never been in doubt, and he's still only 21, but the results need more consistency.
Another highly rated 21-year-old batsman looking to make an impression is Dinesh Chandimal. After the highs of a Lord's century, his form has nosedived - three low scores against Australia led to him losing his spot. He regained his place in the XI on Friday and top scored with 28 but his position in the order is a source of debate. Jayawardene usually prefers to bat as high as possible, but Chandimal's presence at No. 4 pushes Jayawardene down to three-down. "I want Chandimal to bat between Sanga and Mahela," Dilshan said. "Sanga comes in at three and Mahela at five, and if Chandimal can bat around the two of them it would be good."
Team news
After their comprehensive victory on Friday, Pakistan are unlikely to want to tinker with their combination.
Pakistan (probable) 1 Imran Farhat, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt.), 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema
Though it was the batting that was abject in their defeat in the previous game, Sri Lanka's top six is more or less set in stone, unless if Jayawardene fails to recover from his knee problem. In that case, Dimuth Karunaratne, the 23-year-old top-order batsman from SSC, will likely take his place. Changes are likely to come lower down in the order, with Thisara Perera and Jeevan Mendis as possible replacements for the new boys, Kosala Kulasekara andSeekkuge Prasanna. Perera could even be brought in at the expense of Dilhara Fernando, who was erratic on Friday though he touched express speeds of 145kph.
